OK I've been a hunter since I could shoot,but never hunted a wild hog before.So I'm asking for tips, because a good friend of mine just told me about 75 plus wild hogs.Was able to go see the damage they have caused his dad on the farm,let me say that they are glade they have insurance.The winter wheat is getting hit pretty hard.

So fare my friend has just been able to see and shoot from time to time.Me I want to put a plan together,so the most pigs can be killed.I know of putting corn out like for deer,but want more ideas to better the numbers of dead hogs.Any kind of great real world ideas are welcome,for I know that most of you guys have them.So what have yeah can you help out a friend.

Best method out is trapping. If you're having crop issues, build a pen and trap all you can. The traps hunt 24 hrs and you can't.

I've got a lot of suppressed gear, unless you've got green hogs that have never been shot at...they scatter when they hear the bullet hit the bone.

Thanks for the ideas,I think trapping will end up being the best.Just need to see what he has to offer for building a trap.

The son has killed two one weighing in at 200# and the other a piggy. He all so said that the 200# hog even had a good bit of fat on it.So I am guessing they have been on the farm for along time,being able to build up the fat,and not burning it off traveling around.

Yeah I'll post pics when we kill a few,just hope we kill more than a few.I've been wanting to try a wild pig on the grill for some time now.Might even get one cut up for the frez.

You can mix some diesel with your corn and it'll keep the deer and coons outta your bait.

Get you a good night light for some long range observation and dark thirty sniping. Lightforce stryker 170mm is wicked for long range night work.

Anything with nuts over 60lbs needs to be left for the coyotes/crow hunting bait. Everything else is good to go for cooking.

Remember this ain't commercial pork, the fat is stored differently and the meat isn't so thick. You've got to cook it at a lower temperature than normal or you can seriously dry it out. Get you a good dry rub seasoning and let it set overnight on the meat then cook.

If you are cleaning lots of hogs at one time, get ready to start strip skinning. If you are going to cape out hogs like you would a deer, you'll be give out quite quickly. Two must have tools, 1.) The Butt Out tool - best tool ever invented
2.) box cutter with some "carpet cutting" blades

Hang the hog by the head with a chain, then cut ears off flush.

Take the carpet cutter bladed box cutter and ring the neck just below the chain.

Then cut down from the neck cut to the bottom of the pig about two inches apart. Take pare of pliers to start the pull down and peel like a friggin banana.

You can peel a hog in about 7-8 minutes.....handy when you got ten to clean.

As far as the process of cleanging and cooking. I just use a sawzall with a demolition blade in....just start at the tail and work your way up the spine....easy to do (obviously after you've dropped the gut bag!)

Just add lips and teeth to suit!

Man you got it to an art don't ya.Thanks I'll sure put your ( art ) to good us.Getting ready for a spot and shine now.Got to load up the 4 wheelers and get the 300wm out.I too just made a copy of the land from google earth with ranges marked on it,so now I just need to really put myself in hog mood.

Oh yeah, get a foodsaver with either 11" or 15" rolls and a bottle of your favorite helper for storing the leftovers.

I had about 30 pigs all around me on Thursday (twice) but was after deer so I didn't shoot any..

Well when I got their we did a short ride around with nothing in the fields.I too wanted to give him his time with his kids since he's not with them much.So no pig for me,but I haven't given up.

Soon after I just took a shower he calls me,saying do you want a pig.( 10:30pm or so ) I said hold on I'm on the way.Got their and found a 150+ pig on the ground.He and his two sons had just went for a ride around the grounds and shot that one.He went on to say that he counted about 20 more that weighed around 150-200 lbs,in a 40 or more herd.So now with him nowing to where they came from and to where they were going we have a plan for them.

Our plan is to bate them for a few days then put three of us on them for a hunt.We will be put into stand locations ( safely placed ) and wait for a good hunt to happen.Bad thing about it is if we end up with alot of meat,just hope we can deal with alot of meat.So I hope our plan is something to offer alot of meat and downed hogs,for the farm looks like its been plowed again.

I give thanks to all who replied to my post,I too ask that you keep posting for your ideas are helping me alot.I have come to say that the hogs/pigs are the reason for his bad deer hunting.I too hunt deer on his place and found that this year was a bust and now I know why.First it was yots now hogs and yots.

My pig hunting rules:

1. Bring a semi-auto rifle with the biggest capacity magazine you can find (unless you have access to a full auto crew served weapon.

2. Find the biggest sow in bunch and make her dead with your first shot.

3. Do not stop pulling the trigger until that mag runs dry shooting at the rest of them.

If I am lucky I mortally wound them, but leave then just enough alive that they run off into the woods to die so I don't have to drag them out of the field.

I hate pigs. 2012 count for myself and my two sons was 57 confirmed. Betting that we actually killed over 200. I know we hit way more than that.

I've got them all over my place, saw about a dozen at one time. I have made a trap out of a 10x10 dog kennel. They have been in the trap eating corn, but it looked like just one or two. As soon as they start using the trap on a regular basis, I will set the trigger.
A ham on the smoker sure sounds tempting.
I never saw a pig skinned in strips before. Looks like a good way to do it.

Edit: After I posted the above, I went to the trap and added some bait and set the trigger. Had Dr. apps this morning so didn't check the trap til this PM. Sure enough, at least one had got trapped, and managed to separate the wire at a corner, and bent back the chain link. Gone, leaving a hole about as big as a basketball. At least I know the trap works!

I like and love your rules Sneaky Gun Runner,but I have nothing in an auto other than a 22lr.I am a hard up bolt man.To this is why I too plan on hunting them from a stand about 300 yards away.

I think our plan will work for us,for we plan to half moon them in a trap,this would allow us to get them from more than one side.Kind of like a trap on a little track of land for a man drive for deer.We may not get them all at first,but we'll do this more than one time, with a week or so to let them gather their thoughts.

Yes,the meat will be enjoyed for sure.We have talked to see what we need to dress or boil the hair off with.We think we'll boil the little ones for BBQ and process the bigger ones,just haven't come to a yes thats what will happen.Its both our first at this,so it will be not only a blast but a learning process for us.

Keep them ideas coming,we need all we can stand.Thanks for what you have already offered us.

Trapping is good. If you have the means or friends with the right gear, going after them with night vision until you' ve killed a bunch works good too. They will get tired of being pressured like that and you can really get on them good at night. Once you have killed a bunch you will eventually push them off of your property for a while.

Trapping and pressure. Hunt them any chance you get. Shoot at, wound, kill and trap... Repeat

OP, there is also no shame in running them over with a pickup. Carry a baseball bat or axe/tomahawk for dispatching the cripples.

If there is a road running through the property that runs perpendicular to the prevailing winds put out corn on the road..
The scent will be carried by the wind and pull the pigs out of the woods..

You don't need to put a lot out or go to a bunch of work with making it smell more. Corn alone works great..

I use a road feeder on the front of our hunting truck and put out about 50 lbs over a 1/2 mile section the other day and had pigs and deer all over it..

This time of year is great as they will hit it harder than in the fall if there are a lot of dropped acorns on the ground.

10/four guys we will do just that.I plan to keep them awake as long as I can.

I am now looking into a kennel for a trap,so I might be able to work while in the bed myself.

Gonna try Deepbreeze' skinning technique next time. This one dulled 3 knives with 1" thick grisel plate, so bring a knife sharpener. Even the Boars taste good deep pitted.

Ok guys been looking around for a salt cure for the hams.Well there is to many to choose from and not as simple as I would like them to be.

So now I ask for a simple I say simple salt cure for the hams,thats when we get some.As of now none on the ground,but well be hunting tomorrow.Plus well be boiling them little ones.

I love eating the wild pork, but hate cleaning them. Those are some nasty little boogers. Last weekend we had an old duffer out to the ranch with us, and he shared his technique. For those of you not familiar, a pear burner is used to burn the spines off cactus so that cows can eat em. Looks like a giant blow torch fueled by a propane tank. Hang pig, flame pig with pear burner, use knife or a broom to scrape the ashes off, and you are left with a clean, naked pig to dress. Burns off all the hair, ticks, fleas, mud, and crap in less than 3 minutes. Genius! Thanks to old Bob Gavlin for this.

Well the son and I will be going for a hunt tonight.So I'll find out to how fast I can run a bolt on my 308.I just hope that i am not too slow.But we'll give them hell thaats for sure.

yeah a little hair fine but all of it I'm not to sure about that.


well we went out and saw three deer and two pigs.The fog was to thick for a facing shot,so I didn't pull the trigger.We'll be out again tonight.Last time was a day at school,we learned a lot.I do know now to where they sleep,so we'll just hang out their and see what happens.

Actually, thats what I thought as well, but it really doesnt. It sort of smells, well...deliciously like roasting pork. The burning hair is background, and really not bad. If you hate cleaning those nasty little fuckers, the pear burner will change your mind, I promise.

We might just have to get one then.Trying couldn't hurt for sure.

The hunt went south,it rained all night here.BUT its been dry all day.So I'll be out in about 2 hours from now.Just hope the hogs are out and willing to die.I need meat in the frez something bad.Deer season was a bust for me,shot one little buck at 110#,and the meat is almost gone.

Hogs, if in an over hunted area, are extremely suspicious(Yeah, No shit, I know). To cover this get yourself a set of portable speakers, and something to play sounds of wild songbirds singing. Try to waterproof that as best as you can. This has worked for me as songbirds don't give a shit how much racket they make in the woods.

Add a good cover scent. Hogs use their ears, and nose more than anything else.

The last sentence(up above) you should remember above all.

Well the hunt was a bust,the rain and creek flooded the back 40.( where the hogs are )They either moved across the creek before the flood or they tucked in from the rain and cold.I have been able to get the other guys number to see if we can hunt his place too.His land is across the creek from the back 40.So we'll just play off the two sides and see what happens.When the back 40 dries out we'll put corn out,right now its to wet and we'll sink to our butts.As of now I'll just wait till it dries out some.

Tired of the busted hunting,but I want give up.

When it rains, hogs will typically move to higher ground, usually until the water levels subside.

Call it a day or two after a heavy rain.

It is a good time to hunt them, in that it causes them to avoid streams, creeks, and rivers. Unless they really have to, they will not cross a stream or river. This makes the amount of escape routes smaller, to non-existent, for them.

Plan ahead using a map, document all the routes that you've seen hogs using, and when you do find them, aim for the sows first.

10/4 I'll do just that.We have had a flood warning since Friday.The worst part about it,is the son push the land to hold water for duck hunting.So it might be flooded for some time,not sure will talk to him soon.

You have to bait, bait, bait. Put a few large feeders out and make sure they don't run out of food. They will hang around a food source but when you let the feeders go dry they will move on. Be prepared to hunt them at night, they are actually smart animals and any hunting pressure on them during the day will having them feed at night. Check out the kill lights from Elusive Wildlife. They throw out a hell of a lot of light and the red light isn't bad about spooking them.

I have been hunting this herd that has a bunch of babies, and I got a couple with my Eoteched AR, but was disappointed with how much meat a front shoulder shot destroyed. Last weekend I switched to my suppressed 22, and got 3 little pigs, 35pounders, headshots, all from the same litter. Disappointed with how 22s performed on little pig heads. They all needed 3 to the head to quit kicking. Do Not shoot big ones with 22. Need a 300 blk upper when they become available again. Burnt em and peeled em, wound up with about 25 lbs of meat total. Gonna be delicious!

Men I have just found out from the son today something bad.He said last night he and his cuz counted about 100 head last night.And to add the game warden came up and said that he was hunting illegally with a light at night.( new law for SC ) So we gonna hunt anyway,but we'll get some kind of nuscence perment to be legal. you just gotta love an A hole for calling the popo

Yes,the water has left for now,so the hunt is back on.Went out today and found new ground to hunt.I all so found their real bedding spot,and its not the pine bed I thought.Its the adjacent land owner's pine forest.

I agree bait bait bait is the key,so we'll try the keep them fed.Just don't want to go broke doing it.

Take a 5 gal bucket and fill it with about 3/4 full with feeder corn. Fill the bucket with 1/2 gallon diesel and the rest water. Place the lid on it and leve it sit for a day or two.

Take the bucket out to an area in which you want hogs to show up and dump it out.

Like Southbreeze stated the diesel will keep other animals from hitting the corn but hogs seem to be attracted to it.

Sit back and wait for the hogs to show up then deploy the tactics listed by Sneaky Gun Runner.

Have you noticed that this new ULS Diesel does not work as good? We have had deer and coons eating the diesel/corn brew, and before they never would.

We figure it is the lack of sulfur.

I have literally walked right by a hog, if it wasn't for the dog, wouldn't know he was there.


Sows 1st, shoats later.

My biggest was 422 lbs. With a knife.

5R, wher you located at in SC? I'm in the upstate but hunt in the low country some, mainly in Orangeburg County. We had a few issues with hogs on our hunting property this year, really worried for next season.

Haven't noticed that but we used red dye diesel so I don't know if that makes a difference or not. You can try increasing the amount of diesel in the mix. I know guys that use a 50/50 mix of diesel/water.

I was using off-road diesel, and also, no water, just fill the bucket with corn, and fill it with diesel. It just used to work better. Not so good anymore.

Ok I have told him about the corn mix and hes working on it.We plan to hunt Friday night and hope we get a few.

Yes,I have someone in mind with a dog or two.So we might just him to bring them over one day.

The new law says the we will need to call DNR and offer each persons name that will be hunting at any given time.If one or more was shooting a rifle they must be 10 feet above ground.The law even says that it must be the last day of Feb. through July 1st,and that we should give a 48 hour lead way.It sucks but its the law.

Ok last night was a great night for pig hunting,my son and his friend went with me.We drove almost all the way around before we saw a pig.Got the back side ( owners home back yard ) and we had 40 or so in the field.They jumped out and went to shooting,my boy had two good hits but we couldn't find them.So we gave a little time and made another ride around the place with no pig.

Today around 10:30am I went back to see if I could see one down in the fields.Well I just did make it to the field and saw 4 little ones having their way.So I jumped out and made a first shot 300 yard kill ( longest shot/kill to date ) tried 3 more but little baby pigs are hard to kill on the run.BUT I did get another one with my EMP 9MM,they just ran right to me.( LITTLE DUMMIES )

So we are hard at it with little to say,but we'll keep at it the best we can.We are going to plan a BIG hunt soon.His dad is letting friends from his work in on the fun,so we plan to get all of use together for a really good hunt.More guns more dead we hope.Just need to keep safety first.To bad I don't own an AR right now.I too plan to hunt more in the day,just hope it all works out.

Wait a second, you are experiencing crop degradation on your own land and you don't have the right to kill 'em?

This ain't hunting season, this is protecting your land & crops. It amazes me that the State of SC is this restrictive in allowing a landowner to hunt at night with a light? WTF?

Yes,the game warden was real smart at my friend when he told him about the new law.He even went on to say that he would push the fact of taking his home and truck from him.But my friend told him to wipe his ASS with his new law.Plus he's a NEW warden and being young,well lets say he just trying to be one to hard.He doesn't know that I know his boss either.

As of now we are OK,but need to call in soon for the perment to be nice.I too agree, it's a sad new law.The world we live in has passed away and I am afraid it will never return.So fare out of 400 open acres they have ruined 4 or so arces.The worst of it is they have wheat planted,so 4 arces of wheat is gone.And they are not letting up for sure.The 4 little ones today all had their snouts working away.

Just heard they took one more tonight.If we keep this up we'll be needing a freezer or two to keep the meat.

OK was able to go last night,and I put a nice Sow down.We guess she weighed in at 300 +/- pounds.The full moon was a big help,but think a light would have been better.I will go one to say that if we did use a light that we might not have got a shot.They have learned that when a light hits them to start running.We first pulled up to the field and was able to see them at my left.So I tried to use the head lights and found they hed started going back to hide.We then cut the lights out and turned the truck off.I say about 10 min later we had found them again.Was able to walk up closer to them ( about 100 yards )then we all got in a safe spot and went to shooting.My first shot was a lucky head shot to the sows head.Our other shots did nothing,( this is when I wish we had a spotter )BUT I have to say that the BIG SOW will never ever haave another piggy again.

The night even got better,another guy had put out a trap for them.Well we could hear one making a lot of fuss.So we went over to check and found 9 30 pounder's in it.So thats a total of 16 down,with many more to come.

Mmmm, those little 30 pounders are unbelievably delicious. Just burn em, skin em, and take the hams, shoulders, and backstraps. Gutting not necessary. Only takes about 15 min apiece. You only wind up with 3-5 lbs of meat from each one, but it is the best pork you will ever put in your mouth.

As i am the hunter of fish but after reading you feel develop the interest in deer hunting...its cool and i am sure you always enjoy when you will hunt the deer .
