AICS AX scope and bore height?

I really like the look of the new AICS AX and considering one in SA. The only thing I'm concerned about is the bore to scope center height. It seems really high because of the barrel shroud, are they comfortable to shoot. Looking at scope height and the cheekpiece it seems like a lot.

Re: AICS AX scope and bore height?

I have an AX338 and I find it very comfortable. I use an S&B 3-20 and a Spuhr ISMS one piece that is extra high, 34mm diameter and no base elevation. You could go a little lower and get a high base but mine fits me well. The lens caps on S&B run a little large and a high mount is just a hair to low and the cap will rest on the rail and lift the scope out of the front mounting. I would guess the one in the pic is a high mount with the flip cap removed

I have a Remington 700 action dropped in to an AX chassis. I had to go with high rings (1.06") and a 0 moa base to get my 50mm Nightforce F1 to fit. There is not enough room for Butler Creeks on the front. I have the cheek piece at the very bottom (not raised at all) and it's very comfortable to shoot.

You can also remove the top rail if you're not going to use a clip on NVD and get the scope a lot lower but you can get it too low.

Depending on your facial structure you can get the scope too low on the AX AICS when the top tube rail is removed. At least that's how it fits me. Your mileage may vary.

Re: AICS AX scope and bore height?

I set mine up using the 40 mm ax mount with a 56 mm schmidt bender. I also ueas the 7mm shim for the cheekpiece. I will admidt it took me a little while to get used to the ergonomics from the aw thumbhole. I will probably continue to use the aw for tac matches and the ax for prone only matches. After its all said and done i do prefer the aw to the ax but will continue to become more familiar with the ax.

In terms of accuracy there is no gain to low.
In terms of trajectory there is a small gain on go high.
In terms of ergonomics the AX is built for high mounts and therefor is the cheekpiece and more importanlty the buttplate placed very high.
The high placement of the buttplate makes the recoil to go more straight instead of upwards and the gun actually moves less.

On a normal hunting rifle that as all other hunting rifles have it's buttplate to low and a low cheekpiece I would also to for a low mount.
But the AX is not an ordinary hunting rifle
