Going to be sending out my son's rem 700 .223 to be built up for his B-day and wanting to get some input on the build.
Plans are
smith- GAP
barrel-18in MTU 8 twist
trigger-factory tuned
stock-mcree with folding stock
optics-still undecided
finish-Bead blast and Desert Tan Cerakote
bolt knob-Badger Ordnance
Bolt-Factory with the bolt face opened up or just get a PTG one piece?
Scope Base and Rings-Still undecided

Side bolt release worth getting?

will be used for a hunting rifle,as well as shooting prone and from a bench. Also I do reload and I already have a 260
Any and all positive input is appreciated

Re: Rifle build for my son

No advice, but are you in the market for another son?

Re: Rifle build for my son

Not really, been trying to get this build started for almost a year and know i have the funds on the way

Re: Rifle build for my son

i don't need any reason to do a new build but i would feel less guilty if i had a son for an excuse. make the wife feel better about where the funds are going also.

Re: Rifle build for my son

No real input, sounds like a awesome build and I'm sure your son will cherish it.
Any reason for sticking with a 18" instead of just going for 16"?

Re: Rifle build for my son

what cal are you going with on this? You asked if you should have the boltface opened or go with a new bolt body.

Re: Rifle build for my son

going to be a 260 and as for the barrel length it's so he can handle/carry it without loosing the performance of the round

Also thinking of putting a break on it

Re: Rifle build for my son

Sounds like a nice rifle. Wish my dad would have built me a GAP rifle! Your boy will love it.

Re: Rifle build for my son

I know for me, stuff like this is very personal, when I'm asked about gift ideas, I say cash, when they insist on an item, they quickly find out how much my shit costs, and give cash.

Does your son have specific tastes?

Do you know he likes the mcree? For me, it'd be up for sale immediately.

Does he want to go 260? For me, I just came from there, not interested in going back, at least for a while.

It isn't that there is anything wrong with any of the parts, it is simply a very personal thing for me, I like my stock to feel and fit just so... My trigger to be single stage and set at x lbs... And so on.

So while the gift is incredibly thoughtful, and you getting the boy into the game is appreciated, I'd be making sure it's what he wants by talking to him.

Re: Rifle build for my son

Sounds good, only thing I would add is maybe consider Accurate Ord as well. Was going to go GAP but followed a recommendation.
.
Also who's barrel are you going to use? Might want to look into getting that sooner than later as they can take a while. Same with the stock.

Re: Rifle build for my son

to answer the above questions

he like the stock, its what his 223 is in now.
as for his taste he is going to be 9
As for the caliber,I have a 260 so I'm already set up for reloading

Re: Rifle build for my son

Is this going to be used as a walking varminter? If so, might consider a different contour than MTU. MAybe varmint contour or light Palma. I have an MTU on my .308 and it's a truck axle.

And since He is 9 go ahead and have it fluted to the max for wt purposes.

This^. If that's a hunting rig, I think you're dead on with the 260REM. However, MTU is far too heavy unless he will only use this gun from a tree stand. Light palma would be the heaviest I'd go in a hunting rig. I honestly put #3 Bartleins on my hunting rigs (one of which is a 22" 260) and they're fantastic.

I'd go with a more standard, lightweight stock from Manners. They're making so many good hunting stocks these days that you've got a ton to choose from. I prefer the T2 myself because it's got a tactical feel but hunter lines. It's not too heavy either.

What kind of hunting you doing? Taking him out west?

Re: Rifle build for my son

Will most likely be hunting here in Florida for the most part, but first he has alot to learn about shooting and gun safty before he gets to carry his rifle threw the woods. So until he is ready he will have alot of range time,he like to shoot prone more so than off the bench

Re: Rifle build for my son

I too think the MTU is too heavy for what that gun is gonna be for. The .260 bore diameter is small wnough that you don't need all that metal surronding the bore. I would go with a sendero contour at the heaviest. I would just have the bolt face opened since your gonna have GAP build it that shouldn't be a problem.

Re: Rifle build for my son

Is the Side bolt release worth getting, and how well do the older triggers work mid 70's?
