Guys... I'm wondering what you guys use to carry your guns around in?

Got a GAP 10 with 22" barrel... Want to protect the scope and gun, as it'll be at the range and hunting trips, back of the truck, etc.

Soft case sufficient? if so, what kind you guys recommend?

Pelican hard case?

Thoughts?
 
I am a really big fan of the pelican cases. If you are moving it alot and have the space they are a fantastic option. They are very costly its true, but when you have a gun getting into the 2k-5k range it just makes sense to have it properly protected. Just be sure to take your time when doing the foam cut out and you'll be really happy with what it does for you.
 
I don't keep rifles in hard cases unless I am traveling on a plane. They are to bulky and heavy. My GAP10 is in a TacOps drag bag. I have another rifle in a Eberlestock rifle bag. I have one more custom made drag bag. I like the TacOps best overall. The Eberlestock would be great if the pouches on the side were sewn on instead of snap on. The snaps are always coming loose on mine.
 
Pelican 1720 works good for any AR platform they are about 44" X 15" X 6", you can break the gun down and cut out the center pc of foam, and have everything nested and protected. Soft cases can't do that. Just my .02
 
I use a Pelican 1700. It's an LMT with a 16" barrel so it fits well.

Tac Ops drag bag.

Its like an issue Seabag. There is no end to what you can stuff in it and the rifle is well protected.

Downside - It gets heavy.
 
Soft case from midwest industries , plenty of padding when it bounces in the back of my truck.
 
I personaly just ordered a elberlestock G4 operator bag ....it has a built in scabbard , they also have other bags to fit your needs check out the link I think some one already posted one
 
I tote my GAP 10 around in a Tac Ops drag bag. However, if I was going on a long trip for camping, backpacking, or such I would put it in a hard case to protect it from damage by all the other gear jammed in the back of my Jeep. Never taken it on a plane trip but the law requires a hard case for that.
 
I just got my GAP10, I currently have it in a Pelican Storm 3300. it works great and is very secure. I have already traveled with it on an airplane and it was the perfect case for that. However, the case with the Rifle in it weighs 50+ pounds so I would recommend a good soft case for ease of going to he range. But a hard case for airline travel. good luck
 
I agree that a hard case is more for airline travel...or if you needed to toss it in the bed of your pickup on a long trip. A drag bag is nice for just about anything else. One nice option is to add the pelican or storm later (if required), but take out the foam and the rifle/drag bag will fit right in. When you get to your destination, you have the drag bag to use until the return trip.

I started out with the foam-cutting routine, but quickly tired of it due to recutting every time I changed something on the rifle....optic, bipod, buttstock, etc. Foam ended up a mess...now a soft case holds the rifle for 90% of my trips, and the whole mess fits into the same pelican when needed.
 
I went with a Pelican 1750 for my repr 20. Beating over the country roads I drive out to the range I don't worry about it in the bed of the pickup. One of these days I will hot wire cut out the foam for the rifle and some gear.

I run Voodoo Tactical bags for all my rifles... the 42 inch twin rifle bag for both of my Sig 716s, its plenty durable, holds mags, batteries for the optics, slings, etc in the pouches and so far its very durable. I have one in Coyote, one in OD for my savage, one in black for my shotguns. I plan on buying another for my new savage, hard to beat for the price (they arent "cheap", but for the price, the value is incredible) and you can get them on Amazon for less than retail with free shipping :)
I had an Optics Planet OPMOD drag bag but it was pretty cheaply built and the straps ripped off after a couple months.
 
Does anyone know of someone who produces custom soft cases? I can generally find what I need in a rifle case but my competition shotgun is a different story. I am using an xrail and am yet to find a case that fits well. Given the diameter of the system, it tends to shorten the usage overall length due to the budge.
 
I use my SKB case. It can hold 2 guns at at time. And it does not need the foam to be cut. I agree when the foam is cut it protects the gun better. But then that case will only fit the gun it is cut for. So the SKB works well for me because I can put any gun inside the case.

Roger That. I have a wife and three daughters (23, 21, 17) and each one of them likes the case for being light-weight, just perfect when they go shooting & mudding and the soft case wouldn't be enough to protect glass.
 
I went with a pelican 1720 case. It's amazing. My thought process is if your willing to spend 3-5k on a rifle (plus a scope, etc.) you need to have a reliable case. Pelican is just that.... just my opinion
 
I like soft cases because they fit in my car's trunk better, I typically use Galati cases for my AR's. I had to buy a case specifically for the AR-10 because it's so big, but I can't recall the manufacturer. When I go for a hard case I grab a Starlight.
 
Soft cases protect against scratches, hard cases protect against bends.

Let's be honest, if they weren't big, heavy, awkward, and expensive, we all would use a hard case all the time.

Depending on the situation I use pelican 1750, eberlestock x3 lodrag, tac-force DTS, Eagle HSRT or Eagle DB-BS-CCA with scope and crown cover

Another for Voodoo bags-have three and they've held up well hauling two guns at a time and lots of loaded mags, bipods, tool boxes, etc. Whatever you do, spend a little coin and go quality up front.

Not a GAP-10, but I can tell you my 22" JP is 43.5" with a PRS and large brake. I can't imagine the GAP being much different so plan on it needing a 1750 (or Storm 3300).

Personally I throw mine in a TacOps drag bag for daily stuff, or a 36" (broken down it fits easily) Sert rifle case if the drag bag is occupied. The Sert case then fits perfectly into a Storm 3100 (size akin to Pelican 1700) if hard case is required.

For trips to the woods, or range, I use a cheap (relatively speaking) soft case because I am in control of the weapon. If the weapon is going to be out of my direct control, I use my pelican case. I have any number of different cut out profiles for my pelican case because I found a foam wholesale place, and bought a bunch of foam.

Whenever the weapon is out of my control, it goes in a hard case. I have a number of hard cases, and pick which one depending on the risk to the weapon. If my buddy is transporting my rifle along with others, it may just go in one of the cheaper, smaller hard cases. IF the airline gets it, I go with the pelican..

My control = soft case
Buddies control = minor league hard case
Shipping/airline/baggage handler = pelican(only because a steel vault is a no go.)
 
Pelicans. 1720 case form my LMT MWS. Everything fits great and there is still a little room to add things latter if I decide I want to put more stuff in the case.
 
Yes. They are an expensive investment that should be wisely transported. However, they are battle field weapons. They do not have to be pampered and transported like a nitro glycerin. For match transportation the hard case is the way. For daily range visits and simple drag bag suffices if its big enough after you take out all the drag from last Halloween.
 
Padded bag normally; Same bag in hard case; Hard case with fitted foam. Depends on mode of travel, etc.
