what happened to "a 308 can not and will not stabilize past 800" all I have ever heard is how it will start tumbling

Excellent post and incredible pictures. Thanks for taking the time to post them here! Just goes to show that the .308 is still a viable long range round. Is this a regular shooting spot that you use? Hmmm, how far away from "civilization" is this?

I know no other place on earth like this place. Probibly the smallest most unknown place in all of canada if not north america. I don't live there anymore but my parents do and I visit sometimes. Definetly a shooters paradise.

Re: .308 to 1000, 1178, 1385, 1650 and 1950 meters.

OK enough of this LR 308 stuff........... Lets talk about them big mossy horned Whitetails you have up there now!

Re: .308 to 1000, 1178, 1385, 1650 and 1950 meters.

Nice shooting.
Nice Range.
Nice Rifle.

Need any shooting buddies? lol.

Just goes to prove that a lot of the "conventions" are wrong.

Re: .308 to 1000, 1178, 1385, 1650 and 1950 meters.

Wow that's so awesome! I wish I had that kind of place to shoot! I would have steel everywhere, I would have some sort of floating target in some shallow water that's anchored, that would be cool!

I wish I could shoot past 300 yards. Unfortunately I do not have access..

Re: .308 to 1000, 1178, 1385, 1650 and 1950 meters.

Awesome range. I wonder if something similar can be found here in Arizona.

Re: .308 to 1000, 1178, 1385, 1650 and 1950 meters.

One of the coolest threads I have read on this site. Looks like anybody that bashes the .308 and not having a $5000 rifle to be truly accurate can go eat a big bag full of dicks. Awesome shooting by the way.

Re: .308 to 1000, 1178, 1385, 1650 and 1950 meters.

Thanks A lot of people could probibly do the same if they were shooting in a place like this.

Re: .308 to 1000, 1178, 1385, 1650 and 1950 meters.

Thanks! fun post. I wonder at what range they begin to tumble. Seems like at 1950 you were getting pretty consistent elevation calls so i'm guessing they were just beginning that tumble you were seeing. Would have been interesting to see if you would have had more or less success in the subsonic ranges with a secant ogive bullet.

The 178 Hornady BTHP have a secant ogive. I loaded the 178 AMAX the 175 SMK and the 178 BTHP exactly the same, The 178 AMAX and 175 SMK shoot almost the same but i never did try a ladder test or anything with a 178 BTHP.

Big mistake because when i took the same load i used to hit a target at 1650 and 1950 meters to an F class match they grouped terrible at 1000 yards.

Re: .308 to 1000, 1178, 1385, 1650 and 1950 meters.

'and people said I was full of shit when I said I regularly get onto paper at 1300yrds with my .308, you took it to the next level and then some.

For whatever reason, people are convinced that the .308 maxes out around 800yrds.

Here's to proving them wrong.
Good job!

Re: .308 to 1000, 1178, 1385, 1650 and 1950 meters.

Super cool range and truely awesome to hit each target in 5 shot or less at this range with a 308.

Re: .308 to 1000, 1178, 1385, 1650 and 1950 meters.

Doesn't everyone have a range like this in their back yard?

Very Cool, thanks for sharing

That is some fine shooting. Also your 700 police has a 1 in 12 twist?

Great shooting. Beautiful range. Thanks for sharing.

Re: .308 to 1000, 1178, 1385, 1650 and 1950 meters.

Very good report. 1950 is a long ways away but it looks like you did pretty well...and with a factory 308. Great pics too.

Seriously? Have you ever been out in the desert? There are plenty of places you could stretch it out, you just have to get off of the beaten path.

Re: .308 to 1000, 1178, 1385, 1650 and 1950 meters.

Knowing how satisfying a hit at 1000m is, I´m fond there are people pushing the boundaries ever further. Also, I don´t think I´ll NEED a different caliber for some time, really...

Awsome writeup. Much appreciated report. This thread should be stickied.

Just joined, I amazed! Just finished building up a .308 SPS, can't wait to try it out, thanks for the awesome post!

Nice pics and awesome shooting

Every time I see this thread I smile, I love the .308 and think it is underrated. I can't wait to hit that 1k yard shot and beyond. My rifle is finally together, and I am starting to make my hand loads soon. It won't be long now. :)

Well damn, I just realized that when we switched over to the new forum set up my post count dropped by like 200. Oh well I guess. It has happened to others as well.

Outstanding post. Using water and a long flight time to see your fall of shot is about as perfect as it can be.
Have you determined at what distance the bullet has gone subsonic?
Was there a sudden increase in flight time?
Thank for your post.

Great shooting ... the butt plugs at my LGS would all say this can't be done with a .308, they would go on to tell you how they can do it with a 5.56 ?!

Boooolsheet.... I shot my FN to 1300 yards this summer. It's good to 1200 down to about 40 degrees.
