Like above, I'd say talk to the neighbors about your intentions. Reinforce the fact the fence is to protect their livestock from getting into harms way, but in a non threatening way.

That said, horses are pretty damned big, so there should be no way to "accidentaly" shoot one.

And yes, horses can break fences easy as can be. My mom had them my whole life up until about five or six years ago. My brother's knothead gelding kept busting out, and I damn near shot the bastard and left him laying on the road (the horse, not my brother). Horses can be gentle as can be, or a fucking dickhead.

I have zero use for the hayburning shitters any more. Unless the world ends and that's the best means of travel, they can stay far away from me.

Obviously these situations are all hypothetical. Yes, I plan to introduce myself and even invite the neighbors to shoot on the land as well. The neighbor south is really good people and probably the type of people you want as neighbor. The one north is the one with the horses. I've heard he's good people too but just doesn't care about fencing up when he's been confronted about it before.

Everything I've read about Texas being open range is in regards to not having to fence up towards the street, highway, county road, etc. Meaning it's okay for the animals to go into the road. If traffic runs over it, the driver is responsible. I haven't seen much about open range in regards to neighbors. I have to keep digging some more.

No, I will not shoot the horses lol. Yes if I'm ever shooting, I will be situationally aware. I know I am responsible for every single one of my bullets that leaves my muzzle.

By the way, anybody know where they have T-posts and barbed wire rolls for cheap lol.

Open range basically means if you own property and it’s not fenced off, it’s open to anyone with adjoining open land to graze their livestock on, or open to “free grazing”. Goes both ways too. You can allow your livestock to graze the land you adjoin that’s not fenced off, but that’s where the established local ranches kinda start getting their hackles up.

This is why it would be the landowners responsibility to fence other people’s livestock out if so desired.

With a few exceptions, Texas is an open range state. In general, it is on the owner of the property to keep unwanted livestock off of his land.
