I've done some looking and most of the problem is with hornady brass. It's a little too soft. Riflehas 50 rds down the tube, the first 3/4 of the bolt lift is easy, last 1/4 not good. Tried very mild reloads, 280gr Barnes lrx, 88 gr of h1000. Stillsticks80% of thetime. Same with black hills, remington factory. Please help...

Re: savage 110 fcp .338 lapua sticky bolt

sounds more like you're mistaking the natural Savage bolt lift as a sticky bolt... but why not send it in/ take to a gunsmith to get headspace and all checked out?

Re: savage 110 fcp .338 lapua sticky bolt

It's not "normal". Some stick to the point where the extractor slips off the back of the case and the case has to be removed with a rod. The gun is on its way back to savage...

Re: savage 110 fcp .338 lapua sticky bolt

barrett you are rite on it being not normal. i have heard about this problem many many times with the 338LM. the hornady brass IS to soft. but i have also heard of the chamber itself being gaulded or having chatter marks in it from other guys with the same rifle. good choice on sending it back. i swear i hear about this atleast once a week with the 338. i have the 110ba in 300wm and have never had a problem with almost 3-400 rounds down the tube. it cycles every ammo i have ever ran in it and cycles very smoothly.

Re: savage 110 fcp .338 lapua sticky bolt

It is not the gun its Hornady.

It is absolutely the Hornady brass. I have a Sav 110 BA and have shot Black Hills, Lapua, Federal, Hornady, etc. The only rounds that caused a sticky bolt were the Hornady. I also occasionally shoot with other guys with the same gun. I warned one of them about the Hornady brass. His bolt stuck so bad he had to hammer the bolt open. The brass is too soft. I will not use it even for reloads.

The Federal Match is great ammo and uses Lapua brass - about the best brass I know of.

Re: savage 110 fcp .338 lapua sticky bolt

That's the thing. It does it with ALL kinds of brass. Lapua, black hills, and hornady. Only about 30% on the other two, and every time on the hornady.

Re: savage 110 fcp .338 lapua sticky bolt

yes have heard this many many times as i said before good call on sending it back. there are a few other threads on here about this same problem with many types of brass. at the same rate patriot is right about the shitty hornady brass in the 338LM. on the other hand i shoot hornady out of my 110ba in .300wm with no issues at all. seems like there are lemons out there with some production problems. good luck man and let us know the end result when you get it back.

Re: savage 110 fcp .338 lapua sticky bolt

Man these threads make me nervous. I recently got a 110 in .338 LM but haven't shot it yet, as I promptly ordered a McMillan stock and sold the HSP (thought it would take longer to sell than a day). Sure hope it shoots right when that McMillan comes in! Only planning on putting Lapua brass through it, hope that is enough.

edit:**Still relevant but posted in the wrong thread, thought this was the one where the guy's gun wasn't shooting right at all that's a few below this. Proves my point though, and causes me to sweat a little!**

I just took my 110ba to range on Sat for its first outing. 2nd round fired, which was HSM 300gr factory, bolt stuck and the brass failed to extract. Once I got the bolt open, which I did by hand, I noticed that the bolt had actually bent near the bolt handle. I heard about the problem with Hornady ammo and hence I only bought black hills and HSM. The gun is boxed and ready to go back to Savage.

That's why I used only lapua brass in my 110 FCP. Never had any issues... Although the first one I got had a bent barrel and had to have the rifle replaced. I wouldn't trust Savage's quality control!

It's a headspace issue. It's too tight. Had a 110ba. Only way to avoid a tight bolt was super low charges with lapua brass.
I didn't hear anything about the headspace issue until after i sold it. But readjusting the headspace has fixed several savage owners tight bolt problems.
I feel for you. I bought an aluminum rod just to punch bras out at the range when (not if) it got stuck.
Send it in if you want, but i bet you or a local gunsmith can fix your problem.

That's really useful info. I'm going to send mine in as I think it needs a new bolt but when I get it back I will take it a local gunsmith for him to check the headspace. Thanks

you guys made my decision of savage vs remmy ez a few years back..good luck getting your rifle running properly brother

If you send it in tell them why the bolt bent and that the stuck bolt issue is a common issue for savages in 338lm. Of course they'll say they've never heard of any such problems. Just say whatever, check the headspace. It might do you good to send them a few of your rounds, too. I think all they use is hornady 215gr ammo. The heavier bullets tend to be the ones that build up enough case pursue to cause this problem, not the lighter ones.

I have a 110BA in 308 ~ Have a LA on order, actually for a 300wm/338lm, also have the barrels coming in 3-4 months as well...Can't wait!

First thing I did was send my rifle to the local smith...there were some issues but, I also completely replaced my bolt...PTG does very good bolts + Heads.

My suggestion to all of you, to save a few months, is to order a new bolt body + Bolt head from PTG...Then take it to the gunsmith. Spending $100 or $200 to circumvent 1-2 months of being without my rifle, is worth it, IMO.

Guarantee your issues are head-spacing and bolt face tolerances.

I also had an issue of the feed ramp not being polished, at all...so, gunsmith took care of that as well.

Now, it's a solid 1/2 or better shooter from 100 and I couldn't be happier.

Savage customer service said not to send any live rounds. I put a detailed description with the rifle. How long was the turnaround for anyone else who sent their rifle back to Savage? If its months then I may just replace the bolt with a PTG bolt and take it to a gunsmith to check the headspace.

IMO if it was the gun, itself; send it back...But, if it's just the bolt, why bother?

Shoot an order into PTG and just go after-market IMHO. The tolerances on the stock bolt are a pretty known issue.

Replacing your bolt head it actually really easy and replacing the bolt body is incredibly easy, as well.

Just my 2c.

I agree, but its up to the OP to determine if its feasible to do that.

Besides go, no go guages, what else would I need? I guess a barrel wrench but anything else? The gun was picked up today but I sure would like to check and adjust it if need be. Thanks for all the help and advice.

Just shot my savage today. There were no bolt problems. Got my ammo from bob beck at extreme outer limits. I was shooting 300 grain berger elite hunter hybrid with lapua brass. Awesome ammo as it gave me half inch group at 100 . Will take it on out farther next outing. Bob will go the extra mile to make sure he gets it right
