DTA SRS in Precision Rifle competitions

I'm interested in trying my hand at precision tactical rifle matches. I've been contemplating a custom rifle in 6.5 Creedmoor as that seems to be a good starting caliber for competition with both available reasonable factory ammo and reloading components. However, I've recently discovered the Desert Tactical SRS platform and had a chance to handle it (but not shoot it) at SHOT. The appeal is a shorter, single platform/scope combination with caliber conversion capability.

So, my question... how does the DTA SRS platform fare when used in the precision rifle type competitions compared to more traditional rifle platforms? Is the bullpup design a liability?

I searched around the forum and have read quite a bit about the SRS, but not seen this topic addressed. If I've somehow missed an appropriate thread, please redirect me.

Thanks,
Jeff

Re: DTA SRS in Precision Rifle competitions

Jeff,
Its all going to come down to familiarity, pratice, and the individual shooter. If you are well praticed with a weapon system and have become very efficient with it then it dosnt matter what the platform is. I have very little time behind the DTA, but what little time I have spent with it I can say that I could become profecient with it. If the rifle fits you and you feel comfortable with it, then go for it. The DTAs are plenty accurate enough to be very competitive and not to mention the ability to be so compact with a long barrel.

Magazine capacity could be an issue, plus it is definitely more difficult to load mags with the bullpup design. I practice using an I.O.T.A. and 'Hide on the Range'. This lets me run through all of the mechanics while lying inside the house on some nice comfy carpet.

I'm contemplating taking my SRS to the Bushnell Brawl, but I also have an AR-10 that's just begging to have a 45 deg offset T1 attached too. 20 round magazines that (used to) cost $20 vs either 5 or 6 round $100 magazines...

Re: DTA SRS in Precision Rifle competitions

Jeff,

I run a DTA in local Tac matches and I am really sold on this platform. I like the compact-ness of the bullpup design. When shooting through ports or windows, it transitions with ease. No long barrels to pull and push through openings.

Mags are not really an issue. I shoot a 6.5 creed by Mark Gordon at SAC, and the DTA mags hold 6rds. I would love a 10rd mag, but mag changes are fast and efficient, so carrying a couple of mags with me, is no biggy.

As mentioned above, you must be comfortable with whatever platform you shoot. The DTA works for me. I practice with it weekly and so my gun and I are one.

Best of luck in all your matches!

Yeah, like these guys said, the DTA is perfect for tac matches. Shorter is better for barricades, and positional shooting. Here are some examples of why having a rifle that is much shorter is an advantage and quicker:
