Searched, didn't find much - thanks for taking the time to read and respond if you have experience or a studied opinion.

Having a Bighorn build done, so I get to pick a trigger, which gives me the option of choosing safety location.

I am accustomed more to AR15 formats, so the Rem 700 - style safety location is NOT natural to me any more and has cost me a few shots on hogs, etc. Yes, I can become accustomed to it and negate that disadvantage over time (and will if I get resounding feedback to stay with it,) but it has me wondering about other options.

I have heard of safety levers INSIDE the trigger guard (dealt with Mini14 and M1A rifles for years with no issues) and wonder if that might be the right option for me.

A contributing factor to the mental debate is that I will be running a pistol grip-style chassis, which takes me even farther from the normal safety lever than even a traditional Rem700 stock.

I understand some folks desire to "not have anything other than the trigger in the trigger well" but it is reflexive for my finger to stay well clear of the trigger guard until a shot presents itself, so I'm not really worried about safety. More interested in function, reliability and real-world viability. Not building a bench gun - down and dirty hog killer and paper puncher out to 500. If I won't give up anything in terms of quality, but WILL make the off-safe motion faster and more efficient then I'm interested.

Never seen one, much less manipulated one, so I appreciate user feedback and experienced counsel.

Product suggestions appreciated, as well.

Thanks!

Sounds like a great idea just as quick as an AR safety would have to be drawn up a couple times and worked over.

Best advice draw up some plans and make friends with a machinist.

Re: Safety lever INSIDE the trigger guard - opinions?

Aren't there some commercially available FCG that already have a trigger guard safety? I'll do some googling...

I believe Jewell has a bottom safety option. You might check it out.

The Sako TRG has a safety in the trigger guard and it's a great setup. Personally I don't use the safety on a bolt gun much, however either Jewel or Shilen I think make the one with the low mounted safety.

Huber also makes a bottom safety trigger.

Re: Safety lever INSIDE the trigger guard - opinions?

Thanks for the responses so far! On a range line, I might not use the safety much either. Down on the river bed crashing through the brush or moving across country, I DO use it - but unless I really pay attention I waste some time getting off safe when I need to.

Jewell on my 6BR rifle. Sunny Hill Trigger Guard. I could easily get used to this set up on every 700 and clone I have without issue. The one item that sticks is that when you have a round loaded, putting it on safe requires a rear motion of the lever, in a hurry or quick situation you may miss the lever and pull the trigger.

I wouldn't run any other on a bench gun, field rifles, not sure. I haven't changed out all of my others to this style yet.

Re: Safety lever INSIDE the trigger guard - opinions?

Am I the only person that gets nervous pulling a lever that's inside the trigger guard TOWARDS the trigger on a loaded rifle?

I get it, don't let muzzle ever cover anything......

Still, seems counter-intuitive to me.

At least Garands, M14s/M1As and mini-Xs have a trigger guard between your finger and trigger as you pull rearward on the safety to engage it.

I am a target shooter, so rarely use the safety, but feelI have to be uber-careful engaging the safety on my TRG.

Re: Safety lever INSIDE the trigger guard - opinions?

Yes, never leaves my mind. Guess that is why I have a tendency of lifting the bolt.

Re: Safety lever INSIDE the trigger guard - opinions?

I have one on a huber with an elisio chassis. I have no issues with it. You are sub consciously over carfull with the operation of it. Mine is on a match gun. The truth is I use it almost never but I do use it some. I'm no operator but I would not have it on a gun for anything but a match gun. Not on a hunting gun either. I highly recommend huber triggers. I love mine.

Re: Safety lever INSIDE the trigger guard - opinions?

The right order would be to have it on safe and THEN chamber a round, I guess? If you went off safe, then BACK on safe without firing....THAT would need to be a very deliberate move, there. Hmm...I hadn't thought of that. That happens routinely if a hog moves behind cover.

Are the Jewell and Huber both able to be manipulated by trigger finger alone or are they stiff?

Re: Safety lever INSIDE the trigger guard - opinions?

The Jewell operates with very smooth without much force at all. Yes easily with trigger finger.

Re: Safety lever INSIDE the trigger guard - opinions?

Thanks, Graham. As if I didn't have that echoing in my head on a routine basis ALREADY.. :)

Usually that would be fine, but pushing through low brush and high weeds down on the creek makes me want to guard against the branch-in-the-trigger-guard thing.

Re: Safety lever INSIDE the trigger guard - opinions?

Cover safe works better.

Wait...what does that mean?

Re: Safety lever INSIDE the trigger guard - opinions?

Never thought of that. I'm an idiot.
