I recently puchased a B&C Tactical Medalist for a Savage build in .308. I'm looking at the stock as a blank canvas as I search the web and get modification ideas.

I'd like to see how folks have modified their stocks to suit their individual needs. Things like: shortened l.o.p., raised cheek pieces, accessory rails, changing stock profiles, adding grip texture, etc.

Pics or links to how-tos would be great.

Re: Stock modification ideas wanted

Started off with a off the shelf Rem SA ADL and made it work.

Inletted for DBM
Pillar bedded receiver
Flush-mount bipod attachment/rail
DIY barrel channel widening
lengthened LOP
added Grovtec flush cups
DIY oil/paint finish.

Still need to add adj. cheeek piece though.

Re: Stock modification ideas wanted

Thanks, just the stuff I was looking for. I don't have a mill and lathe, just some wood working tools. Thus, my DIY gunsmithing will be a bit more limited.

Re: Stock modification ideas wanted

Ranger Im looking for the same info. I have a 12LRP Savage in 6.5 creedmoor. It comes in a HS stock that works great as far as accuracy of the rifle but needs a vertical grip and butt hook. I am planning on doing these modifications myself. I know some are going to say "just buy a McMillan or B&C" etc etc etc but I am not made of money and the rifle is so accurate in this stock. I have a hard time believing no one has built up areas of a stock or modified one in anyway. If you come up with any info I would love to hear it... If I get to mine I will take a lot of pics and post them for you.

Re: Stock modification ideas wanted

Same here. I have an HS precision tactical/target stock that i plan to add a tubb or choate adjustable buttpiece to, a palm hook and flatter lower section for the rear so a bag is more useful, and an adjustable cheek. I have ideas on how to do it and have access to a lathe and mill, but I'm wondering if anyone sells diy hardware for an adjustable cheek? Might be easier than doing it myself...

Re: Stock modification ideas wanted

A fairly crude example.
A good customer from Germany who had purchased a Remmy stock from us liked the pistolgrip shape so much that he wanted me to change the composite stock that he had on his Mauser as we don't do Mauser.
He posted the stock to us in Ireland. The pistol grip on his stock was much shorter than on our stocks. We moulded a section of carbon in our remmy mould and positioned the section so that it would be roughly the same angle as on our stocks. Super glue held it in position until we could fill with light weight epoxy filler and glass over it.
Later we added a little Kaiser "lip" like on his remmy stock. He also wanted the same stippling as on his remmy stock.

You could build your own. Here's a couple of examples.

Both of these started out as birch plywood.

Re: Stock modification ideas wanted

The molding off the stock is a great idea and is what I am probably going to do. The birch plywood ones look cool though. I don't know that any wooden stock would last in my care. It seems that most of my shooting seems to be in mud and snow these days...lol Great work...bet they took you a bit of time.

Re: Stock modification ideas wanted

They end up getting about 15 coats of paint total when I am done with them. I have used the one on my .308 in snow and rain during deer season and haven't had any problem with them yet. If they did fall apart I could make another pretty easy and for about $10.00

Re: Stock modification ideas wanted

I took my stock and sprayed stone finish spray paint in the grip areas.

After a couple of coats of regular paint over top it gives a nice textured surface without being too over the top.

And here are a couple close ups after its gotten painted (probably 4 or five times now, with 3 colors each time)

There is also a cheek rest that you can barely see, which is home made. Piece of 1/8" Kydex molded over and secured with 2 lag bolts and lug nuts.

Re: Stock modification ideas wanted

Wow! I hadn't visited this post in awhile as it had gone stagnant, but seems like it has new life now.

Things have been slow with my Savage project. Between work, finishing my bonus room (above the garage), and doing some light relaoding for a friend, it seems like I've neglected the Savage.

Last weekend I installed an aftermarket recoil lug and headspaced the barrel. So, in theory, I'm ready to bed the action to the stock. Apparently, with the aluminum bedding block, bedding isn't absolutely necessary. After installing the barreled action in the stock a few times, I'm not totally happy with the fit. The barrel doesn't always line up even in the barrel channel.

After that, not too sure where I want to go. I'd like to remove the forend "wings" some. I saw a guy on Youtube that did his and I think it looks much better. Essentially he took a belt sander to it and made the sides flat. I'd like to add texture to the grip areas, maybe create a hook, make an adjustable cheek piece, and possibly further contour the forend some. I was really digging this guy's stock and thought I could mold a B&C some . . .
