Hello everyone,

I am relatively new to posting on snipershide, but i have been a member for a while. I like reading every ones opinions on things. I am having a real tough time deciding what optic to put on my new sr 15 mod 1. I know i want something that has the capabilities of reaching out to about 400m. My budget is about 1000 and under new or used. I saw this Leupold VXR patrol scope and it really has the magnification im looking for, im just not sure if there is something better out there or if anyone had opinions on this optic. Thanks and I look forward to your responses.

I was seriously considering it for my AR. I decided on the Vortex 1-4 PST because I like the reticle better and I know and love the Vortex PST scopes. Sorry, I cannot directly compare the two; I just know I love mine. You probably wouldn't go wrong with either. And don't worry about the 1x vs 1.25x on the low end; the near field still distorts on a "1x" scope from what a red dot would be anyway. It's only far field the scope is a true 1x and shows like a red dot. Except with much superior reticle and handling :D. You won't have an issue acquiring nearby targets with either, anyway.

I have the 3x9 patrol on an AR10. The patrol series are nice scopes. Nice glass.

I have the 1.25-4 VX-R Patrol, it is a nice scope for the money. The MIL/MIL is a big plus, the firedot can be turned on or off, some people like it some don't but you have the option. 1.25 power is pretty low for cqb plus the firedot makes a nice combo. The mil reticle is a little different as each mildot is worth 2.5 mils, but it is more usable than the ACOG I had on my M4 before. Even with an expensive mount you will still be under $1K. The only other scope I can compare it to in the 1-4 range, is the 1-4 Steiner ($1900) and I must say while the Steiner glass is way better I do not like the reticle compared to the Leupold. I would not hesitate on the Leupold its a great little package especially for an M4.

Thanks a lot guys this is really helpful. Can anyone tell me how this compares to the vortex viper 1-4? I think i have narrowed it down to these 2 optics. Any other insight would be greatly appreciated.

Have a patrol 1.25-4 on a S&W 15-22, nice and light scope with very decient glass and the red dot is visable in the bright sun. For comparison have a vortex razor 1-6 that costs about 3 times as much, the glass is a bit better the field of view is wider and and the extra power is nicer , but it also weights twice as much. For their purposes i am happy with both of em. Maybe another scope you may want to consider if you are willing to spend about $1,000 would be the SWFA 1-6, they are becoming available now.

I have been trying out the leupold scope have had it on for some time now and definatly say it's a keeper. Great price point for a very good scope. Used it a few months ago on a military 300 meter pop up range was a outstanding piece of kit will be buying another one for the other Ar soon

I have the VXR Patrol 1.25-4 on my 300 blkout and love it. 400 meters is not an issue at all.

I had one but sold it, the crosshairs took up too much of the target at 100 yards on 4x for my taste, but other than that it was a quality product.

I agree with trying to get a 1-6 scope, sometimes 4X is not enough for me. For a .223 M4 platform 4X is pretty much standard but a 6X would definitely be an upgrade. For the price the VX-R is a great scope, when I bought it all the 1-8's and 1-6's barely existed. If I were buying another optic like this I would definitely look for a 6X scope. 30Hart is correct the reticle is thick but that's what makes it easy to see on low power if not using the firedot.
