Alright, I have this idea, the possibilities to have, hunt, and own a 338LM chambered rifle in Sweden is about to be closed, and we are talking real soon, or rather getting one, sine having one on a permitt will surely keep it safe, that is the background,
so that stated, what actions would you all suggest based on availabilty and so on. I have been looking hard at the BAT, Borden and Barnard actions, owning today a Pierce, does any one know if he will make one large enough to fit the 338LM case?
I know that there are other rounds like the 338NM, 338 EDGE and so on however I have aquired some 200 Lapua cases and do not wish to part with them and I like the name, good justification ?! Any way, last part of it all, are there any actions at hand? Looking around on different sites, there is very little that suggests that I might get my little hands on a action any time soon.

Well still the same, suggestions, ideas, likes and dislikes? /CHris

Mine is built on a Stiller TAC 338, and I really like it. The Surgeon is great also, as in heavier duty, but I couldn't justify the price difference at the time. All of these actions are usually built to order. Most go to gunsmiths that build on them, and the private guy like you and me. Best of luck.

Thanks STR, i did take a look at the Stiller prior to my post above, they look good, like most costum actions, could you please humour me a bit and give me a bit of the specs on your rifle. Best regards Chris

Stiller TAC338
Bartlein #17 contour, 27 inches with an APA fat bastard brake. APA bottom metal. Timney Trigger. McMillan A4. I can post pics from another post if you like later.

Stiller here also. TAC338
22" Shilen Barrel, JP break, huber trigger, mcmillian A3 stock, shooting 300gr smk's.

FOr the money its tough to beat a SPF action. Plenty robust for my needs, which isnt benchrest. From your list of actions, BR is prob what you will be using it for, and if thats the case, any of your choices would be good.

Regards,
DT

What about a TRG42? Or AI AWSM?

Custom action, Id choose a Badger Ordnance M2008.

Thank you all for your input, the major use here in Sweden will be wild boar stand hunting/field stalking and some steel shooting, I know that the actions that I suggested would suggest othervise, as in BR use however that is not the case.

TRG42 are way overpriced here, I can build a rifle a lot cheaper than buying one stock bone TRG, as for the AI/ AIX or other versions of that nature, they are about to become off-limits for civilians like me. That all brings me back to the suggestions above, I will try to see if there are any actions available in Åland, a great little Island nation, semi-detached to Finland, they have far better gun laws then what we do and a lot more play things.

Well I really like the suggested set ups above however I do belive that I will go with about a 25-ish inch barrel with a rather aggressive taper to it, that way I can get more weight centered around the action and scope and a little less at the muzzle.

Any one run a can on there big boomer, I am looking at the largest of the ASE-UTRA cans that might just fit the bill, in real life, the rifle will be shot once, max tvice and then a long pause or it´s just hunt over, in so I think that any and all issues with mirage can be dealt with. I sure am glad that the forum is up and running again. /Chris

Just finishing a 338 Lapua, on a big Surgeon, Bartlein barrel, Jewel trigger.

CUrrently in an old Manners stock I had laying around, but have a Tooley MBR inbound.

And an AWC Thundertrap for it, going to try it as a test bed for a LR BR rifle.

Just curious; what does a TRG cost over there? I bought one a few months ago and thought it was a bargain compared to having one built......about 1/2 price. For cans, the Titan QD has been great though getting the muzzle brake/adapter is a pain in the a$$. AAC needs to support their product a little better in this respect. If you get a different caliber I'll buy your 338LM brass ;)

A New TRG 42 338LM green is 6 200 usd in store here, a black is about 4 500 usd, I would guess that I can build a costum for less than that. The idea of looking for a 550 Magnum action is good, however that choice would make finding aftermarket parts far more difficult, trigger/stock options, I will have to make upp my mind in the near future. Best regards Chris
