    Hey everyone,

I've recently lost the opportunity to shoot on some local private property so I'm looking for a new place to shoot. It was a big surprise to me considering that I'd been going up there for over four years and never had any issues or complaints. When I called up to see if it was alright to go up one weekend I was simply told that I probably wouldn't be allowed to shoot up there anymore. I wasn't given anymore of an explanation but I what I got from the neighbor was that one of the uncles that ran the family properties was getting old and wanted his kids to start taking over responsibilities. I guess one of the first things to do for them was to kick out any non-family members and change the locks on the main gate. It was a big bummer to say the least but it's their property so respect their decision. I'm a member of a local range but that only goes to 100 yards and the new Peacemaker facility that's in Glengary, WV sounds nice but ranges are limited for non-members and I can't afford membership fees.

I'm just outside of Winchester so ideally I'd like to find someone within about 45 min that doesn't mind having another Hide member to shoot with. I'm pretty self sufficient, I have my own steel targets, stands, paint, etc...just no place to shoot. So if you're in Frederick, Warren, Clarke, Loudoun, Shenandoah, Hampshire, Morgan, or Berkeley County hit me up and lets see if we can't make something happen. Thanks for looking.

    Re: VA & WV Members

    Afternoon,

I was going to mention the Quantico gun club is open a lot any more on the weekends. I know It’s a little outside 45 minutes for ya but you can usually shoot 1-150-300 meters and then on days they have range 4 open you can shoot out to a grand. I do most of my shooting there but the thing is it’s not very convenient for the average reloader. Tell ya what though I’m always interested in finding new places to shoot, not to mention places that will let me shoot my 338 at things a little longer than 1000 yards. So if you find somewhere or feel like trying out Quantico for a change let me know and we can hook up and do some shooting…

    Mike

    Re: VA & WV Members

I'm also a member at Quantico Shooting Club (QSC), I'd be happy to link up and do some shooting there. I usually do USPSA and 3-Gun stuff, but it's nice to take my long guns out and stretch their legs once in a while...

    Re: VA & WV Members

If your ever down in Southwest Va (Abingdon) let me know as we have a place to shoot out to about 2800yds.

    Re: VA & WV Members

The membership at Peacemaker just dropped to $200/year. That's a steal for the ranges that you have access to. If you're in Winchester, I'd jump on it. I drive all the way from Potomac MD at least twice a month to shoot there now.

    Re: VA & WV Members

Agree with ZLBubba, Peacemaker for $200 is a down right steal. I live in NoVa, and travel the 75mintues atleast twice a month to go there, it truely is worth it. If you dont want to join (which you should), you can pay $15/day and shoot on the 25/50/100/200/300 range (200/300 only have steel right now but will have electronic targets within a few months, never going to have normal paper targets though).

Also, check out 340 Defense, just over the boarder on 340, nice cheaper outdoor range with 100 and 400 yards i believe.

    Re: VA & WV Members

I am moving to Reston/Herndon in a week. Once I get settled in, I would like to find a place to shoot. I was shooting over at Thunder Valley in Ohio and I may still go there on occasion. However, I would like to find something closer to my new location. Let me know what the options are.

    Thanks in advance

    Re: VA & WV Members

Ian, man I am on the wrong end of the State, closer to Excalibur , but if you are down this way, I always enjoy shooting with you.

I would love to shoot at TVP one day, that place looks Great.

    Re: VA & WV Members

I live in Manassas, I actually really like it. I work in Herndon (right where 28 crosses the toll road on the Herndon side), my commute is pretty easy from Manassas

    Re: VA & WV Members

Figured I would bring this one back from the dead. I just got out of the Corps and now live in Gainesville, VA. I'm going to be getting my membership to Peacemaker within a month or two as I just got the call from Mark@SAC that my rifle is done. I plan on attending the course at Central Virginia Tactical as I have never shot a scoped rifle before and a few months ago got the urge to learn. If any members guys in this area head out that way I'd love to tag along and see if I can pick up a few things.

    Re: VA & WV Members

Anyone do any coyote hunting in SWVA?

Those are some smart decisions. Ed Shell is an excellent LR instructor. He'll ground you in fundamentals, many of which people take for granted.

The membership at Peacemaker is a great idea. Myself and a few other Hiders are members as well. You can shoot steel to 300 damn near any time you want, and when it gets warmer, you can use the 600 and 1000 yard lines. I really like Peacemaker. I just wish it were closer to DC.

excaliber I would love to get down there and shoot some long range, even though thats 4 hours from here. I'm sure my 308 won't go 2800 yds though.

I think I'll checkout Peacemaker. It's about 1.5 hours away for me, Quantico is about the same, but I'd have to get a sponsor to get on Quantico.

I've been looking at peacemaker as well, but I hate the idea of shelling out $200/year when I'm not sure how often I will even be able to get up there to shoot.

Frankly, when Peacemaker was $400/year, it wasn't worth it to me. The range is 80 miles from me in Potomac, MD. However, when they went to $200, it became worth it. Here's my rationale. I asked myself how much is one LR shooting session worth it to me? For me, that's at least $20. Add in that I can test out pistol loads and use the tactical bays, it's easily a $30 value. So, that means that if I can make it to Peacemaker just 6 times a year, the membership pays for itself (though I'm not including gas and ammo, obviously). Since I make it to Peacemaker at least once a month, it's more than worth it to me to maintain a membership. Hell, this year I might even take up sporting clays just for shits and giggles. At the $200 price point, Peacemaker is a good deal if you live within two hours.

I've been mulling it over, but I'm about 3 hours out. I was thinking about making a trip up to use the 300yd range ($15/day if I'm not mistaken) just to get a feel for the trip, and the place. I too had thought about the sporting clays as well, just to do something different.

At $200/ year it's on the bubble. However, I spent close to $225 this weekend in gas to go to Ft. Gordon and it's about $140 in gas round trip to TVP in Ohio. As a plus they have hand gun and shotgun. I want to give it a look here sometime soon.

I started a Northern VA group for those of us located in the NOVA area. Feel free to join the group and start a discussion.

Just a couple things to revive the thread.

I did join Peacemaker about 3 weeks ago. I'm looking forward to doing the tactical rifle shoots when I can. The one this weekend is out as I'll be in Ohio for my anniversary.

I also got a membership at Silver Eagle Group since that is really close to where I'm living.

Since I created the Northern VA group, I can change the name to VA & WV shooters, or I can leave it the way it is. FYI, we can have our own group discussions in there, so consider joining the group.

Berkeley Co. West Virginia resident.....a Peacemaker RSO and been there since they built the first bench.

I highly recommend you at least take a tour of the facility - you won't be disappointed. Just ask at the HQ to look around.
There's also public access if you're not into a membership - $15 gets you access to the public ranges all day.

How do we join said discussion group?

After reading all the Hide folks who are considering Peacemaker memberships, maybe it would behoove me to create a "Peacemaker Precision" group on the Hide. (If only I knew how to do that)

I can guarantee that if you come out to Peacemaker on Fridays, you'll have the best group of long range experienced RSOs running the public range. ;)

Ok, I created a Peacemaker Precision group for all of you Peacemaker members who are interested. Mike, I've also joined the NOVA group, if you change the name to include WV, that would make me happy. lol

I can't change the name (probably have to be an admin to do that), I did change the description to include E WV, W MD and S PA. Also joined the Peacemaker Group.

I just wish Fridays was longer than 600 yards. Was kind of boring shooting 3" groups on that 10" steel plate. (BTW thrusty, that is what your GAP will be capable of.) I think I am gonna try for next Thursday afternoon so I can get some good dope at 1K.

Off topic from long range, but will any of you gents (or ladies) be attending the IDPA match at Fairfax Rod and Gun Club (deceiving name it's in Manassas). They have a great facility and their rifle/pistol matches are open to the public. I believe the IDPA matches fill up quick so you have to join their site (quick and easy) and opt for IDPA notifications. As soon as they open registration you will receive an email. I have an LEO entrance test that day but if I can get on the early string I should be attending prior to.

I just popped in and joined the Peacemaker group. While I'm only in that neck of the woods around 1x a month or so for work purposes, I'd gladly make the drive over especially for any organized long-range events or other matches when available.

Thanks for heading up the creation of this group, thrusty!

This has been my only quam with Peacemaker and why I haven't even visited. I get semi-regular access to 600 yards @ Ft. Meade or I drive up to New Holland for 600. I am really desperate for a place that has a 1k range open 7 days a week.

Posted in the group but just in case anyone missed it, IDPA match at peacemaker this saturday. Very beginner friendly IDPA clb and welcoming. Registration is open on their website, I'm doing the A.M. string if anyone wants to carpool or meetup. It's really the most fun you can have with a pistol with your clothes on...umm, errr nevermind.

Hello out there. Does anyone know when the Peacemaker range will be open? Their website says it's closed. I'll be in Virginia for about a week more and would like to visit there.

Hey Clint, it all depends on the weather... The berms have been frozen and the snow doesn't make traveling to the ranges very easy. But, mostly, we've been closed due to the cold temps creating hardened backstops.

We will be back to normal hours in March...till then, call ahead or keep an eye on the website.

Being as this is a VA-WV thread, I would like to post about Range82 in Midland, VA. It is quite a bit closer. They only have a 100 yd line, but their backstop is covered for 30 yards. I am a member there. I try to get out every Saturday. Alas, life tends to have its demands. In any case, shooting is shooting. Aim small miss small and all that. I am working on getting 1 MOA groups there.

I am hoping to get up to Peacemaker. Having served in the Vermont Mountain Battalion, I am having a hard time imagining hardened backstops after a week of subfreezing temperatures. We used to test IceCrete: field expedient cover made with snow, foliage, and hot water. I would like to some terminal performance pics, if you have any. Then again, it is your range, thrusty, and I have never been there... I am intrigued tho'. I'll be coming up VA-522 if anyone needs a ride.

It's not my range...I do work there though. The range is open for this weekend if you'd like to stop by.

In our area we have days it snows, then days it melts, then days it freezes and then days it thaws again and then re-freezes....all in the same week. So yes, when you have soft soil designed to absorb impact being overly saturated with water and then exposed to weeks of freezing temps, the top layer can produce some interesting ricochets. With the amount of people we see on a weekly basis, it's best to error on the side of safety under these conditions.

I hated Quantico, Range 4 when I was a member was never open and Range 1 is a 100y and 300y range.......200y is UNUSABLE.

I certainly can understand erroring on the side of safety. It's just good business! Hope to be up in March or April.

Peacemaker has worked out well and I have taken advantage of all the multi-discipline options available there. Good people there too.

I thought I would use Silver Eagle Group more than I have, so I have been waffling on cancelling my membership for a while as my 1 year commitment is up. No more waffling though, Silver Eagle is done. Let's just say I discovered where the owner likes to contribute his money and it's incongruent with what you would expect from a gun range owner. That pushed me over the edge. All I can add is if you are thinking of joining or shooting at Silver Eagle, research throughly and make your own decision.
