Checking to see if anyone can help me troubleshoot an issue.

i Went to work up a load for a Gen 1 DTA SRS with a Gen 2 bolt today. It's a brand new gun, never fired.

When I pulled the trigger, click....nothing. Ran the bolt, tried again, nothing.

Took the round out and it looks like I'm getting a very light primer strike. I was using CCI BR2 primers. Tried several rounds, all the same....no ignition.

I uniform my primer pockets so I was thinking maybe the primer was seated a tad deep. It's never been an issue with any other rifle but I figured I'd try a new piece of brass without changing the primer pocket. So I took an empty brass, inserted a primer and chambered it.....click.....nothing.

This time it didn't even leave a mark on the primer, nothing.

Any ideas?

Here's the bolt face with the firing pin pushed all the way forward.

Here's the primer.....like I said, barely touched.

I'm gonna call DTA Monday but I'd like to get a head start on this or get some ideas to discuss with their support over the phone.....thanks.

Re: Primer strike problem

You don't have near enough striker protrusion. most have around .05-.055.

Judging from your photo it looks like you have .03 or less. If the striker threads into the cocking piece my solution would be to loosen the set screw and back it out a rev or whatever it took for it to measure the right amount.

Id also take a sec and polish the nose of the ejector as its eating the ass out of your cases.

Good luck!

C.

Re: Primer strike problem

I was thinking that Chad. I took the bolt apart and there's no way to increase the travel or protrusion of the firing pin.

Must just be an out of spec firing pin.

I was looking at that extractor.......I was wounding why it's being so rough on my brass.....never even fired the gun.

Thanks for the feedback, your knowledge is appreciated.

Re: Primer strike problem

Your welcome. One more thing to check (although I doubt it with the amount of brass transfer present on the ejector) is the headspace of the gun. If the shoulder of the chamber is too far forward it would essentially do the same thing; light strikes on the primer.

If this were happening though the extractor would more than likely have a bugger of a time purchasing the rim of the case when attempting to clear the chamber. Anything is possible till you sort it out though. . .

Re: Primer strike problem

Gotcha......I ran a Forster No Go in it and it wouldn't turn over, it would stop at about 45 degrees into the turn. A Go gauge went no problem.

I took a bunch of measurements and I'm gonna call DTA tomorrow.

I'm gonna see if they'll just swap me out a Gen 1 bolt anyways. The new design seems very impractical to change out in the field.

Re: Primer strike problem

When you say, brand new gun never fired, there is a chance a piece of debris is inside the bolt that prevents the firing pin from traveling the full distance. Take the bolt apart and inspect/clean thoroughly.

Re: Primer strike problem

Hey Chad....looks like you were right.

I called DTA today and apparently they had a batch of the second gen bolts that have undersized firing pins.

They're blue labeling me a new firing pin today......should be here Thursday.

Thanks!

Re: Primer strike problem

Glad to see you may have it fixed already. Thought I would add a note just in case you need it. I had the same problem with CCI primers and it ended up being my firing pin.

As you probably know CCI primers are pretty hard compared to others. The problem with my gun was I was using a titanium firing pin and it wasn't carrying enough inertia to the primer due to lack of weight. I switched to a stainless steel pin and haven't had a problem since.

Re: Primer strike problem

So my new firing pin got here today.

The old one measured 1.3815, the new one is 1.3921.

Doesn't seem like much of a difference. I guess I'll find out tomorrow if it works.

Did it work?

Re: Primer strike problem

.011 that might be enough to cause a problem
