Hi everyone been a looker for sometime now ,but being my new lmt 308 just arrived, I decided its time to join and seek out suggestions from you guys on my build. This may take me the rest of this year due to funds oh it has the 16 inch barrel. So far I am thinking S&B 5x25x56 l/p P4 fine for optics , GDI mount , atlas bipod, leaning towards a gemtech (quicksand) suppressor. I also plan on ordering a 20" barrel for it so. What are your guys thoughts or suggestions on what I'm planning so far good ? bad? thanks guys

Re: New member with brand new lmt 308 seeking advice

Are you going to be humping this rifle around or shooting from a bench/prone 24/7?

I have a 20" CL LMT and it is bad ass. Big time sub-moa rifle (would say I average .75 to 1 moa, and can get that .5 and under group once in a blue moon).... eats all ammo with absolutely no issues to feed / eject. Both 16" and 20" LMT are heavy beasts so there is no way around this especially with the scope you have in mind. If you don't mind the extra weight, I like my 20" CL LMT. I'm using the larue LT158 scope mount with 10moa cant and my 50obj and cap just clears the rail by about 1/8". The scope you have in mind & set up sounds good to go.

Many people on the hide getting good results with the 16" tho!! even @ long range. Maybe just give the 16" a try and see how it works out for ya.

Those LMT CL barrel peform like friggen SS.

Vast amount of info here:

Re: New member with brand new lmt 308 seeking advice

best thing i have read. buy and good glass and work from there

Well that link didn't work
it was a post here about replacing the trigger spring only with one from a reduced power JP ar kit. cleans up the trigger for $10

id play first then change as you figure out what you need otherwise

ok

Re: New member with brand new lmt 308 seeking advice

It looks like you are going top shelf.

The only item I dont see on your list is a trigger. The LMT trigger isnt that bad. Try it out first to see how you like it. I realized I was into my rifle up over my neck so I just went ahead and bought the Giessele. I used the MWS trigger to replace the single stage in a 16 inch LMT CQB. I didnt try the trigger mod with the JP spring but it sounds like many are happy with it.

Re: New member with brand new lmt 308 seeking advice

I would say a 25 power scope on a .308 semi-auto is a bit overkill. I would go S&B 4-16x for magnification. YMMV

You are right.

...but with my intended use mainly being from truck to mat or bench it really is nice having that extra mag available.

I can always dial down my 5-25X but with a 4-16 I cant go passed 16X if I want to.

OP make the 20" barrel your last accessory item to buy (unless you really need the velocity). You may be pleasantly surprised by your 16" CL.

Re: New member with brand new lmt 308 seeking advice

Thanks elfster I will be humpin it alot but also shooting from the bench I realize the weight so for the humpin part I'll break out the ol drag bag so shoulders should be able to deal with it I hope lol. The mount I'm looking at is the GDI P rom l model 25 moa. I want to get the 20" just so I have it available if that makes any sense ?

I used the JP reduced power spring kit from Brownells and it cut my trigger pull in half. Now about 3.5 LBS. But only use the trigger spring not the hammer spring other wise you may get light hits on the primers. It worked so well I now have used the kit on 8 of my AR's with heavy trigger pulls.

Yes it overkill but my thoughts were just what pmclaine stated always be able to dial down don't want to need to dial up and not be able too at least thats where my head was in thinking of that scope plus explains my gdi mount scope will allow me to transfer scope to another rifle till I can own 2

Re: New member with brand new lmt 308 seeking advice

I just installed aPRS on my 20"ss LMT and this beast is pushing 15lbs
with bipod, and scope unloaded.

Re: New member with brand new lmt 308 seeking advice

Ordered mine with the 20" CL barrel in mid-August through my club. LMT listed a 20-24 week wait at the time so it could be soon but then again the recent craziness may have thrown a wrench into timing. Anyone know how these older orders are coming through from LMT?
I have a Trijicon ready to go.
I just got a new Geissele SSA that I haven't yet installed on my 5.56. Should I wait and see how I like the LMT trigger before installing?

Do the JP trigger spring upgrade for $10 first to see of its good to go. If so, you can sell the other trigger to cover your bipod or weapon lights.

I was forth on the list the 2 guys ahead of me opt. not to take these due to them having a 16" barrel they said they would wait for the 20" . I believe they screwed up by not taking cuz I have been told LMT is 2 yrs behind hope you get yours soon !!

Re: New member with brand new lmt 308 seeking advice

Throw away your supplied torque wrench and get a real torque wrench, if you don't already have one.

Don't argue, just do it.

Heed this.

He either speaks from experience or has heard the story about prepping for a range day and snapping a barrel bolt ruining someones fun. Perhaps he has experienced and heard.

I use a known spec Snap-On torque wrench. I was surprised how much force 140 inch pounds was. I dont think there is much room for error once you hit 140 inch pounds.

I bought some extra bolts from LMT back before the frenzy. They are $10 each. I dont think LMT will even sell them now as everything is tagged for complete rifles only.

They are special shear bolts that I wouldnt feel comfortable getting anywhere else but LMT. If you break one its not the end of the world. LMT knew we would break them and they are easy to remove, no gunsmith needed. The screws are hollow and you can use a small phillips screwdriver or similar as an "easy out" to remove the stub end. They break at a designed force so you dont harm your upper at all if you snap one. The only way you are screwed is if you dont have a spare bolt on hand. If anyone knows the source LMT gets them from do tell.

OP dont be scared by this. Taking the barrel off is a great feature. Do it when you need/want to. Just be confident in your torque wrench. Trident182 did a test shooting from about 110 inch pounds to 140 inch pounds and there was no real performance effect. If you are going to make an error from his test I guess its okay to be under torque. Better to have a good wrench though and be spot on if you can.

I tried the JP trigger spring. The weight was reduced in half, but it wouldn't reset. Pulled that and ended up with a SSA-E.

Re: New member with brand new lmt 308 seeking advice

hi, dont know if this is the right place to ask this, im new to site, been shooting for 20 years and recently have taken up long range , i was wondering if someone could give me a good load for a Tikka tactical 308 1 in 11 twist, my gun loves 155 gr fusion (for hunting ) and HPS target master 168 gr sierra for target, but i would be interested in the future to hand load to get me out to 100 yards, any help would be much appreciated, again, sorry if i have put this in the wrong section.

Re: New member with brand new lmt 308 seeking advice

I'm "only" going to chime in on the scope. I got a few 4-16's when I got started. I'm 55, and my eyes aren't so good. Nikon Buckmasters. Good, but on the "lower end" After screwing around with spotting scopes, I sprung for an 8-32 Monarch, with target turrets. I can pick out the little writing, on the target and shoot for the letters, and don't need to move to a spotting scope. I was happy. Then I came into some money, and got an 8-32 Night force. Wow! The Monarch is a great scope, but the Night Force is the "Mercedes". I looked at Schmidt and Bender but figured I was spoiled enough, didn't need the ferrari, stuck with the NF, and bought another gun instead. It came with a NF. Now i'm REALLY spoiled. But I have to say. I'm as happy going to the range with my Remmy 5R, and it's 8-32 Monarch, as I am shooting the Gap 10 with the NF. Well, almost, but you catch my drift. Value judgment, here. Is having a "couple fantastic things" better than having twice as many "nice" things? Welcome. Enjoy. Just wanted to take the time, and "relate" my thoughts. Just me.<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Originally Posted By: McCrazy</div><div class="ubbcode-body">I would say a 25 power scope on a .308 semi-auto is a bit overkill. I am surprised you encountered that problem. Many of the guys on the hide have reported the same or nearly the same results I got with my LMT MSW. As i said I installed the JP trigger spring on 8 other AR's I own. In some of them the result weren't quite as good as the MWS. My Armalite AR10A4 showed the least improvement only a 2 lb drop in the trigger pull. Most were much better than that.

Re: New member with brand new lmt 308 seeking advice

Here's some advice, sell it to me for $2500! That's a fair price or at least was, a couple of months ago, great gun.

I hope it holds up to its rep.

Re: New member with brand new lmt 308 seeking advice

You stole it for $2800, that gun would easily sell for $4K, maybe even $5 or $6K right now.

Being serious, I'm using Nightforce 3.5-15 X 50 scopes with a MOAR reticle and zero stop, (used to use S&B but couldn't see the price difference between them and the Nightforce) Call Randy at Mile High, his ads are all over here, and he'll hook you up with everything you need and give you a discount for being on the Hide. Plus he's super knowledgable and a good guy to know.

But I will give you $3K today!

Re: New member with brand new lmt 308 seeking advice

Hey snipe thanks for the lead I'll be sure to pick his brain along with your all's .. I am tempted to put it for what they are getting, but I really don't feel like waiting for another with the word they are 2 yr backorder lol

Re: New member with brand new lmt 308 seeking advice

They are loosing interest on GB lately. Take a look and no one is bidding much over 2K anymore. I would guess 3K or less will get you a MWS within weeks. 'Bout time those credit card bills started piling up.
