I was running out of time to shoot my trophy buck but I finally got him a few hours ago! My friend and I pulled up to the stand at 3:40pm and we were driving down the fenceline on our way to park the truck. All of a sudden my friend says, "There was a buck right there in the brush!". I backed up until I could see it, looked at it through the binoculars, and replied "That's my trophy buck!". We went ahead and parked the truck and we were walking to the stand and the buck was standing in the feed pen watching us, waiting for the feeder to go off. When we got in the stand he jumped out of the feed pen and walked off into the brush but I knew he'd come back once the feeder went off. The feeder went off at 4:00 and sure enough at 4:10 he was walking towards us down the fenceline. I took a few pictures of him through the binoculars and sent them to my dad to get the OK from him to shoot. After about 10 minutes he texted back "KILL HIM!". I got my .25-06 out the window and drilled him in the shoulder as he was quartering towards me. He was dead before he hit the ground. He's not the biggest scoring buck but honestly the score doesn't mean anything to me anymore. For me it's all about the experience and if it looks good to me, then IMO it's a trophy. This was the first buck I've ever shot that wasn't an 8 point, but I can't complain because I've shot some monster 8 points. This was also the first time I've killed a buck without my dad with me. I'm growing up! Lol

Gross score was 145 4/8

Re: Got my trophy buck!

So bitchin to have photos " on the hoof" before taking animals.
Awesome, nice Buck!

Re: Got my trophy buck!

You must be seeing some huge bucks to even question shooting him. Damn nice buck.

Re: Got my trophy buck!

Nice buck! Great job! I'd love to have something like that hanging on my wall and filling out my freezer.

I believe you mean 145 1/2.

Re: Got my trophy buck!

Thanks guys, I'm definitely proud of him!

The biggest deer that's been shot this year scored 172 and I think the second biggest was 164. On a normal ranch I wouldn't have questioned it at all but our lease is managed by the state and the trophy/management buck criteria is VERY strict. To shoot him, he had to be at least 5 1/2 years old and I was doubtful so I decided to see what my dad thought. He ended up being 5 1/2.

Haha I didn't even notice that. It was a long day yesterday...

Re: Got my trophy buck!

Great buck! 4/8 would be correct, Boone and Crocket scores in eighths.

Yes but wouldn't you still simplify the even fractions?

Re: Got my trophy buck!

Great job!! Congrats and cudos on your management practices!!

Re: Got my trophy buck!

nice buck..
great mass

same here, MLD property, 5.5 or older is the criteria

I can't believe you are seeing big boys in a feeder pin..

They have all gone nocturnal on our place.
Hope to get out on Thursday after the rains come through.
Then off to SHOT

Congrats again!

Re: Got my trophy buck!

Congrats man! That is a stud, and in my daddy's eye you should get 20 xtra point for doing it with his most loved caliber the 25-06!

Haha my dad is the same way! I couldn't imagine him owning any other caliber. IMO in North America all you need is a Remington 700 chambered in .25-06 and some Remington Core-Lokt 120 gr soft points and you're set. Lightweight, light recoil, little noise, flat shooting, and packs a hell of a punch! What more could you ask for?

There have actually been 4 trophy bucks taken in the past two weeks on our place. I had no idea when we were going to be back so if I would've passed on this guy, I might not have had another chance. We still have to kill 30 does and 10 management bucks by the end of February so we've got our work cut out for us lol.

Re: Got my trophy buck!

Congratulations man. I didn't get my trophy this year and have to find new land to hunt after it being sold a few days ago.

Re: Got my trophy buck!

Very nice deer. I miss hunting whitetails.
