Wanting to get a longrange 260 put together. What I have is a 700 rem varmint barreled action out of a VLS. Don't know if I want to rebarrel it right away or shoot it for a while. The barrel that is on it has not been shot much at all. But if I do rebarrel it I want to doit right. Also what barrel would you go with and what twist? Going to shoot 140 amax.

Thanks for the help.

Aim for 2,800 fps with a 140gr bullet. Some barrels are faster than others, and I think Remington barrels are relatively slow. I'm guessing you might want at least a 25" barrel, measured from the recoil lug.

If you want to rebarrel, a Bartlein would be a good choice. Offhand I don't know what twist to use, probably 8" or 8.5". Check these posts:

Agree on the 2800 for the 260rem, our rifles run at 2820fps with a 28 inch and our 15 inch LR pistols run around 2525fps and the 140s are still stabilized at 1000 yards. All of them run the same load and use a 1:8 twist. The rifles use Shilen Select Match and the one pistol has a Lilja 3 groove and the other had a Lilja but had a lot of round thru it and was opening up much to keep using. Waiting on a McGowen Rem-Age style prefit but hasn't arrived yet. Think any of the better grade barrel makers will work fine.

If your rig is shooting decent then use up the barrel for good practice while waiting on a new barrel to arrive. Not gonna be a quick turnaround unless your Smith is a really close friend and jumps you ahead of everyone. Might look into the Rem-Age setups, they seem to be working really well.

Good luck

Go 26" barrel and a 1:8 twist and aim for 140-142g bullet to be abbé 2800 and you will be good to go.

24" 1:8" is enough for 1Kyd, 28" will do it with lighter loads/pressure.

I get 2910 out of a 24" 1:8 AAC barrel with the 140 Amax. AAC had them on sale for 225 and 10 shipping. These barrels shoot fantastic. I have taken it out to 1000yd with no problems. Easy install with no gun smith needed. I did one and my friend also installed one and we get the same results. Nothing but good and a cheap alternative.

What load? That sounds like it is screaming. I would guess AAC is using the same barrels Remington does.

Thanks for the info guys. May just get a barrel and set it back and run the one that's on it for awhile.
