Just wondering what distances you guys are shooting your long range .22lr rifles at?What setups you have?Looking for groups and bullet choices mostly. Thanks

Re: Long range .22

100-200yards
Wolf MT

Re: Long range .22

Out to 200 meters. I can hit a IHMSA full size ram about 4 out of 5 times, just resting my 10/22 against a post while shooting. I use the Pride-Fowler scope which subtends perfectly with Blazers. Using amplifying earmuffs will help you hear when you do hit the steel, cuz lord knows, it's not gonna knock over a 55lb silhouette! Lol

Re: Long range .22

50 yards is short, 100 yards in intermediate, and 200 yards is long. I haven't tried 300 yards even though I do have access to a 300 yard range. That's a long way for a 22.

Re: Long range .22

My findings, at least at -3000 density altituted, is that at long distances (I was shooting at 230 yards) a .22 isn't really effective as a training tool. I say this because when we were shooting clays at this distance, the target size was almost 2 moa (4"), but there was so much vertical dispersion (8" or more) that multiple rounds with the same hold were required until luck would bring one down in the right area. I think I learn more at 50-100 where the gun will still hold moa or under than when it opens up to 3-4 moa as luck becomes more important than skill at hitting small targets.

Re: Long range .22

Getting 1" vertical at 100Y is plenty acceptable to me.

I just got a Anschutz MPR a few weeks ago. I've only done a little testing with it with Wolf MT but the accuracy is a notch up compared to many 22's I've owned with half the groups I've shot at 50Y being in the .3" range and a few .2". It's the wind that has opened most of the other groups up making them wide. I got lucky and put 5 into a inch at 177Y last time out.

So far Eley 10x has been the most accurate ammo I've tried which isn't saying much because I haven't tried but a few boxes of other brands of expensive 22 match ammo. Wolf MT does pretty well but there's going to be half a dozen in a box of 50 that hit low at longer distances.

This is what I shoot. The bipod is not on it in the picture, but the sunshade is. The entire rifle weighs 9 lbs with the bipod.
Scope3-1.jpg

I use a CZ 455 American with a Hawke 8.5-25x42 1/2 mil-dot weighing 32oz with the rings. The rings are made by weaver and are fully adjustable for windage and elevation. This allowed me to adjust the scope all the way down and then zero for 50 yards. This gives me the whole 60 minutes of adjustment range and lets me get to 300 yards with room to spare. The scope adds significant weight to the rifle, but adds stability and reduces recoil to the point where you can see the impact at most ranges.

I shoot to 300 yards but mostly between 100-200.

I use a Harris 6-9" notch leg swivel bipod and I love it. I have a leather military sling and sometimes use it for extra support when standing or kneeling. (I do not shoot position shooting)

I have done some bolt and trigger work. The trigger breaks like a glass rod at 8 oz and the bolt floats on air. I installed pillars and can fit 13 bills under the barrel all the way to the action.

As for groups, some call me a liar. I don't care. The AVERAGE is around 3/4" at 100 yds and 1.5" at 200. I have done much better and much worse. This is one that I shot in front of the range officer at the Menomonie range.
100yardtarget.jpg

I have shot groups at 200 that were 1/2 inch, but most are around the inch-and-a-half mark. Wind is the biggest hurdle. I would rather shoot in a good steady wind, than in a light switching breeze.

I shoot CCI SV almost exclusively. I have had some REALLY GOOD lots and some that didn't shoot so good. I try to buy a few hundred rounds of a new lot and try them before buying more. This lets me pick the good stuff from the not-so-good stuff. The first lot I had shot like it had a guidance system. I went through 5,000 rounds of it over the summer and then could not find any more of it:( I was busting 1" pebbles at 200 yards with ease. I have not had a lot like that since. That was when most people were calling it BS. I have found some good lots since, but none have done so well as the first. I am wishing I had saved it, but what is the purpose of saving it only to shoot it later? I dunno...

I have started shooting CCI Velocitor. I have found them to be very accurate in the few boxes I have tried so far. Very fast and they hit like a hammer. Perfect expansion. I like them, but have to shoot them more before I decide to stock up.

Don't bother calling BS on me, as others have already done it. Doesn't bother me. Just work hard to shoot well and don't let anyone get you down. If you don't believe in yourself, you won't shoot well.

Re: Long range .22

I have a Savage Mk. II and a Ruger 10/22. The Savage has a Bushnell "Banner" 3-9x40mm and the Ruger a Nikon 4x32mm. I shoot the Ruger from 10-50 yards, and the Savage from 50-100 yards. I have never bothered shooting a .22LR beyond 100 yards.

Re: Long range .22

Used to play alot at 500 yards and a few times out to 600. Tried to shoot 1000 yards once. Could not get the bullets to go much further than 900-950 yards and they were NOT accurate at all at, Good luck hitting a car size target at those ranges..

500 I have had my good days and bad days, wind is a huge factor!

Most of you all have seen my .22lr videos, But if you have not check out my youtube channel

Re: Long range .22

take a look in the rimfire comp threads and learnings threads.

there's a ton of rifles, ammo, optics listed along with the results of what is being used.

Re: Long range .22

Using CCI Minimags and a bone stock out of the box Sig 522, I can print rather consistent 4" groups at 200 yards until it gets windy. Nothing too special, but it sure is fun and AFFORDABLE! I've never pushed it any further with the 22.

Re: Long range .22

I have shot out to 233 yards with decent success. Savage FV-SR was capable of 3-4" groups without the help of wind. Farthest kill I have with it was at 224 yards using Segmented Subsonic rounds. Dropped the little guy instantly.

IMO .22lr is a great training tool up to 225 yards max. In my little rifle it seemed to lose its accuracy after that. I have noticed at 150 yards you begin to see more affect from a 5mph crosswind. At 200 yards it begins to be a little more thrilling to make shots with crosswinds no more than 10mph. From my experience anything more than 10mph crosswinds and I cannot make accurate shots on clays at 200 yards. let alone 175.

Re: Long range .22

I had my 6yr old shooting clay targets at 100yds with a red dot scope on a HK416 22lr, he hit them all with fed 40gr HV. I could hit them at 200yds with ease.

Re: Long range .22

With my Marlin 60 stainless barrel 100 yds is pretty accurate, close to 2 MOA with bulk Winchester rounds. I've tried 200yds with mixed results which could be the wind at my range... its in a valley and can get weird gusts.

Re: Long range .22

So far,
Savage MKII FVSR, DIP 25moa base, generic bipod, leopuld med pwr rings, illuminated falcon menace 4-14x44ffp, kydex cheek riser

Shoots groups barely able to cover with a quater at 170 , shooting cheap remington golden bullet bulk 500pk . Zeroed @ 25/50yrds (same/same). Shot 4 groups of 5rnds all about the same had 2 fliers on group 3, (didnt count those). Shot early morning fog, no wind, benchrested w/ rear bag. Down here in s. Tx

waiting for other ammo to test. Ill try further when my ammo orders come in.

Carbon copy of mine, in 22LR it will not shoot as tight as some others does, but less than MOA all the way out to 150 meter and with a 17MC2 barrel 1/2 MOA to the same distance,

used to own a Annie that I regularly shot at 300 meters, however it was far to low probability of a hit on the golfballs that we shot at so I went centerfire instead. /Chris

Sorry I didn't finish answering your question.

I've shot out to 400Y on a 1 foot wide steel and had decent success but doing it is more of a novelty. Smallest shift in wind and you miss and then the vertical issues with 22 ammo are amplified to the extreme.

300Y is fun and not all that hard on the same piece of steel.

200Y is comparatively easy in the same conditions and I shoot at a 4" wide round steel or smaller.

The most fun I've had is setting up 2-3 moa sized steels from 100 to 250Y at random unknown distances. Range em with the RF, look at my dope, make a wind call and holdover/off.

The farthest kill with a 22lr was a 333Y prairie dog.
