I'm running a m1a rifle with scope, I need a way to stow it when I hike. I'm running a Cables frame and large Alice. I know there options Gunslings or knock offs including Voodoo tactical and some Chinese. I want to use my exacting setup, as the frame lets me take my tent and sleeping sytstem for long hikes or hunts.

Eberlestock...

Mystery Ranch...

The above mentioned Kifaru...

If your pack is not already set up for rifle carry then your options there are limited.

+1 on the Kifaru. Simple, fast and effective. You don't have to sling it under your arm if you don't want to - you can sling it right to the top of the pack.

I can fit my hunting stuff and enough camping gear for 3 days or so in my eberlestock gsii...including tent, sleeping pads, mess kit, tripods, food, water, etc..

Not a lot of room left for the pack out I imagine...

As Jason mentioned above the Kifaru holsters have great reviews and can be adapted to various packs the easiest in my opinion!

Ceylon (ceylonc here on the Hide) at Deltaoutdoorsman suggested an Eberlestock scabbard. Unfortunately, I don't recall the model. It is adjustable in girth to fit most any rifle. I can slip an AR w/o optic, or adjust to accommodate my McM A5 / 700 / 50mm optic. This is not a drag bag, but a protective scabbard.

If actual external frame pack, a coat hook like those on the wall of a house, drill holes in the pack frame and then bolt the hook to the frame, hook weapon on the hook by its sling, is another option. This is the way we did in Alaska on Kelty and freighter framed packs for 20 years, we had one hook on each side of the pack frame.

Used this 20mi one way into the mountains on a hunt in AK, not the greatest, but beat a sling for the hike, simple, and fast access. Just strap it to the frame if fast access is not a concern.
