I am in the process of building precision/hunting rifle, I have ordered a new Stillers TAC30 left hand but now I need a barrel. I would prefer something in the 20" - 24" range, what would be the best that I can buy and still be able to carry it in excess of 10 miles on foot?

Thanks.

Re: Barrel Suggestions

Most people will tell you a medium Palma or Remington Varmint contour.
Check out Southern Precision Arms (bugholes.com) for what they have in stock.
any one of the brands that they carry will be good.
Most guys here will recommend a Bartlein, but jump on whatever is available

Re: Barrel Suggestions

It's hard to go wrong with any custom barrels that you could order from bug holes.com. Med to light Palma would do the job. What round are you wanting?

Re: Barrel Suggestions

I'd go with a Bartlein #3 sporter or a Krieger #4 sporter - they are just about the same dimensions & make for a good medium weight hunting rifle.

Kreiger or Hart are on my shopping list, I may consider douglas because they are local to me.

Re: Barrel Suggestions

if you are that concerned with weight, might want to check out some of the carbon wrapped options.

and I think IMI had graphite barrels for a while available.

.....if you can/want to spend $600-900 on a barrel.

I carry a Rem Sendero contour Benchmark barrel on my hunting rifle. You just have to go with at least 8 flutes. My rifle weighs 10lbs which is perfect in my eyes for a hunting rifle. To each their own I suppose.

Re: Barrel Suggestions

Grizzly industrial carries Barline barrels and are in stock. I ordered one on Friday (Jan 25) and it was at the gunsmith the following Tuesday. BTW, if you don't have a smith lined up, consider Chad Dixon...I just got action/bolt truing and the barrel installed and it's on it's way back already.

If weight is an issue, Just get a backpack to carry it- fold up mat type is good.

Regarding weight, Med Palma is a good as mentioned. The barrel will come in at 30" but you can have your smith cut it back to what ever you like. M40 may sound too heavy but you can flute it as mentioned above to reduce that a little.

For me weight has never been an issue, primarily because I target shoot and will just accept that when I hunt I'll have a heavy gun...my gun is an everything gun.

When you say "10 mile hike" are you stalking or is that what it takes to get to your spot?

+1, I have the some of the same intentions as you with the build I'm currently doing. I went with a Bartlein #3 and ordered from grizzly as they had it in stock.

10 miles total, stalking throughout the day, I really do not want to lug around a 20lb rifle with all my gear.

For a rifle I'm going to hump around, its going to have a thin barrel. Like heavy sporter thin. Light Palma at a max. Weight sucks to hump around, and heavy barrels mainly help for longer shot strings. One, two...maybe three shots? You don't need a thick barrel.

Suggest you talk to a smith that builds accurate hunting rifles.

Re: Barrel Suggestions

I like your thinking. 10 miles per day is a typical day in the mountains if you are serious about hunting and being successful. Hauling any extra weight will get old real quick and just slow you down.

As for your barrel suggestions... most of your rifle weight comes from your barrel, but most of your accuracy does too. Personally I like to build a rig that has the barrel contour I want and save weight on the other components. A Rem Sendero or a #5 contour fluted is what I prefer, and I've always been able to reload for these barrels easily. If you are building a small caliber you can reduce the contour more since there is more wall thickness in the barrel.
