Looking for a Bolt Gun set up

Hey fellow gun lovers. I'm looking to get a precision bolt gun. And have heard and read a lot on the topic. I do get the best advice here so the question is where do I start? Between brand, optics, caliber there are so many choices and each with its pros and cons. I would just like to know if there's a starting point. My dad has a 7mm rem mag which I love and was thinking of starting there but I've also fired the .308 and loved that. Anyone wanna take this one?

Re: Looking for a Bolt Gun set up

Well,

it comes down to how much you want to spend, how much you shoot, and what the rifle's purpose is for.

Re: Looking for a Bolt Gun set up

Depends on your budget

I just built a Remington 700 aac-sd model with a Bell and Carlson M40 stock, swfa SS 10x scope, base and rings from midwayusa, and have been buying ammo here and there. Should be good for sub moa when its warm enough to go shoot. If I had to do it all over again I would just order a fn spr a1 from tac cord.

Re: Looking for a Bolt Gun set up

If you've read a lot on the topic then you've probably read the million other posts on here just like yours. Grab a decent remmy/savage etc, throw a decent scope and stock on it and run with it til you feel it's time to upgrade. .308 is a good caliber for all around lr/precision shooting. Not great but not terrible, make a choice and go shoot

Re: Looking for a Bolt Gun set up

Thanks guys I totally get what your saying. I guess because there's just so many options I just needed some actual opinions instead of just articles and other threads. Thanks for the advice..... Happy Hunting.....

Re: Looking for a Bolt Gun set up

Any rem 700,sand down the stock to float the barrel, ss 10x scope, burris zee rings, harris bipod, sandbag rear.

For caliber, .308 is the "standard", but consider also .243 because it has low recoil and will get the pills way out there. Don't worry about any exotic caliber at this point until you have several thousand round under your belt. (That's where I'm at) steer clear of magnum rounds out long action round that will kick more and possibly develop bad habits.
Find a shooting buddy with experience who will slow you down and correct your form..
Don't scrimp on cleaning supplies, get yourself a good Dewey rod, any quality jags and bore guide.
Have fun.
