I am in the market for a new/used rifle in .308 it will be used for plinking, deer hunting some, and maybe a little long range shooting (for fun). This is my problem I would love to own a GA rock ect but I can't spend 3k+ on this rifle my budget is around $1500-2000 can you guys help me with some choices that fit my budget. I want the look of the sniper set-up 20"-24" heavy barrel my budget does not include a scope as I have that already...Thanks for any and all suggestions/help.

You really can not go wrong with a Remington 700. The factory stock is a P.O.S. so spend some time looking at the stocks on the market. This forum has a ton of reviews on the different models that are popular. If you go this route you still have a few bucks left to pick up rings, base, ammo. This will get you a rig that will reach out a long way. With the stocks though if your looking to hunt maybe pick up a Houge. They can be found for cheap. Light weight to carry in the woods (unless you prefer to use the power window as an elevation adjustment while deer hunting) then the bigger tactical stocks are just fine. Hope this helps.

do a build off of a stevens action. you can get a stevens 200 for really cheap and do a build with a millet 4-16x50 scope and still meet your budget. i built my wifes for 950 bucks but she is using a bushnell 10x40 scope since she only shoots out to 300 yards.

plenty of info ou there on stevens 200 builds.

So I would be fine with a LTR or the Savage 10 both will work for what I'm wanting? Would I have to change the stock on the LTR?...Any others I should look at is the GAP worth the extra coin for what I'm wanting to do?

My vote, remington700 sps aac-sd. Lose the crap stock and go bell and carlson or manners. Get badger bottum metal and the big chubby muzzle break. All might peak at the $2000. You could find some deals here on the stock for a good price. That could save some money for ammo.

I prefer Tikka for hunting. They are very accurate, but I would replace the stock for something more to your liking. I am not familiar with good replacements for it though.

I went this route when I first started.

Remington 700 5r milspec, 308 24inch barrel. Currently 1200ish online, may have to back order. It comes with a pretty good H&S Precision (correct me if its a B&C)
I would suggest getting an aftermarket trigger as the factory one is ok but nothing great.

With a 1500 - 2000k budget you might even be able to find a Manners or AICS used here on the Hide. Check the for sale section and put up a Want To Buy thread with items you are looking for.

I would also reccomend an FN SPR. They are out of the box tack drivers with no modifications needed and no build time. You may want to bed it if you get an model that isn't bedded, but thats about it. My factory SPR A5M came with a 1/4 MOA test target and shoots better than I do.

I have a Winchester M70 stealth II and it shoots amazing right outta the box. It might be a little too heavy for hunting though. An FN spr would be a great choice too

you should check out lonewolfUSMC's budget precision build. gerat write up here

Check out his YT page as well. Don't bother with an LTR. Just buy an SPS tactical and find a used HS precision or Bell & Carlson stock for it. You might also want to invest in a mag system right away. The internal mags on stock remingtons don't work very well.
