I was in dicks and they had a few rem adl's for sale very cheaply. I thought about picking one up for the action. I don't know anything about an adl. Can I take the action and build a dbm rifle?

Yup, you just need a BDL stock and one of the various DBM bottom metals. Keep in mind that not all are drop-in's, depending on which stock and which bottom metal you go with, so the stock may need to be inletted for the particular bottom metal you want to use. Also keep in mind the screw spacing on the bottom metal.
There's also chassis style stock too, many of which have a DBM bottom metal built right into it.

I could be wrong, but I don't believe that there is any difference between the ADL and BDL action.
You can convert and ADL to a BDL simply by buying the a BDL stock and the BDL kit from brownells, so that leads me to believe that the actions are the same.

If you go with factory mag boxes, Remington makes different ones for the ADL and the BDL.

Yes, I bought ADLs at Dick's on sale and dropped them into McRee's chassis and then off to the races.
The cheaper option is to buy a used 700 5R take off stock here for 200. Send it to Badger for M5 dbm inlet 100 and buy the PTG bottom metal for about 100. Slap it together and you are good to go.

It's not 100% necessary- if you're using short pills (for example in my 308 I didn't need to touch feed ramps until I started loading over 2.85 OAL). The longer ones would sometimes bind (the feed ramp over hang mag length by ~1/64"- most likely to instillation error (my bad)) and required me to take a dremil and cut a notch into the bottom of the action for the pills to feed thru. I can post a picture if you'd like to see exactly what I'm talking about. (BTW mine was an ADL originally)

I have also bought 2 SA ADL's from Academy for $411 out the door and rebarreled them both. One I put in a Mcree chassis and the other in a HS M24 stock. If you are going to be loading you bullets long you will need to dremil out the feed ramp just in the middle for the bullet to ride up through. There is a difference between the two action though. The ADL action is drilled for the internal box magazine screw but is not used on a BDL. If you use the ADL box magazine you will need to shorten about 3/16".
