Well i stumbled upon a shield today while i was at the LGS. I have been looking for one for awhile, and today it magically appeared to me.

Now i have read lots of reviews on this firearm and almost everyone says it has a good trigger pull. HA. i own a good amount of glocks (and a sig) and it doesn't even come close.the trigger is supposes to be at around 6lb. but its seems much higher. I have yet to measure it though. Also when the trigger breaks, i cant stop myself from shaking the gun (dry firing)which is not a problem with any other firearm i own.

Another thing that i disliked, compared to a glock, is the trigger safety.with glock your finger pad can hit anywhere on the trigger. With the sheild it has to be at the lower end of the trigger. and if not it hangs up a bit before breaking. (it still breaks, just not cleanly)

also as other reviews state its a little hard to seat a full mag into the mag well.and the slide release is pretty stiff.

other than these issues, the firearm its self seems pretty solid/well made. its very easy to see why its a favorite among gun owners.

When I bought the gun today. in my S&W box that it came with a shell from the factory was included with the date marked as January 9,2012. so you can see these guns are being turned around as fast as they can make them.

Re: M&P shield review coming from a glock guy.

Your last paragraph took me by surprise. Seemed like you were not too impressed by it. Just curious, did you compare it to any of the other single stack sub compacts?

Re: M&P shield review coming from a glock guy.

Man I'm looking for one here in OK and can't find any. Hopefully one pops up before VDay. Thanks for the review.

Re: M&P shield review coming from a glock guy.

How many rounds have you put through it? A good cleaning and a few hundred rounds through the gun might work some of the stiffness out of the trigger and slide. As far as the magazine being stiff, good luck with that. You have to drive it in there to get it to seat. There are also some ways to work the saftey so it doesnt hang up.
The Sheild one of the nicest single stack compacts I own and also the single stack I carry most of the time.

You say:

January 9,2012. so you can see these guns are being turned around as fast as they can make them.

You 2013 right!

I looked at the kahr cm9,walthers,sig nightmare and the gun i was about to buy until i saw they had the sheild in stock..the beretta nano. all 9mm. and to be honest, i might pick up that nano still if i find one for a good price.like i said im a big glock fan and that nano is like a baby glock.

I gave it a bath in hopps right when i got home and because of the current ammo situation i only put 50 rounds threw it.(didn't want to hurt my stash)Im considering getting the APEX trigger. seems like a reasonable price and will fix the only real issue i have with the gun.

Re: M&P shield review coming from a glock guy.

I would also like to make the note that i wear jeans nearly 365 days out of they year. the shield with a 7 rd mag fits in my back jeans pocket like it was made for it and you cannot see it. it also does not pull my pants down because of weight.I really forgot i was wearing today.

i hate to say it but my glock 19 is probably going to start collecting dust in my glove box.As of right now, i feel more comfortable with my 19 but i can see that changing. This is my first true compact gun aside from my 26 which isn't really a pocket gun.The only thing i don't like about compacts is only carrying 7 rounds vs 16 in my glock 19.

i dont know why but im very very attached to my 19. i've been carrying it for nearly 5 years. Ive shot thousands of rounds through it and it has never once jammed/malfunction on me.(it jammed on a female who was a new shooter b/c of limp wrist but after i corrected her it never happened again)

anyone else attached to a particular gun they carry everyday?

Re: M&P shield review coming from a glock guy.

The only thing I can agree with is the trigger... After a bit of file and stone work I have it to a reliable 3.5 lbs and the first stage is buttery smooth. Now that the trigger is done...HOLY SHIT I love this thing!!!

Re: M&P shield review coming from a glock guy.

I have a recent DXX02xx Shield in 40 S&W and have no issues at all. A fully loaded mag locks up on an empty chamber or load chamber just fine. No issues with finger placement on the trigger/safety either.

Recoil/muzzle flip is less than my Ruger LCG that has a miserable even after a bunch of aftermarket parts.

I have around 150 rounds down range with one FTF in the 1st mag and no issues since...Taped the back of the slide it it was GTG.

Mags are an issue as no one has any available. The 40 S&W comes with a 6 and 7 round mag and I think the 9MM comes with a 7 and 8 round mag.

Re: M&P shield review coming from a glock guy.

All the M&Ps are great guns, however they have terrible triggers from the factory. I have a Shield. It is a great gun, and for about $70 it can be a great gun with a really nice trigger. I recommend replacing the factory sear and striker block with APEX's. This won't lighten the trigger pull, but it will make the take up smooth and the break much cleaner. Worth every penny.

Re: M&P shield review coming from a glock guy.

I'd love to find one in a shop because I think it'd be a great little gun for $450. Not so much the $600-700 that they are going for online, locally, used.
For that much, I think I'd rather have the M&Pc with twice the rounds and only .3" width difference.

Re: M&P shield review coming from a glock guy.

It's so tempting to try all the different platforms out there but I'm butt deep in Glocks. Glock sights, Glock mags, Glock tools, Glock trigger parts and just plain Glocks. My son purchased a new Smith M&P the other day with the military discount and it feels great in my hand but...just can't see starting over with another pistol. It's kind of hard to try another platform when this one works every time. Guess I'm a Glock fan.

Re: M&P shield review coming from a glock guy.

I also read the reviews about how great the trigger was and have to agree, I am not overly impressed with my example.

I also agree with..
"Another thing that i disliked, compared to a glock, is the trigger safety.with glock your finger pad can hit anywhere on the trigger. With the sheild it has to be at the lower end of the trigger. and if not it hangs up a bit before breaking. (it still breaks, just not cleanly)"
I found this interesting to find that although it would not prevent fire, it did cause a notable small "catch" in the pull cycle

Despite these small issues, I absolutely love mine.

Re: M&P shield review coming from a glock guy.

I'd love to try one of these out. The G26 isn't bad, but a slim 9 would replace my P32 in a second. I've tried to like the CW9 but with long fingers, that trigger pull is just way to long. I almost can't fold my finger back that far. I'd love to try the Shield or Nano if I can find one. I don't like the LCP for the same reason as the Kahr.

Congrats on your new gun and thanks for posting your thoughts and experiences.

Re: M&P shield review coming from a glock guy.

I am definitely a Glock fan, but love the shield and its thin profile single stack, along with light weight for my everyday IWB carry. Carried Glock subcompact .40 IWB for years but needed something lighter and thinner. This does the trick.

I agree about the safety and trigger, but not everything can be perfect like a Glock. Lol

Re: M&P shield review coming from a glock guy.

I just traded an XDS for a Shield in 9mm and love it so far!

Didn't like the XDS? I love mine.

Really? I fondled both (and i'm a M&P guy) and I kind of liked the XDS .45 more

Re: M&P shield review coming from a glock guy.

I didn't mind the XDS. I actually liked it. I just wanted a Shield. Feels more like my M&P and I'd rather carry more rounds of 9mm +P over less rounds of 45. Both are very nice.

agreed about 9 and 45 thing.

the xds was alot closer in size compared to my PF9 though. I think the shield is slightly larger?

So I finally found a Shield and the trigger does suck. The reset is WAY forward of what I'm used to with my other M&Ps. Guess I'll be dropping money on a Trigger kit...

I have an XDS and wouldnt trade it for anything right now. appendix carry the thing and it completely vanishes. If I dont have a shirt on you still cant see the gun only a small section of the holster most people would not even question.

saying that I am really interested in getting a shield for the fiancé. she likes my M&P 9mm, and shoots it pretty well so it might be worth looking into.

If only I had a nickel every time Glock aficionado referred to himself as a "Glock Guy"...

Im in the military and just bought my Shield a few days ago. Ive bought several glocks with the military discount but I didnt know S&W had one. Does anyone know if theres a mail in rebate for military or anything along those lines??

I am in the same boat as you!!! I am a huge Glock guy and a Shield 40 miraculously showed up at my local gun shop 3 hours before I got there for the first time since they have been out!!! To make it an even better story as I was filling out the paperwork a guy called in to buy one and they turned him down and told him it just got purchased...I know how he felt! THIS IS NOT USUALLY MY LUCK haha...Not a hug fan of the trigger but love shooting the gun and comparing it to my G36 its amazing to conceal!! Definitely going to be looking into a trigger!

Great observation on the trigger blade safety. I am in the market for the shield (am also a Glock guy) will looking into the safety thing before buying.

I like the XDs a little bit more than the M&P myself. but only was able to handle and shoot one clip out of the M&P I have put several more than that thru the XDs and love the way it shoots little recoil for such a small .45.
