So after much debate and what was left over with funding I've decided to go with the Vortex Viper PST 6-24x50 for my LR rifle build. A couple of questions if you don't mind:

I'm going with a Stiller Precision TAC30 action with the 20MOA base on it

1. What height of rings should I be looking at? I've never had to deicide on height before?

2. With the 20MOA base and the 65MOA of adjustment, will that be enough for 1000 yard shooting? I realize that most scopes are in the middle of that so really you only have 32MOA up and down.

For ring height I would see if you can look to see how any friends ring heights are in comparison. With a 20 moa base, the rear of the scope is going to be elevated, so unless you need them, I wouldn't be looking to get 'high' rings. Start with medium rings.

The travel and 20 moa base will give you plenty of elevation to get to 1k with a .308. More easily with a faster round.

I went with mediums (Seekins) because I've got a 1" barrel. Probably could have gotten by with lows but I wouldn't have cleared the rail at the back of the scope with the power ring. There is a formula in the Scope in the optics section that will help a lot with choosing.
Same scope and 20 moa base I run out of adjustment at 1200-1300 range however still have enough stadia to make it on hold over.

I have that same rig, vortex on a Tac 30. I'll check my ring height. 20 MOA base will give you 52 moa up and 12 moa down. Takes about 42 moa to get to 1000

Waste_knot,

Can you give him bell diameter and scope length along with scope set for proper eye relief? Having the exact action he does will give him a pretty good rundown of where the scope needs to end up. Also, do you move the scope back? keep it in the middle pretty much? or move it as far forward as you can get it?

BW,

Take note of what Waste_knot has and it will give you a good idea (it'll take some math) as to whether or not you need medium or tall rings. I said medium without even thinking what body type you have. If you have a tall face, you'll certainly want to go up one size in ring height.

Hmm this is the setup I was planning to go with as well. I figured low rings would be fine so im curious to hear as well.

Stiller thriller with a Vortex

Here's the position of my PST. The eye releif works well for 13.5 LOP and I'm 6'. Because the AX handguard does not taper down or away the spacing is a little tight at the bell end. The sunshade screws on without any problems you just cant get the stock lens cover on there without shaving it. I had a #3 Varmit contour with an A5 with plenty of clearence. This scope is 2" above the centerline with medium rings.

I just ordered one of these in FFP w/ MOA (all my hunting rifles are MOA so I decided not to change so I'll have only one approach working for me) for my Rem 700 SPS-V, currently glass-bedded in a B&C A5. I'm going to be ordering Seekins rail and med. high rings for this rifle but will at least get out to a few hundred yard with my Leupy STD bases and med. 30mm rings.

This rifle has been a pretty good first precision rifle for an on-the-cheap starting point:

and, as I gather some experience with some different glass (I have been using a Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40 w/ RapidZ600 reticle), it will help me sort out where I want to go and how much I want to step up. I hope I won't feel compelled to go to a $5k rifle, $3k glass, etc, etc (LOL...with all you youngsters picking up my medicare and SS, who knows where I'll end up).

How have the UTG rings held up? Was thinking I might buy a few pairs in different heights so I can see what fits my build best and just hold on to the rest...never hurts to have extras on hand. At the price I can find those for, it's not much of a drain on the bank account.

I hope you guys have better luck than me... 3 weeks ago I bought a brand new Viper Pst 6-24x50, mounted it one my AR, took it to the range for my first time ever shooting this rifle and to zero it. After being at the range for 10 mins and not firing one round down range I found the side parallax was not working and just spinning... so back it went to vortex, and I just received it again "fixed" under their VIP lifetime warranty this past thursday... now it seems to work, however it screeches like a dieing rabbit as soon as you begin to operate it.... again not one round fired, as you can imagine I am pretty pleased with their product

Thanks for the pics. I belive the medium rings will work well for me then.

My delivery date for this scope is March 20. Will post range report as soon as possible thereafter.

Am using existing Leupold STD bases with medium rings while figuring out Seekins Precision 20 MOA Pic rail and rings. Stay tuned for results, and,

Best regards,

FH

That sucks man. I've had great luck with this scope so far...knock on wood.

I received my scope yesterday, mounted it and bore sighted it and took it to the range today. First shot at 50 yards, 4" high and centered (I had worked on the Leupy STD bases to get windage right through set screw adjustments while keeping the scope set at mechanical zero and, in fact, lucked out). Got sighted in, dead nuts on, at 100 yards in 12 shots.

Reactions:

1. This is a wonderful scope at the price point...and everything worked as advertised...perfectly.
2. While the scope goes to 24x, I found that staying below 20x at 100 yards was most conducive to accuracy
3. I let several of the RSOs shoot with it...I think I sold at least 2 on getting a Viper PST 6-24x50
4. I used Leupy STD bases and 30mm medium rings on a Rem 700 SPS-Varmint profile bull barrel. With my B&C A5 stock I was able to obtain ideal positioning and cheek weld with that set-up.
5. This base/rings combo will do well out to about 800 yards from what I read. I'm planning on getting some Seekins rings with a 20 MOA Picatinny rail base when I'm ready to go out to 1k

In all, I couldn't be more delighted with this rifle/scope setup. I've got a bit under $2k into the rifle (700 SPS-V, B&C A5 stock, free-floated and glass-bedded, Leupy STD bases and medium rings, Viper PST6-24x50 scope) and it performs like a champ. While I know I can improve on this set-up, it is already proving to be a great first precision target rifle. I also got some great performance out of my Win Mod 70 EW in 7mm Rem Mag today...it really did well with 150gr SMKs and had me ready to consider an FNH SPR for my next precision rifle although I'm leaning toward a Sako TRG. Luckily, the dems and Pres. Obambamobammaramma aren't coming for our bolt action rifles just yet.
