rcbs neck turning tool

Re: rcbs neck turning tool

The key to remember is: Do not neck turn unless you use a neck bushing style die. If you use a standard die the neck ID will be too small for the pilot. The whole reason for neck turning is to get consistant tension with a bushing die. Do you have the hand turner or the unit that goes on the rotary case trimmer?

Re: rcbs neck turning tool

You should do a little research on neck turning. Accurate Shooter and Varmint Al both have very good info on their sites. The main difference between the best neck turning tools and the cheapest in in the ease of adjustment. Most will hold the adjustment, once set. Practice on a few junk cases until you get the adjustment right. Why are you turning necks? Are you just cleaning up the neck or turning for a tight neck chamber? Do you plan to use bushing dies? If you cut too much, you over work your brass in a factory chamber. Lightman

+1 on the K&M or Sinclair. I use a Sinclair 4000 with carbide mandrels and produces very consistent neck thicknesses. Best to turn new unfired brass in the initial case prep which will require an expander mandrel in order for the turning mandrel to properly fit inside the neck for a consistent cut. You will need to trim your brass prior to trimming so the cut into the shoulder just beyond the neck is uniform for all cases. Once trimmed, you can either use a FL sizing die or neck die. Dies that utilize a bushing, either FL or neck, are best since you can obtain the desired neck tension. I turn all of my brass for my bolt or SS riflesin the initial prep. It takes a bit of time but is well worth it. A power adaptor increases the speed considerably while also giving a cleaner cut. Be sure to clean neck turner after each cut and keep the mandrel lubricated by either applying directly to the mandrel or the inside of the case neck.

im looking at turning necks only in my 300wm. ive got forester comp dies for the brass, and I run either new winchester brass or once fired federal brass since i have an ample supply of both. im hoping to clean up the necks and get a more consistant neck tension out of the brass.ive read alot about neck turning but reading and doing are 2 diffrent things, so i was hoping to get some tips from the guys that do it.

I use the RCBS one on my 308...its functional but I stopped hand cranking them, I use a small cordless screwdriver and a shell holder. Its actually not a bad little tool
