My new barrel finally came in from NSS today. Also replaced the bolt body with a PTG bolt body. Hope to hit the range Saturday and see how she shoots. Still trying to decide if I should paint the barrel or leave it as is, just wanted it together so I could go out and shoot.

Re: Savage got a makeover

How does that PTG bolt work out? Does it tighten up yhe bolt slop much?

Re: Savage got a makeover

That's why I got it, only played with it a little but it does seem to help. For the price on Midway I think it's well worth the money.

Re: Savage got a makeover

Would you paint it black to match the rest? Personally I like the stainless look for a bench gun! Nice rifle!

Which supressor are you running?

Does the PTG bolt body lighten the bolt lift at all? I'm thinking PTG may have done a better job on the camming surfaces than Savage.

Great looking rifle, by the way! Love the stainless barrel with the XLR! Maybe not super "tactical", but it looks sexy.

Re: Savage got a makeover

I cut 2-3 coils off tge firing pin spring and that made the bolt lift much nicer. I suppose the lock time was increasedbut I ddidn't see any difference at the range.

Re: Savage got a makeover

Thats a whole new gun. Very nice job. What parts of this unit is still savage??

Re: Savage got a makeover

I helped a friend put together nearly the exact same set up. CBI in 260, xlr, pst, SSS trigger. No can though. You will be delighted with how it shoots. My CBI's hammer as does my friends.

Yor rifle doesn't suck.

VERY nice.

I appreciate the pic, as I am starting a very similar build.

Re: Savage got a makeover

The action and trigger are still Savage. Thought about a new trigger but I'm just gonna stick with the accutrigger for now.

Re: Savage got a makeover

I'm wondering how the 30 can will work with a .26 bullet, as I'll have a similar situ, with an Ops 12th and a 6.5 bullett.

Re: Savage got a makeover

Most everyone I've seen running a can on a .264 or 7mm is using a 30xal can.

Re: Savage got a makeover

Did the PTG bolt require any fitting like they say in the description on Midway or was is a drop in?

Re: Savage got a makeover

Very nice!

What height rings did you use and how much clearance do you have between scope/chassis?

Thanks.

no.. i sent mine to SSS for the action job.. that made it better..
i also nitrided my bolt body..

Re: Savage got a makeover

The bolt body did just drop in but I have heard of them requiring work too.

The base is a 20MOA NF base and I believe they are medium height NF rings. Very little clearance, can't put a scope cap on the front.

Re: Savage got a makeover

Thanks for the ring info!

I've been tempted to do this, but the reports of poor CS from SSS are kind of off-putting. Maybe I'll send in my action next winter.

Re: Savage got a makeover

Went to the range today and have been pretty happy with the performance. Going to make a couple small adjustments tomorrow and see if they help any. Here is 5 shots at 100 and 200 yards respectively. Not sure if the 1 high shot at 100 is a coldbore or bad trigger. . .

What grip you running on those McRees?

Re: Savage got a makeover

Thats an Ergo overmolded grip, same as what comes on an XLR. They are nice and girthy

Looks to be more vertical, and comfy-er in the prone shooting position.

Re: Savage got a makeover

It's a lot more grippy than a hard plastic AR grip. I can't put my thumb on the other side and get a proper trigger finger though, it's fat.

Re: Savage got a makeover

Absolutely gorgeous!! I just ordered the same barrel from Jim yesterady and Kyle got my order for a Tactical chassis yesterday as well.

Glad you posted the pic of the PTG bolt nitrided. There is one sitting on my desk and trying to find out who locally can Nitride mine as well.

Going with almost the same scope, but going with a 6-24 PST.

edit: where in TX?

Re: Savage got a makeover

I am trying to find someone with a FFP 6-24 to trade. I'm in the corpus christi area.

Re: Savage got a makeover

I just picked up a VERY lightly used 6-24 PST FFP MIL/MIL for $750. Now I just have to wait for the remainder of the parts to come in. Kyle is still quoting 8 week lead times.

More longer range shooting options down your way. Not too many ranges will allow me to really stretch the 260 up here.
