I was looking on the atf site and cant find it. I have been invited to my buddys place in kansas city to shoot a small private match. I was looking at the airline regs and I will have to ship my ammo as I cannot take enough on the plane. I was thinking about just shipping my rifle and ammo together. I thougt it was legal to do so but cannot find anything about shipping on the atf website. Can anyone steer me to the answer.

Re: shiping a rifle to yourself?

You can't ship rifle and ammo together, must be in separate packages per UPS and USPS websites.

Re: shiping a rifle to yourself?

When I moved to Alaska I had 3 large Hard Cases loaded with Guns and Ammo, together,on the plane.Totally legal in the same Case,as long as the ammo container is factory,or a plastic MTM type box.I had over 600rds of 6X45mm w/ My AR,and 400rds 44 Mag in with my 629.TSA guy just looked in the cases and said it was obvious I knew the rules. Was more interested in my guns and how hard it was to build an AR,and buy a suppressor.

As far as shipping goes, can't ship a gun and ammo in the same box.Big No-Go !! FedEx seems to be the most ammo friendly shipper I've dealt with. When I buy Fac ammo,my supplier uses them, brings it right to my door,no haz-mat charge......good thing,as 200rds of 230gr 460 Rowland weighs a ton !!!!

Re: shiping a rifle to yourself?

UPS will not ship ammo out of most facilities unless you have a Haz-Mat Contract with them , mainly commercial . Fed-X is the easiest to ship through. Also no weapon and ammo shipment allowed together. Also INSURE it above and beyond value. Somehow weapon shipments have a problem occasionaly of coming up missing!

Might want to just take them on the plane with you,if it's a LOT of ammo,1500-2000rds, separate it into another hard case, might be cheaper and more peace of mind.

FYI,when you check in,the TSA will have you open the hard case/cases and then instruct you to lock it,and both of you check it into baggage.A hard case with firearms is the ONLY checked baggage that ONLY You have a key to,and the TSA isn't authorized to open it once it's been inspected and checked. No TSA locks on those.

Hope this helps.........

Re: shiping a rifle to yourself?

Last I checked a year ago, the ammo had to be separate and a max of 40rnds, in the original packaging.

I'm sure this either may have changed or specific to the airline I was flying on. I just bought ammo at the training event I was scheduled to attend.

I also took the bolt out of the weapon and placed it on my carry on. But just FYI, the sniffer will detect the oil/lube on the bolt, just so you know.

Re: shiping a rifle to yourself?

Ammo on planes: each airline has its own rules about how much ammo one can check on a plane. Many airlines limit that to 10lbs. Some airlines allow more, some less. Go to the airline's website and read their rules.

Re: shiping a rifle to yourself?

you can't ship ammo usps-period. i have shipped ammo thru ups-home pick up or service center,no problem. the contract "ups stores" won't touch ammo or any gun related stuff. i have had them refuse to ship mosin bolt parts. fed ex won't ship ammo unless you have a contract with them. opposite what was stated above. ups won't take a gun and ammo in the same box. same shipment is fine. i live in a small rural town and have had no issue shipping long guns via usps. i bet in a more communist area of the country, they might jerk you around. i THINK they have the right to look at package contents-not sure.
handguns are a separate issue and i have heard conflicting stories on those. don't know what to believe on them.
