I have a Kifaru Tailgunner1 on an Omni belt with shoulder straps. I want someone who can do work designed to hold up as well and look as clean as the original Tailgunner1 bag, but modified slightly so that I can access the rear pouch(es) while wearing the pack. It needs to attach to the Omni belt and interface with the shoulder straps like the original kifaru, which is a pretty straight forward arrangement using common hardware.

Who does good work on small custom sewing projects? Not just who is willing to do it, but who have you guys used and had good results?

I emailed Zulu and EGL, but never heard from Zulu and EGL responds so cryptically that I have to send followup messages just to understand the original...to which they don't respond. Not being an industry insider OR a prior owner of EGL gear, acronyms for EGL designs that aren't defined either by his website OR google leave me completely at sea.

I can provide size specs and the original Tailgunner for copying the shoulder strap/Omni interface, or the entire rig.
The original design carries weight VERY well, so a simple clone of the attachment system with modified pouch or pouches is all I need.

Kifaru doesn't do custom work, I already checked.

Thanks for the help!

Recommend you try the folks at Vel-Tye LLC
- Vel-Tye Home of the "Hugger" - Vel-Tye LLC

They have done some custom work on tactical nylon projects for me that I have been very happy with. Also, they are easy to work with and I always find their prices very fair. They do contract work for various LEO and Mil organizations as well as custom work for individuals. They are enjoying a growth spirt right now, so not sure about their turnaround time currently, but I have always found them to be very responsive and timely. If I give them a project deadline up front that they agree to, they have never failed to deliver on time.

Best of luck and drop me an email if you have any questions or let me know how things work out, good or bad.

Check out Sunrise Tactical In sunny side Washington. His name is Scott I use several of his products and the are clean and solid.

Another for Sunrise Tactical, I shot a match this past weekend and was paired with Scott, I showed him some gear that I borrowed that another small independent sewer had worked on. Scott complemented the work in particular thes excellent stitching. I have several of Scotts products and they are well made and well thought out. He can be reached here on the Hide at SScott

BTW... Sunrise looks to sell an excellent ammo wallet. I was going to get a Red Tac Ammo card, but I like the closed design. Very nice.

What is it you want to put in these compartments that you can get to while wearing the rig? If you just want to be able to reach back and be able to get into the bag the simple solution would be to build it like an old school butt pack but use fasted buckles instead of friction adapters on the 2 cinch straps.

Get with Steve over at
N.O.H. Tactical

He builds some serious bombproof gear and has done some excellent mods on my gear.
Recommend highly.

Water, ammo cards for topping off mags (for the runNgun I usually take 4 30rd pmags, so with 3 AW 10rd mags I'm going to be topping off mags while on the move) varmint caller when hunting, cobra netting, SuperTac light for calling after dark, etc.

Sounds like you need a camel back for the water and a micro chest rig to carry the ammo cards and other items. In fact, you could probably ditch your current rig and go with a micro chest rig set up with a hydro carrier on your back as part of the harness. You would be able to reach all your kit and have access to water without having to take anything off. If you want to stick with the suspenders, the COMA system I showed you in the other thread with a hydro carrier and not the backpack would probably work.

If you want to still have something made, you can also try John over at OSOE (Original S.O.E. Gear). He has done custom one off things for me in the past and his stuff is top shelf.

Here is one with the hydro carrier on it. The micro chest rig can be rigged with the pockets you want on it and doesnt have to look like the one pictured.

Yes, a chest rig and hydration carrier would work - the last two times I've done the Pecos Run and Gun it was with a TAG Gladiator, which did fine except it tended to flop and was heavier than I needed. It's only 6.5 miles or so, and I don't really need a hydration carrier to do it. In addition, the hunts I go on weekly vary from 4.1 miles to 8.3 miles, still not really needing more than a Nalgene bottle for water. I don't want to have to put on a chest rig for my routine hikes with a rifle, so I'm trying to rig something less "tactical" and more practical/versatile. If I end up running into/talking to the landowner or lease hunter on whatever place I'm doing hog/coyote mitigation, I also don't want to give the impression I'm trying to look all ninja. ;-)

As for the OSOE stuff, I've actually had one of the Micro Shotgun rigs, which was a really sweet little setup. Love that design, and John does do good work. He sometimes has an impressive lead time, though.

Papa Zero Three, your posts are full of good info - I appreciate your time.

Strife, if I knew a master rigger, I would be bangin on his door! :)

In that case I'd say go with a Mountain Smith Tour pack or similar large fanny pack that can hold a couple of Nalgene bottles on the side. I think they have a model that has shoulder straps that you can add on to it when carrying a heavy load. You can spin that to your front to access it and it doesn't look tactical.

You also might want to look at some of the photographer waist packs as they have compartments and lens pockets that can hold bottles of water and other items. Another thought, photographer and or fly fisherman vests have a lot of pockets in them, don't look tactical and you may have one laying around already.

Sunrise tactical is wonderful, Scott is the man, have several of his works, super nice

Anyone here on the eastern side of the U.S? Looking for a custom rigger shop to re engineer a large Alice pack with waterproof nylon and pouches for a jungle environment. FT Bragg has F*ck-all anymore. General Jacko's only does pouch attachments and minor alterations. It seems the same everywhere else I look.

Macleod, How extensive are you talking about ? Is it re-design from scratch or simply add waterproof liner to the existing ruck? Did you talk to Willie, the old black guy at gen Jackson? If willie passed on it, it's probably for a reason. You can also try the little sew/ alteration shop next door to gen Jackson, they will do some sewing on kit depending on what you want done.

If what you want is a redesigned item, I would suggest you drop Zulu nylon gear an email, he's in Illinois, and see if he can sort you out.

I'd also tell you to stop by grey group training and talk to Eric or Matt to see who they recommend locally (or near by)that can handle your needs.

Yea mate. Willie said he used to do them years back but no longer. Yea I know Eric and matt (take the piss at their expense quite a bit--good lads) those knobs would think it was a cool idea but they just sell kit to my knowledge. I'll phone the fella in Illinois and see what he suggests. Cheers. Thanks for the direction. Really looking at taking a large alice and rebuilding it in waterproof DPM, maybe use an old waterproof basha as the material. And add extra pouches for food and ammo on the outside. Cheers mate

Pick matt and erics brains for WHO they know that could provide you that service. GG has had their hand in dealing with sewing facilities in the past and should know someone they could recommend for the job.
