Since not shooting the rest of my rifles as much right now due to not being able to get as much specific powder and bullets as I like, I've been shooting the HELL out of my .17! I'm loving it right now! Ammo is still cheap and always available on sale for $9.97 at my local Bi-mart.

Anyone else bringing out the .17 more recently?? I've neglected it a lot, and I've come to re-appreciate how awesome of a round it really is...

Here she is. FIRST time I've shot it since upgrading the stock and optics a while back... I think I made a thread, but it's old haha.

Re: .17 HMR. By far best round right now.

I totally regret selling mine last year. I wanted a more affordable trainer so I sold it for a 22lr, now I cant find any 22lr.

Ironically 17hmr is probably cheaper than 22lr right now.

Re: .17 HMR. By far best round right now.

just paid 17.99 for hornady vmax..

FML

still love the 17

Re: .17 HMR. By far best round right now.

I just found 17hmr for 10.99 at local Big R. They have been the best price in my area for a while. This was hollow points or ballistic tip btw.

Re: .17 HMR. By far best round right now.

I actually went as far as to buy a .17 hmr just so I have something to shoot where ammo is still on the shelves and easy to find. I am absolutely loving it so far though....

Hey thegrayham

What brand is that rifle and the name of the stock color?

Re: .17 HMR. By far best round right now.

Love my X-17, great little round for sure. I found a place online that if you order 500 rounds at a time you can get it for about 11 a box but once you add shipping its about 12 but atleast youre saving tax and a buck a box. Cabelas has a ton of it on the shelves so Im hoping that itll go on sale since theyve literally got 200+ boxes of it and nothing else lol.

Re: .17 HMR. By far best round right now.

Ammo to Go still has some 20gr winchester .17 HMR in stock.

I just got a few thousand rounds of the 16gr CCI green stuff for use here in CA ordered up; when they show the .17 is all I'll be shooting until things return to normal(er).

Re: .17 HMR. By far best round right now.

They are made by Savage. Just coated mine with Brownells teflon moly...

Re: .17 HMR. By far best round right now.

17 HMR has been one of my favorite rounds ever since I first bought one back in like 2003/2004.

I shoot them more than I ever shoot my centerfires. I never cared about cost, until now. I just always had more fun taking that little brother to the 5.56 to the range

Re: .17 HMR. By far best round right now.

17 hmr 20gr fmj is my choice for small game, although the new
30 gr ballistic tip 22 wmr has produced some pretty good accuracy too.
From a heavy barreled CZ 455 Varmint, both rounds have moa accuracy
out to 100 yards. No problem keeping groups smaller than 1.25 inches
off bipod and bag when wind is less than 10 mph. Rarely have to make
shots of that distance when hunting the brush here in Florida.
Most shots are less than 100 feet. Put the crosshairs at the top of the critters skull,
the round impacts pretty much where it needs to for an instant drop.

Not a factory stock Varmint, though. Trigger set at a woods safe 3.5 lbs,
bronze pillars, epoxy bedded receiver and barrel.
Without the epoxy/pillars, groups were 1.25 inches at 50 yards.

Its a Savage 93R17 BRJ and I think its the only color available for that model. Local gun store happened to have it on the shelf so I didnt really look into other options.

Re: .17 HMR. By far best round right now.

Damn, well I feel pretty fortunate about the prices then. The Hornady's are usually $12.97 everywhere, but I think it's just the Bi-mart in-store sales all the time. They rock.

Re: .17 HMR. By far best round right now.

I've had a cz452 varmint for a couple of months now and I wish I would have bought one years ago. Its alot of fun to get great groups at the range and not have to worry about re-loading or searching on your hands and knees for that last piece of brass you cant find. I dont think you can more fun at the range for the price.

Re: .17 HMR. By far best round right now.

I bought my 77/17 five years ago. I love the thing and have been using it more now as a trainer than ever given the availability of ammo.

Re: .17 HMR. By far best round right now.

Some of you guys have some really nice looking rifles there. I had a Savage in .17 HMR and miss it.

Re: .17 HMR. By far best round right now.

No doubt some fine looking 17s!! I have had mine for several years now. But have only painted it. What grain bullet do y'all prefer? I find the 17 grain shoots best up to 50 yards after that I find the 20 grain works the best.. Still cheaper than my other rifles to shoot.

Re: .17 HMR. By far best round right now.

What accuracy you guys getting out of these?

For sure. There are kooks around my area asking 27.00 for a 100 round box of mini mags and 50.00 for a 525 round box of Fed bulk.

The .17 is a blast to shoot. Accurate, a little extra "pop" when it goes off, and works great on critters.

Older crappy pic, but this was with the factory shitty stock at 100yds. It's much better to shoot now with my Boyd's, and I'm getting smaller groups. They are capable of great groups.

Re: .17 HMR. By far best round right now.

To rephrase- will a high end 17 group like a high end .22 does with match ammo?

Oh, well I don't have a HIGH end .22, but the .17 will be WAY more consistent at longer ranges than MOST .22's you see. I think the biggest difference is when you consider the cost of a HIGH end .22, compared to a FACTORY action and barrel .17 with an aftermarket stock. Hands down, the .17 is WAY more cost effective and a better all around rifle for multiple uses. Can't always say that about the .22...

I don't really think it's fair to compare a .22LR to the .17 though. .22 mag vs. .17 would be more "fair". It just takes too much money to make a .22LR a competitor if you are truly comparing the two.

I know you are strictly asking all costs aside, will they compare... And yes, they will, and then some for the .17. But most of these .17's are factory with different stocks and still grouping amazing for WAY less money!

Edit: forgot to add... Ammo is the only downfall with the .17. There's really no "match" ammo around, so I'm still basing it off of the Hornady's 17g's that do well through it.

ANYWAY... That's my spiel.

Don't know, however, when the 17 hmr started being used in rimfire club competitions
250 out of 250 scores became regular occurrences, so the 17 hmr was moved to it's own group.

Only example I can offer is my last sight in group before a hunting trip.
CZ 455 American 17 hmr, bedded tapered factory barrel ( not free floated )

17hmr-zero.JPG

Working from a test rest at 50 yards using CCI 20gr fmj
After boresighting and rough adjusting the scope, fired one round.
Impact was 5 up 1 left, dialed the crosshairs up to the poi, re-sighted center
then sent the remaining 4 rounds in the mag. that's that cloverleaf
left of the bullseye. 2 clicks left, 2 clicks up and ready to go.

Re: .17 HMR. By far best round right now.

Thanks guys. I ask because my CZ 455 Precision Money Pit is only a Lilja barrel and a magazine away from being a .17. I don't need the energy but if the accuracy was there than I could see the justification. It is only going to be a paper puncher/steel banger.

Re: .17 HMR. By far best round right now.

Give me a few days and I'll let you know how the 455 17 hmr Varmint barrels work out.
Ordered a 22lr and 17 hmr to go with my 22wmr Varmint set up.
FedEx says delivery Wednesday afternoon. Guess where I'll be Thursday afternoon?

Re: .17 HMR. By far best round right now.

I am very interested in how that 17 hmr Cz 455 barrel works out i bought a 455 22lr and stuck it in a Manners stock . I wouldn't mind getting the 17 hmr to swap out now and then.
