A few hours of quality film time led to a couple double's and a single, in temps well below freezing...
our main concern was keeping my partners new NX5U from freezing up, and with the small amount of wind, we never saw the blue screen of death on the display
    wink.gif

    so we continued to kill...

    SET ONE:
we get a couple dogs to respond to the jackrabbit in distress, and within minutes they were on us,

although the female trailer got away, we did manage to pound her larger lover.

    SET TWO:
my partner and I made our "hide" behind a cluster of soap weeds, and got the camera level, the set began.
    keithjamesshooting_zps8330e557.jpg

using my set of Reese Outdoors, pro series calls, and lanyard, we decided to move in with a little more speed, and drop using the e caller for this set... seconds passed after the first series and this mangy coyote popped out from behind a bowl,

    repositioning...,

and switching the sequence of calls with the Reese and we had another dog show himself.

this one didn't end pretty, with the LongRifles Inc. COYOTE RIFLE, putting one in his throat...

showing a little love for LongRifles, Inc.

    SET 3:
by far the coldest set of the day, pick-up said -10 on the temp gauge, and the sun just set, we discussed our game plan.
    gameplan2_zps0cf9be2d.jpg

10 minutes and this pretty girl showed up.
    doubleatnight_zps5bfecd3d.jpg

always wanting to get more, and better footage we let her close the distance.
    beforthe2ndkill_zps46c872c5.jpg

with the temps rapidly falling, and our fingers beyond feeling, I engaged the jewel.
    shooting2nddouble_zps433c8a83.jpg

without knowing it, another coyote ran from under us, stopping @ a mere 350yds... (another reason I run a 56mm Obj, it definitely pays off in lowlight conditions like this). the Dixon built rifle dropped him where he stood.
    longshot2ndkill_zps7a6229c8.jpg

By the time we recovered these two,
    doubledarkinterview_zps80547c66.jpg

the camera was on its last leg, and for good reason... If your not familiar with the 08 FX4 gauge cluster, this reads -19

    as always fellas ENJOY.
    and GET YOUR CAN ON!!!

Excited for the latest DVD.. Hurry up and let us all buy it, haha.

Always enjoy the pics. Keep killing em'.

Re: What??? killing dogs in -19 degree temps... PICS!

    Great shoot and pictures!

I commonly see people post pictures of shooting coyotes in plains. I only have open access to wooded lands. Would you set a call up in regions such as these with good expectations?

Not only do we have open plains but we do have lots of farmground, hardwood creek bottoms, and rough ponderosa pine filled canyons... when the Carnivore crew came out this fall we killed a triple and a quad in thick wooded area's... basically if you know there's dogs around, you know their location (somewhat) and can play the wind, I don't see why not... your guess is as good as mine regarding how they are going to respond, some may circle and you'll never see em, while others may draw a straight line to your call.

That sure is some good news! I've been really excited recently about getting some interest with my friends to get out there and try.

Thanks for the encouragement and good luck with your future hunts!

I love killing coyotes, but in -19....thats way to hardcore for this southern boy. Great pictures, good job, and good luck.

Re: What??? killing dogs in -19 degree temps... PICS!

At -19 when you are out like skinney is and have to piss yer dick don't like -19 either. Don't know about skinney's plumbin but I have to stick a finger up my ass and holler snake and when it shows itself grab it and do my business. Kinda like gettin a turtle to stick his head out of his shell you know! You can actually 'walk away' from the "Golden Arch" after yer done. Just a thin yeller popcicle standing where you were.

    LMAO!!!

Skinney you are nucking futs!! I love hunting in the cold and the snow but I have to draw the line somewhere around zero and that means even if it is zero with the wind chill.

my gauge didn't quite get to that -19 mark yesterday, although it was below zero... which also means, hungry dogs, and MORE FOOTAGE!!!

Damn skinney, keep it up and the yote will be in the same category as the Black Footed Ferret in southern SD!!!!!

Was +3 just after dinner but -13 WC. Went for a 50 or so mile drive out of boredom. One yote seen and when he seen me come over the knob at about 200yds he never stopped haulin ass until about 1K and then just for a look back. No such thing as a stupid yote around here anymore!

Nice shooting. How much did the cold effect your dope? Never hunted yote's in weather that cold. Looks fun.

there's no doubt -19 has effects on the powder, especially when I don't put rounds in my pocket, they're always in the mag ready to rock, the eberlestock keeps it a little sheltered, but when you skin that stick and you start the set, things get back to sub zero real fast... with the new camera, I'm liking to get as close of footage as possible, and most shots this year have been under 300, with a 12" diameter window on a dogs vitals, the dope @ that distance is not enough to worry about... a little hold over, and western SD windage and your good 2 go.

Re: What??? killing dogs in -19 degree temps... PICS!

awesome thread i just started hunting yotes in NE SD this last fall and am struggling to beat hell

Re: What??? killing dogs in -19 degree temps... PICS!

you girls get your panties on and get over here before the snow melts! got areas that I left alone just for filming so they should be primed up! talked to neighbor today and he said he counted 6 playing in his hay yard this morning! Cant Wait!

Re: What??? killing dogs in -19 degree temps... PICS!

In my experience -20 is just about the comfortable lower limit for stationary shooting.

Looks like a lot of fun

Re: What??? killing dogs in -19 degree temps... PICS!

So given those temps, do you keep a round in the chamber or wait until coyote is in view to load?

Nice work as always Skinney...but some of us can't wait until spring to see those overwhites come off!

I'm sure you would know, by judging on your location, you hunt/shoot in conditions like this a lot more than us... we only get a week or two MAX out of the year that are that cold, BUT I would still love to live/hunt in AK.

almost always... many guys might not like to hear it, but 95% of the time my bolt is in battery with a chambered round when I leave the truck... with a bolt gun you can get by @ your set if you need to "sneak" a hot one up the tube... with an AR you better damn well be loaded when leaving the truck, cause I don't want to hear that bolt snap when we're setting up.
