A few weeks back, I took my new Akita (Sayo) for her first hunt on my friends ranch. Sayo is about 2 years old, had almost no previous training, but learns fast.

Originally, we were looking for hogs. But after a while it became obvious none of the tracks or rooting was very fresh. While we were working our way back towards the ranch yard, Sayo stopped, turned east, and stood up on her hind legs for a better view. I guess that's how this dog points. After a few seconds, this coyote bust from cover about 50 yards from us and took off running.

Ranch rules: Kill any coyote you get a chance. I can always come back for more pigs as long as I do.

I'm not very pleased with the shot, since it ruined a nice pelt. But still, it was a standing unsupported shot on a fast-running yote.

Oh - The rifle was a Tikka T3 Lite shooting 150gn .308 Barns Triple shock. (I live right in the middle of condor country.)

Sayo's decided she likes hunting!

An Akita for a 'yote dog......fuck it why not! That's a pretty cool story. They make needle/ thread for those less than ideal shots.

Cheers,
Breeze

Yeah...you don't really hear much about Akitas used for hunting. But they got great noses, and good ears. Once they get the idea, they do pretty well at it. My last Akita was scared of gunfire. But she'd tolerate it if she knew we were after the pigs she'd found for us.

My lab mix hates the gun shots. Since I got the cans and a pocket full of beggin' strips and she learned to love gunfire! Well at least, suppressed gun fire anyway! Akita's have cool look about them. Cool that you got a hunting dog outta the deal.

Cheers,
Breeze
