I am still fairly new to reloading, and my gear is mostly hand me downs from my father in law. And the tumbler he had given me finally craped out. looking for a nice reliable tumbler without spending a whole lot. Any members have some advice on a preferred, reliable tumbler. Thanks for any advice and help.
Mike

Re: Tumblers

zuke i have looked into tumblers tumbler and have herd nothing but excellent things , but looking for some thing a little bit more economy$$ friendly for the time being.

Re: Tumblers

Its a THUMLERS Tumbler with stainless steel media hands down. While it may seem pricey now you will more than recover the cost in not being frustrated or repeated cleanings with marginal results from other cheaper methods.

Re: Tumblers

From purely an economical perspective, I recommend the tumbler Cabelas sells under their label. It's built by Berry's and has a great warranty. Truth be told though, when mine finally shits the bed, I'm going the Thumlers route.

Re: Tumblers

I would recommend against the Dillon stuff. I bought one of the giant sized 2400's and it lasted just over a year before the motor quit. Dillon no longer has the lifetime warranty and wants about as much as a new one costs to replace the motor. I've heard from friends who also have Dillon tumblers that they are pretty much crap motorwise. The bowls are great but if they don't run they're no good. . . The crappy frankford arsenal tumbler from midway lasted longer than the dillon.

I'll have a look at the Thumblers as well.

One thing to consider beyond the initial cost is the quality. If you have to buy 3 tumblers of a crappy grade to make it the same length of time that one good one does....which is better?
Buy once and you don't have to deal with shipping and having a piece of equipment go down when you need it.

Re: Tumblers

Biffj,

I have had excellent luck with Dillon tumblers. I have had 2 since about 1994 or so. I shot action pistol for about 10 years, and tumbled about 2000 rounds a month the whole time. My room mate and I shot about 1k a month each. Those two tumblers were running more than they weren't. I still have them and while I use them, just not so often, they still work great. I am looking at the SS media route.
I think the OP just wants a good reliable, lower price point tumbler, and I'd say look on Ebay, lots of tumblers there used. Good luck

Re: Tumblers

Looked for the Thumlers and they are nowhere to be found! Dammit! They seem to be tha shitz for brass though, just have to wait for them to come back into stock.

What he said, almost 200 dollars for a Dillon, and in a year the motor has shit twice, by the time I ship it back this time I'll have enough in it to have bought another Cabela's, of which I'd had five over the last ten years, having only paid for the first one.

I've taken them in the store in pieces and they just go get me a new one.

Dillon, told me that I shouldn't run mine more than a couple hours at a time, which is when I blew a fuse, this is supposed to be the top of the heap, and it's says tumble until 'desired results are achieved' in the book' so mine run about 24 hours.

My dillon is sitting locked up right now, and my Cabela's one crapped out last night too, so I now have nothing, I'll have a report on the one from 'tools by the pound' later.

Just my thoughts...

Re: Tumblers

Like zuke said in his earlier post, just buy tht thumlers model b and be done with it.

Re: Tumblers

I've used an allegedly piece of crap Frankford Arsenal tumbler for the last eight years. Works great, even forgot to turn it off for four days once. No signs of failure at all.

The Dillon polishers are beautifully built, except the motors are definitely hit or miss with a high replacement cost. Some run seemingly forever, others die quickly.

Stainless media by far gets the best results. However I will deal with a dirty primer pocket for the simplicity and low cost of walnut with Nu-Finish.

Re: Tumblers

I also have the franford arsenal that ive had 6 or 7 years. works great. also have the lyman 2500 with no complaints

Re: Tumblers

Berrys MFG Had mine for ten years without any problems and it will run 24/7 if need be.

Now if you want to wash your brass have fun. 10 lbs of water and 3 lbs of stainless media with all those fancy chemicals leaves you with about 2 lbs of brass and then you get to rinse it and watch it dry. Like watching paint dry. Plus it ruins your brass.

Put your brass in corn cob media turn it on go to bed and your brass is ready.

Do you dare let your brass sit wet with the stainless or you will have a real mess on your hands.

Re: Tumblers

Please help me if I have missed something.

The Lortone 12lb model is $465 and with 8lbs of water and 4lbs of stainless media that does not even leave any room for the Lemishine not to mention your brass.

Please don't tell me you actually weigh water before adding it.

Re: Tumblers

Think mine is a QT6, and while I don't have info in front of me I have/use 4# of SS media, all the 308 brass for about 2/3 full, Hot water & Dawn then LemiShine. No problems. The units are made for hard use. If in doubt contact Lortone but mine gets a workout about every 2 weeks with NO issues. 8# of H2O would be a gallon & that doesn't fit in my unit.

Stainlesstumblingmedia.com shows that they have them in stock.

Re: Tumblers

Well thank you all for the help and the advice. I am just gonna shell out a little more and go with the tumblers tumbler B. It seems to be the consensuses.

Amazon has them. Search my model number. Really good price too. Amazon Prime FTW

Re: Tumblers

I definitely second the Model B and SS media. Don't forget the Lemishine, it's the ticket to shiny brass!

I usually put a 9mm case full of Lemishine per batch. Also, I've noticed that cases will slightly tarnish over time (6 months+)after running them through the SS media. If you're an aesthetics guy like me, toss the cases in a batch of clean corn cob with a bit of polish for 10-20 minutes and you're gtg.

There is a big section saying they are out on the main page and if you click on the kits it says backordered.

They are not the high speed model, I looked there before I went with a dillon.
