Like to spend about a thousand, iron sights, glass later on. I'm 60, a plumber, and about to retire. Any shooting over 300 yds and I'll need a taxi. Just asking the pros, Thank you in advance for your consideration.

Re: 308 carbine reccomendation.

I would say back in the more "sane" times a DPMS LR-308 carbine of your liking could be had for about $1200 and would probably fit what you mentioned above. Unfortunately, everything has gone crazy lately and that same gun is probably worth $2000+. Good luck with your search and I am sure there are several other members here with some good recommendations.

Re: 308 carbine reccomendation.

I just picked up a scar 17 s and it is amazing. By far the best 308 carbine I've ever fired and I've shot everything from Ar 10s cetmes m1as to fals and this gun put the biggest smile on my face. Recoil is like a 223 ergonomics are top notch and accuracy is under moa at 3000 bucks it isn't cheep but deffinately worth every penny.

Re: 308 carbine reccomendation.

+1

I've seen them go for $950
Free-floated barrel on all models.
I've also seen many of them shoot sub moa, even with that ridiculous M4 cut-out for an M-203 to attach.

Why get a large bore ar15 like the .50 beowulf etc..... when you could have a 308 carbine that: weighs the same, kicks less, hits harder, and goes much, much further..............all with beter accuracy.
Irons help keep it light and simple.
They don't fog
The AR-15 iron sights are durable, repeatable, reliable, and very easy to use, especially when quick elevation adjustments must be made.

I'd go with the detachable carry handle sight that has been chopped from rock river.
If you can, get a match rifle sight tower so you can get the full sight radius.
Frank white from compass lake could help you for less money than you might imagine.

If you wait, you'll likely be able to pick one up again for around $1050 +.
You can build an excellent 308 carbine yourself, for around $1500.
IMO the DPMS has always been an excellent value.

Re: 308 carbine reccomendation.

My best recommendation is to save your money and let the craziness blow over. Lots of people who think they "need" new rifles are blowing up the market right now. If you absolutely HAVE TO HAVE ONE, prepare to blow your budget out of the water.

Also, consider that a .223 will be significantly less expensive to shoot, and produce substantially less recoil. That said, my DPMS LR308 shoots lights out.

Re: 308 carbine reccomendation.

Thanks folks. I'm out of the 223 game. I want some bang. And the market is beserk right now.

Re: 308 carbine reccomendation.

SCAR 17s are going for $4-5k now and .308 ARs are close behind... M1As are $3k... Even FALs are $2-3k.

I wish I had an easy answer for $1k for you....

Are you dead-set on a semi-auto? Im sure you could easily get a .308 bolt gun for under $1k.

Good advice here.

Re: 308 carbine reccomendation.

Either an assault weapon ban will pass or it will not. If it does in its current form then all of those high priced "investments" will be required to be registered and will no longer be able to be legally sold. So much for investments. If it does not pass then all of those high priced "investments" will be worth a fraction of what their owners paid for them. So much for investments. It's a "flipper's" market right now and that didn't work out so well for those "holding the bag" when the housing market crashed...

Re: 308 carbine reccomendation.

I KNOW IT IS MORE THEN YOU WANTED TO SPEND ,BUT IT IS WORTH EVERY PENNY . When we get back to normal priceing ( if we ever do ) I suggest you check out the Sig 716 P . Mine has been flawless and very accurate. Not ammo sensitive at all ,feeds everything without a hicup. All it needed was a G saa-e trigger to make it near perfect for me ,the factory trigger was too heavy and not to my likeing . Great 308 carbine. If they ever get under $2000.00 again , it's a lot of gun for the money IMHO.

Re: 308 carbine reccomendation.

I did a DPMS LR308AP4. At the time, I wanted their 4 rail full float handguard and the collapsable stock. I ended up putting on a JP handguard and a Magpul UBR. I think, at the time, it was very close to a grand. Yeah, doesn't seem like they are available right now at that price. I do enjoy it.

Re: 308 carbine reccomendation.

I ended up buying a Rem 700 bolt action, bull barrel, 4+1. Thanks for all the input. Prices and availability are insane. Need a scope, what do you think?

.
Considering NJ not a bad choice, big fan of the 700 here. What sort of budget are you thinking for glass? Also might want to move the question to the optic section

I'd put a Vortex Viper PST FFP either the 4-16X50 or the 6-24X50 depending on the magnification that suits you needs best,

Re: 308 carbine reccomendation.

I second the PST. I don't think there's a better bang for your buck out there right now. However, it's still not cheap. If you don't want to spend that much, Cabelas actually has some impressive quality for the money. I'm probably going to get a PST 6-24 for my .308 soon, but if you don't feel like you "need" an adjustable turret scope with fancy "tactical" BDC reticle, lighted reticle, etc, you can get some really nice glass from Leupold or similar makers for quite a bit less.

I'm sure there are plenty of people buying these as financial investments, but there are also a lot of people (like me) who are buying them as security investments. If laws are passed requiring guns to be registered, I'd be willing to bet that MOST owners of assault weapons [sic] will not be registering them. I know I never would. And I'd shoot anyone who tried to force me to. Still don't want to pay inflated prices, but at some point, those prices are going to be real (as in, when the guns are no longer legally available for sale). I don't think there's much point in owning a gun like that unless you are willing to use it (in the right circumstances). Fortunately, I live in an area where I think the general population agrees with me. (28 of 29 sheriffs in my state signed a letter to the President that they will "give their lives" to defend citizen's rights to keep and bear arms. This includes arresting federal officers who try to enforce unconstitutional laws in our state. Sorry, rant over...

I too am considering a .308 bolt gun (mostly because my AR-10 is kind of heavy for mountain hunting). Hope you like yours!

Re: 308 carbine reccomendation.

I, too, went 700 due to financial reasons.

HOWEVER, to whomever is reading this and wants to know the best thing available TODAY, under $2,000...since I'm spending your money anyhow...get thee hence to http://www.gandrtactical.com/cgi-bin/commerce.cgi?preadd=action&key=311308

In case your linky don't work, it's a S&W M&P 308.

Wish my long overdue ship came in...

The ones I have seen are no where near the accuracy of the SIG 716 or the LMT MSW. Not bad for a battle rifle but not a precision rifle.

You are absoultely right, not near the accuracy. I was focusing on his desired price(around $1000)-I saw one on SlickGuns that was really reasonable considering the climate and available.

We had a S&W with a full Ambi lower come through the shop a couple weeks ago, really reasonable on price. I wish I could remember the name of the model, I have to say it was pretty sweet. The Scar is amazing but really pricey.

Yes, 716 here and would also recommend it, great gun. It would be a miracle though to find anything semi for a grand.
