Guys,
Looking to upgrade my optics from the Viper 6.5-20x50 to a Viper PST 4-16x50. Just wondering if anyone has this scope on the Savage TR and if there were any issues with mounting distance, etc.

I have a EGW 20MOA rail on the rifle if that makes a difference.

Also, any thoughts on the above noted upgrade? Will the quality of glass of the PST make up for loosing 4x power on the top end? The rifle is only used for shooting targets out to 200-250 yards.

I kinda need to make my decision tonight so any help would be great.

Thanks in advance

Re: Savage TR with Viper PST 4-16x50

I sometimes use my PST4-16x50 FFP on my Savage FVSR, of course i needed a 25MOA base. But i do just as good with a falcon menace 4-14x44 so i dedicated that one to the 22. (cheaper, mushier dials [they get a little better if you wipe out excess grease in the turrets]). I will say i get better FFP mil reads with my PST.
Simple answer: if you really want to blow the extra money go for the PST. I do just fine with the cheaper Falcon.

Re: Savage TR with Viper PST 4-16x50

I have both of those scopes and I don't bother putting the PST on my TR because like MGD said the falcon menace does a fine job.

Re: Savage TR with Viper PST 4-16x50

Thanks guys, no offence to anyone with the Falcon but I've had three and neither were of any quality as far as I could tell. The dials were mushy, they did not track that well, and the glass was so so. I will never buy another although the options you get for the money is hard to resist.

That being said I know lots of people have good luck with them so perhaps I had a few of the bad ones.

Re: Savage TR with Viper PST 4-16x50

I have a savage Mk II and I went from a Vortex Viper 6.5-20x50 Mildot to a 6-24x50 Viper PST FFP in MRAD. Difference was night and day. so much clearer, targets (and Rabbits) to 200m. Haven't shot it longer than that.

If I was to do it again though, I would go the 4-16. simply don't need the 24 magnification on the top end.

Re: Savage TR with Viper PST 4-16x50

Thanks Gorax that's what I was wondering. I'm trying to determine if the 4-16x50 PST would be good enough for shooting paper out to max of 200-250 or so. I don't use a spotting scope so I'd like to be able to see the bullet holes if at all possible.

My concern was going from a 20x top end on the regular Viper to a 16x on the PST.

So you think the 16x PST would do the trick?

Re: Savage TR with Viper PST 4-16x50

I very rarely use mine past 16x anyway, maybe 20x tops, I've never taken the scope past that on my .22.
