GunsmithingCan a Steyr SBS Tactical barrel be threaded?
I will have one waiting for me at home during my next R&R. The barrels are press fitted, correct? Can a barrel like that be threaded? I am assuming it will have to be chucked in the lathe to turn it down...not so easy with an action attached.
Certain lathes have a headstock large enough to fit the action into without having to spin the barrel off. Just depends on the smiths tooling he has in the shop really.
If you are talking about threading the muzzle for the can, I would ask what is the muzzle diameter? I ask this because I have an SBS that I use as one of my hunting rifles and the barrel is not heavy enough for a can or a brake
I was just measuring my SBS Steyr Pro Hunter barrel to decide if it could be threaded for a SureFire break and suppressor.
The outer diameter is 16mm/ 0.635". The inner diameter is 7mm measured with a caliper (7mm remington maganum). This leaves very little to work with for threading.
I was wondering if the barrel would have to be shortened a bit to get some more taper metal to work with.
I'll have to call George at GAP to see if he can tell me if I'll be able to do it.
That being said, I've seen photographs of my rifle with a can on it on Brittish forums.
