Well I had a moment of weakness today and picked up a used Savage 10 in 243. It does have the accutrigger but the el cheapo plastic stock and sporter barrel. I know nothing about building a bolt gun have mainly dealt with ar's. So that being said my experience is limited but I was wanting to maybe turn this into a 260 or 6.5 creedmoor could you give me options on the path to take or how you would build it. I gave 350 for the gun with a simmons scope on it. I really don't want to have over 1000 to 1200 in the rifle when all said and done excluding the glass. I reload so being limited to factory ammo is not an issue I would reload for this also. Thanks.

Re: New Savage build

Call Jim Briggs @ Northland Shooter Supply and order a Criterion barrel in the caliber of your choice and a NSS recoil lug ($350); you might also pick up a set of barrel blocks and a barrel nut wrench from him. Then go to Red Hawk Rifles and order a Bell & Carlson A2 Medalist stock ($250).

Weaver 20MOA base from Amazon and a set of Go/No-Go gauges and the optic of your choice and you're ready to shoot.

Re: New Savage build

I agree on the Criterion barrel! The barrel wrench, go gauges are a must the barrel blocks will be extremely helpful if you don't want to make your own.

If you are looking for a lower priced stock check out Stockade gun stocks. They have several different options. I have a choate tactical on my savage and I like it really well! Hope this helps!

Re: New Savage build

I know this gun does not have a detachable mag but is that only limited by the stock? (forgive my noob ness) If I go to a 260 or 6.5 creedmoor do I have to change the bolt also or will it work with this bolt.

Re: New Savage build

You are correct about the stock; however, you could have the current stock inletted for bottom metal. Most stocks could be inletted for that matter. CDI precision makes great dbm and he can also inlet for your current stock. Or you could spend a bit more money and get a chassis which already has the dbm (detachable bottom metal) built into the stock.

And I believe the bolt face for the .243 is also the same for the .260 and 6.5 rounds.

Re: New Savage build

Good choice, I know some get tired of the Savages being bragged up but with a few quality components like the barrel mentioned and scope they'll run with the big guns. I have HS-Precision on both of my Savages and a buddy has Choates on his and both have been good stocks.

You'll be amazed how easy they are to change calibers and with the bolt face changes more options are available.

Good luck with your new build.

Re: New Savage build

Another vote for the criterion barrels, I should get my .260 barrel this friday. I will try and posts some pics after I take it out the first time.

Re: New Savage build

260, 243 or 223 all will work. With a brake recoil is nearly none so wife should have no problem shooting it. There are a few other calibers with fancy names that mirror these calibers but these are simple and easy to get brass for and a good place to start. Get your feet wet then you can venture out seeking upgrades to equipment or calibers.

Re: New Savage build

A vote for PacNor here; the three groove 6.5 barrels clean up like a dream...

.260/6.5CM/6.5x47L...take your pick...

Re: New Savage build

Forgot to mention like catrono said, Jim is great to deal with, very friendly guy who will take the time to talk to you about whatever questions you have.

Re: New Savage build

a vote for shillen select stainless match 26" 1:8 twist 260 barrel and recoil lug from Jim.

get a factory 3 screw trigger and have it tuned and adjusted

choate ultimate tactical is a decent stock, that's what i'm running right now but about to update to a chassis

another vote for cdi bottom metal and alpha mags

also a 20moa rail is a huge advantage that would be a great setup and you can do the build without the bottom metal and install that later. i have run my gun in tons of matches and it runs great even before my bottom metal was installed.
