I have a JP LRP-07 (308) with a 22" barrel. I'm starting to wish I had ordered shorter. What do you think about having it cut to 18"? Any problems with the rifle length gas system on an 18"?

Thanks,
Mike

Somehow, I think that would end up costing me a bit more than having it cut.

Re: 18" 308 with rifle length gas

You'll probably need to open the gas port a little, especially for where you live for winter conditions. Lighter loads and bullets with short bearing surfaces will be harder to run the action reliably without gas port work.

Re: 18" 308 with rifle length gas

The rifle has an adjustable gas block. Not sure how much leeway that gives me.

Re: 18" 308 with rifle length gas

You can have it cut and see if it will cycle with the lightest load you'll ever shoot in it, in cold weather. If it cycles and locks the bolt to the rear in the coldest temps you plan to shoot in, with the lightest load, there's your answer.

Re: 18" 308 with rifle length gas

At this point, I'm looking for solutions out of frustration. The rifle shoots fine, but just doesn't feel right to me. I'm not sure if the barrel length is even the issue, although it feels quite muzzle heavy. The PRS stock also feels like the LOP is too long. As you know, it goes from "long" to "longer". I tend to shoot my other ARs with the stock closed or on the first notch. That seems to put the balance in the right spot for me.

Re: 18" 308 with rifle length gas

my dpms lr308 with 24"bull barrel was cut back to 18" and ive never had an issue since. accuracy been dead on as well.

very glad i cut it back. ive since put on a CTR stock, carbine buffer tube and slash's buffer and spring. mostly run my 1-6x scope instead of the 6.5-20x shown on it but the hogs dont seem to notice the difference

in doing these mods and looking at dimpling or turning the barrel ive realized i need to just do a 300blackout sbr build. so thats next. after the madness settles down or if parts pop up occasionally.

i have the JP 18, but wish i would have got the 20, it's just a bit faster.

i say stick with the 22 if you're going beyond 800 with heavies
