Rifle Scopes Vortex Viper HS LR FFP scopes with XLR reticle

Re: Vortex Viper HS LR FFP scopes with XLR reticle

Mine came in today!!!!! If my mount was here I'd be shooting with this thing today.

Anyone know what BC caps fit this scope?

Also has anyone confirmed the throw lever mentioned earlier?

#43 on front

I got #16 on the rear and it was a bit loose. Nothing a little electrical tape couldn't fix though.

Re: Vortex Viper HS LR FFP scopes with XLR reticle

How do you all feel about the 1/2 moa elevation? That is my only concern with this scope... Thoughts... likes. dislikes.

Depends on your use of the scope. I took it out to my 600 yard range today to confirm my zero from first use on Friday. At 600, seeing a 1/2 adjustment vs a 1/4 adjustment did seem like a lot at first but honestly wasn't that bad. If you were only using this scope for paper target punching I might advise against it, but I got it as an all around scope so it fits my needs. Also once you get a good zero you can also correct it enough with holdover/under. I really did like dialing 14MOA in 3/4 of a turn to reach 600 yards.. very nice.

TL:DR - for only punching Xs, a 1/4 scope may be better. Otherwise it's fine.

Re: Vortex Viper HS LR FFP scopes with XLR reticle

Has anyone compared the glass. How does it compare to say Nikon Monarch, Leupold VX3, or bushnell HDMR.

Re: Vortex Viper HS LR FFP scopes with XLR reticle

Anybody got any first hand experience with the 4-16 model? Thinking the 6-24 would be huge on a 20" ar?

Re: Vortex Viper HS LR FFP scopes with XLR reticle

I've had the switch view lever for a week I just haven't had time to put it on until tonight. It fits good! It is the SVMDMS model and the best price going right now is here:

Hell's Canyon Armory

There is a notch cut out for the Millet DMS power ring tab, FYI.

Scope caps are 43 Obj and 16 Eye. My 16 Eye is snug not loose.

As for glass quality it is on par with PST glass. I'd wager it is exactly the same quality of glass that goes in the 6-24x PST as the two scopes are so similar.

As for the 6-24x being "huge" for an AR; the 4-16x and 6-24x HS have the same external dimensions. Both HS models are 13.7" length compared to 15.5" length for the 6-24x PST and 13.7" for the 4-16X PST.

Re: Vortex Viper HS LR FFP scopes with XLR reticle

Really? Vortex website says 15.5" for the 6-24. But also looking for a comparison between the 6-24 and the 4-16.

I stand corrected. The Vortex website list the 6-24X length as 15.5" but has the 4-16x graphic up which list 13.7"

I only quickly looked at the graphic last night, not the chart. personally I don't think the 6-24x is too big for an AR (with 18"-24" barrel), but YMMV.

Re: Vortex Viper HS LR FFP scopes with XLR reticle

Yea its going on a fullsize 20", im definitely still considering the 6-24 especially if it proves to have consistently better optics than the 4-16. Would really like to see a good comparison between the two to help me decide.

I'll be at Frank's Fun match on Sunday at The Range in Oxford. Let me know and I will throw the rifle in the truck.

In all honesty I personally would not bother with the 4-16x. I rarely shoot mine at 24x and I'm usually around 14x-16x BUT there have been far more times where I have wanted/needed to crank up the magnification greater than 16x and been thankful that I had that option than the number of times I wished I could go below 6x. The price difference is what less than $50 between the 6-24x and 4-16x? YMMV

Re: Vortex Viper HS LR FFP scopes with XLR reticle

I've really liked this reticle since I first saw it on their website. Would love to see a mil version.

Re: Vortex Viper HS LR FFP scopes with XLR reticle

Bunsen, thanks for the gesture I live like 5 minutes from franks so I may take you up on that, ill let you know.

Re: Vortex Viper HS LR FFP scopes with XLR reticle

After inquiring on Monday (Dec. 24th), the sales rep at Vortex informed me that the next batch of these scopes is scheduled to ship early/mid February... *sigh* oh how time moves so slowly

Re: Vortex Viper HS LR FFP scopes with XLR reticle

I would need a mil/mil solution, but love everything else about this scope.

Re: Vortex Viper HS LR FFP scopes with XLR reticle

looking to put this on my 6.5 creed build anyone have any more experience with it and how they like the reticle?

Re: Vortex Viper HS LR FFP scopes with XLR reticle

They should offer that style of reticle in the PST line.

E-mail Vortex and let them know this. The more people they hear it from the more likely it will happen.

<<< already sent a couple emails on this subject

Re: Vortex Viper HS LR FFP scopes with XLR reticle

So I finally got a chance to shoot this other than at the 100yd indoor range, and it rocks! Spent the afternoon mostly shooting my 22's, but I did send a few rounds downrange from the big boomstick. Overall extremely pleased with the glass quality and the reticule. I really like the micro dot for VERY precise aiming. I did however have a brain fart and forgot that the elevation is 1/2MOA not 1/4MOA. My 8 clicks = 2MOA was actually 4MOA and at 300yds was a 12" not the 6" correction I was looking for. Ran the range from 300-600yds and REALLY liked the smaller reticule thickness at distances past 500yds.

I'm very tempted to sell my 6-24x PST and get another one of these. However I'd really like to have the XLR reticule with 1/2MOA and illumination, just to see what it's like. I hope Vortex does offer an XLR reticule swap into the PST sooner rather than later.

Re: Vortex Viper HS LR FFP scopes with XLR reticle

that sounds promising and making the wait for the scope to get here seem even longer

+1. A mil/mil version would have me saying this:

How do you like the numbers being so close to the main vertical line? I like the concept of this reticle but it seems that the numbers are in the exact spot where a lot of a lot of hold offs would be.

Re: Vortex Viper HS LR FFP scopes with XLR reticle

Upon checking email after work today I received a tracking number from Vortex that mine should arrive this coming Tuesday.

Looking forward to testing/playing with it.
