What about a remington 7400?

My dad was trading guns and he ended up with a brand new remington 7400 in .270 for next to nothing. I'm wondering if the gun is any good? Is it dependable and is it accurate at longer ranges? Or should it just be sent down the road too?

Re: What about a remington 7400?

My dad has one in 30-06, it failes to edject. About 3 or 4 years ago I took it to an armorer at our gun range, his words "get rid of it". Also, he refused to work on it, he told me he could fix the extractor it but it would fail again. My brother -in-law found a smith to work on it. After about 1 month and $150 dollars my dad had it back. Less than a box of shells later, it failed again. The lip on the extractor breaks easily, at least that's how it was explained to me. Our armorer told me with modern ammo and it being a long action it produces to much force and the parts jut can't withstand it. After it failed again, I got him a bolt action. Now his 7400, that he's had as long as I can remember just sits in the closet.

The problem with them is that it is hard to get the chamber clean and that is where you will start to get malfunctions. I don't think I would want to go to war with one but they are decent hunting rifles.

Re: What about a remington 7400?

I have one that I haven't put a lot of rounds through, a 30-06. So far it has never failed to eject...but like I said, not a lot of use.

My dad has a 742 in .308 that he has had since high school (he is 60 now) and it has been very reliable. My understanding is this is basically the same gun.

I doubt it is an overly accurate gun but I'm sure it's fine for deer hunting in wooded areas.

Re: What about a remington 7400?

Shoot, I got all kinds of toys now, but that was my first deer rifle in 1981.
It shoots just fine and ill bet mine has 750 rounds through it. Not as dandy as an LMT or FN, but it seemed to be a good deer rifle.

Shoot it and see how it groups. Mine is sub MOA.

Kills deer and hogs like a champ and carries well.

It's not a sniper rifle though if that's what you want. Mine was .30-06 and kicks pretty good.

Re: What about a remington 7400?

My gunsmith loves for it to rain during the 1st week of deer gun season. Reason is all the hunters with 742/7400s get them wet and the dirty chambers rust and pit. Eventually the extractor startd failing. He strips the gun down and has a cleaning rod section mounted in a drill with steel wool wrapped around a chamber brush. He applys cleaning liguids and oil and does a scrub job on the chamber. Cleans every thing up and oils it good. Tells them to keep the chamber cleaned and oiled especially when they put it away. I've stopped by to chat and watched him do one after another.

Does this same problem apply to the 7600 pump as well as the 7400 semi-auto?

Re: What about a remington 7400?

I had one in 308. Acceptably accurate for NYS hunting. Very reliable with factory loads or full length resized reloads. I think actualy hard to get dirty/wet in chamber because of enclosed action. Like the detachable mags. Didnt like the load clack when closing the actin by latch. I'd have no problem having this rifle for my only hunting rifle at typical deer/bear/hog ranges

Re: What about a remington 7400?

p020346: it proboably applies since they are very similar. Just never see the pump model in our neck of the woods. Keep in mind the folks I am referring to are hunters, not gun guns that also hunt. They are in the woods for the 1st week/10 days of deer season, reqardless of the weather. No cleaning gear, maybe an old dirty towel in the truck/jeep to wipe off the heavy stuff. A little common sense and cleaning and it will last a lifetime as a deer rifle.

Re: What about a remington 7400?

My cousin had one in 30-06, and even though we were just using factory ammo we couldnt get it to group better than 3 inches at 100 yards. The trigger was horrible too, probably 1/8" of creep and grit. He never had any reliabilty problems with it though.
