Re: Idea! Official DTA SRS, HTI, Covert, Hunter Thread

That spiral fluting looks great. I can also say Mark does great work. I just picked up my new scope this morning and will get to test my new SAC barrel out very soon.

Re: Idea! Official DTA SRS, HTI, Covert, Hunter Thread

Looks like a candy cane. How much weight is it estimated to save?
That's definately not for me, but i bet I'd change my mind once you post of a pic with it mounted. I'm an all go no show kind of guy though. I do realize it is functional... More surface area to cool as well as less weight.

Re: Idea! Official DTA SRS, HTI, Covert, Hunter Thread

Thanks for the remarks, per Mark's paperwork with the barrel fluting cut 1lb .6oz the barrel weighs 5lbs 2.3oz. he says it weighs about the same as a 22" 308 stick. I just thought it would be different than the normal straight fluting. It's a shame you only see about 4.5",the hand guards cover the rest but when you look through them it looks wild!

I am new to the club thanks to Biffj!!

Picked this up from an individual today. He had never shot it since winning it in a contest.

It is a unfired Gen1 .308 with a 22" barrel. My question is, is it OD or FDE? It almost looked like a foilage green to me!!

Regardless, I can't wait to shoot her!!

Nice rifle there SSNFA. I have an OD green one coming myself. I'm right down the road in Fishers from ya. Maybe we shall run into each other at the range some day. What can are you going to put on her? I've been trying to order a DTA can but I can never get through to anyone. I hope I never have a warranty issue...

402... I retract my "that's not for me" statement. That is bad asssssss. I can't believe the weight savings either!

I'm out here a bit east of you and have built a few .338 Lapua cans for the rifles. They work with the smaller rounds as well. The DTA can is nice and pretty light so it may be worth waiting to get in touch with them. I've got another friend not too far from Fishers who also has a DTA SRS. His is in .338 Lapua right now. We're working on the subsonic conversions for his rifle. There are a number of really good choices for cals the rifle will handle very well. I think you'll be pleased you chose it.

Re: Idea! Official DTA SRS, HTI, Covert, Hunter Thread

Nick-my Gen 1 DTA is miles away in Idaho with my parents. I understand that some Gen 1s can be reconfigured to accept Gen 2 barrels. I would like to go this route as I also own a Covert (Gen 2 obviously). Do you have the range of serial numbers that can be upgraded? That way my parents could check out the number on my setup and see if it is eligible for upgrade.

Are you sure about this? Early Gen1 chassis can be upgraded (ie machined) for the monopod and it sounds like the new cheekpiece, but as far as I know a Gen1 chassis cannot be upgraded to accept the Gen2 barrel extension.

Yes, he is correct. While not Nick, and can't give you serial #s, I can explain how it works....

All you guys with Gen 1 Pin Guns. Look through the ejection port at your feed ramp. If your feed ramp is obviously not part of the aluminum chassis then you have a non convertable Gen 1 chassis. If you look inside the ejection port and you can see that your feed ramp is machined into the aluminum of the chassis itself, then you can send your Chassis back in to DTA and it can be machined for the Gen 2 barrel extension. Remember, by doing this you need to replace all your extensions as well......

Hope this helps.

Re: Idea! Official DTA SRS, HTI, Covert, Hunter Thread

That's good to know. I imagine chassis that fall into that category are the same Gen1 chassis that were already milled for the monopod (ie manufactured after 2009)?

Re: Idea! Official DTA SRS, HTI, Covert, Hunter Thread

I know my Gen 1 chassis is around serial 1375 or so and it is threaded for the monopod. I'll have to look and see if the feed ramp is early or later. I have a friend with a serial number around 1275 and his is not threaded for the pod. I wouldn't want to swap out to the gen 2 extensions. I've already got 4 different barrels set up for my rifle and in hundreds of barrel swaps I have yet to break a pin. All it takes is care to prevent damage. I use the gun for demos of both the rifle and suppressors and cal conversions and everyone wants to see the barrel swap so it gets done a lot. My recommendation to new owners is to put some anti-seize on the clamping bolt threads and under the brass washers to keep from galling or wearing the aluminum receiver out. A little purple loctite on the screws that hold the skins is a good idea too. I found them loosening up after about 500rds of 338LM.

Russ, thanks for the quick reply. It means a lot... My SOT has been calling multiple times a day since last Wednesday. He is using the number on the website, which is 801-975-7272, and pressing 1. I would appreciate a number that is being manned. Thanks...

I got a DTA mount back when they were still available.

IMHO, unless you'll have enough money for the upcoming Kahles with the DTA reticle (which looks very nice - great design!), I'd stick with the Razor and look for a 35mm mount. I think I saw somewhere that Spuhr makes one, and Jon A says he got 35mm mounts:
<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Originally Posted By: Jon A</div><div class="ubbcode-body">our 35mm mounts are in stock and ready to ship.</div></div>
I love my Razor (and the support behind it), and would rather not part with it.

One more thing - for a scope mount on such a rifle I prefer at least 30 MOA, better yet 40-45 MOA cant. DTA mount was 40 MOA, which would allow (all other conditions permitting
grin.gif
) aiming with reasonable convenience at targets up to 2km.

This is certainly true. However, there are some drawbacks one must take into account to decide if it's the best choice for how they're actually going to use the rifle. Many scopes won't be able to get a 100 yd zero with a 40 MOA mount. Some that will barely do it may not track as precisely at the very extreme of their travel. Also there can be some optical degradation by not looking through "the best part of the glass" on some scopes.

All those issues will affect some scopes and not others to varying degrees so there's no one solution. But they are things to keep in mind when choosing a mount. If one really is only going to shoot beyond a mile once in a blue moon or maybe even never, the side effects of a mount with more slope than he needs wouldn't be desirable to deal with on a daily basis. If one is going to do it a lot, then the side effects (which may even be negligible on some scopes) are a small price to pay for the increased travel. There is no one-size fits all solution.

I agree. On the other hand, Razor HD on a 40MOA mount on my SRS zeroed fine at 100m and gave me better than satisfactory performance through the entire range between 100m and 975m (haven't had the opportunity yet to stretch it further). I checked the tracking and was happy with it. So in my experience Razor agrees well with a 40MOA cant (36mrad adjustment range definitely helps), and gives me about 29mrad of dial range. For 338 Lapua it translates to 1850m of " pure" dial, and maybe 2050m if reticle-holding on top of that.

But we were talking about mounts and bases. I personally am disappointed that DTA stopped making 35mm mounts, and hope other manufacturers would step in - because long range would be much harder without a high-cant base/mount, and with DTA rail you must have a canted mount. I don't think there are rings on the market that could do that.

I can't wait until the a1 model starts shipping, sold off a few guns so I can get one. It's going to be a long wait lol

Re: Idea! Official DTA SRS, HTI, Covert, Hunter Thread

Bradu, I'm in the same boat and would sure like to see one in person-even the Gen II. Rarer than "hens teeth", but may try to link up with Hide member in my area that has one. None available at my local LGSs. Will need to keep looking and patiently wait.

The only difference between the A1 and recent Gen2s are the buttpad and option to get the cheekrest. Both are user upgradable parts if your chassis is tapped for the cheekrest (most chassis machined in the last 6 months). There is no reason to wait around. Call a stocking dealer and verify that the chassis is tapped. DTA said the buttpads will be available in the next few months. Good luck getting an A1 in that timeframe.

Re: Idea! Official DTA SRS, HTI, Covert, Hunter Thread

I am just going to wait because it will probably cost more to upgrade later than to buy it already setup. It's not that big of a deal to wait and I have already talked to DTA about shipping dates and a dealer about preordering one.

Re: Idea! Official DTA SRS, HTI, Covert, Hunter Thread

Long time lurker first time poster, I bought an SRS a while ago in Australia so I got savaged by the price. But I couldn't be happier, haven't really had a heavy range day yet as I wanted to do some hunting, but it hit pretty good groups for a rough zero. The srs performed perfectly, I have a vortex viper PST 4-16x50 and its chambered in .308. Hunting I took this pig down from the back of a moving ute with one shot only behind the ear from about 40m. not amazing by any standard but hell it was night time. I was also using the hornady zmax that I had as a joke, but I had run out of ammo in my bag... this is a pic of the biggest one I got. Over all I am happy with my rifle. as it is my first rifle however I will get other cals.

I think the only question not answered by this awesome thread would be if anyone has coated thier bolts?

I am considering Nickle Boron coating my Gen1 bolt. It seems very sticky when it is running the length of the receiver.

I am sure some of it is due to the gun being brand new, but I love the feel of Nickle Boron coated Steel AR BCG's running inside aluminum receivers so I would think it would feel the same on the SRS.

I had Robar coat mine in nickel-teflon (NP3). Definitely keeps it slick but it takes more force now to lock the bolt into battery, so at least on mine I would deduce that tolerances on the lugs are very tight. Especially for that reason I would hesitate to do nickel-boron on this because NiB is a much harder material. NP3 will break in on tight points.
