Noob scope question - Savage BTVS

Hey fellas,

I'm looking at upgrading the scope on my Savage BTVS. At the moment im shooting at 50 yards with a bottom end Bushnell scope, i think the magnification is 3-9x 40mm. I havent got the best eyes and im finding i have to squint to shoot. I'm wondering what sort of magnification i should be after in order to shoot in between 50 and 200 yards. I've heard good things about the Mueller Optics' APV 4.5-14x40. Anyone want to give me their opininion? Cheers in advance.

My choice after a month's worth of research,
was the Mueller 8-32x44mm side focus, target dot reticle.
It was the best optic for the amount I was willing to spend.
Very fine crosshairs and target dot allow for accurate shot placement.
Not a scope for hunting, but more than adequate for punching paper.
I use it at distances ranging from 15 to 200 yards with no problems.
It's not a Leupold or Weaver, but it gets the job done
within the constraints of my budget. Here it is,
sitting on my CZ 455 American Lilja 22lr.

My BTV wears a Simmons WTC 6.5-20x50 w/ AO. I can focus down to 10 or 15 feet, and out to forever.

I just ordered me one for my new 93R17GV, Midway is blowing them out for $109.99 w/free shipping. There are 270 reviews and of those 233 are 5 stars, there's got to be something there. For the price I'll take a chance, I really don't see how I can loose, worse case it's not very good and I sell it for a $30 or $40 loss.

I have Leupold vari x 3 4.5x14 it works great in those distance. If you are squinting adjust the reticle to clear the crosshairs up.

but every Mueller I've seen had been a pile of crap.
Seen ocular housings break being carried in a bag...turrets that don't track
...sloppily labeled turrets...spongy turrets.

I FLAT OUT DON'T RECOMMENDED THEM.

I've gotta guess that the ones I was allowed to try out
must not have been Monday or Friday assembled scopes.
Or, maybe, it's because here in Florida we don't get those sub-zero days
where ice-heave affects the mechanical devices we use.

Seriously, if I had received a scope with the problems you describe,
I'd of sent it back immediately for a refund. Lucky for me, QC on the
the assembly line the day mine was put together, was doing their job.
Turrets are snug, no slop, very perceptible clicks, holds zero,
returns to previously determined settings each time. Like I said,
it's no Weaver or Leupold, but for the price it's a better scope than I need.
Certainly not going to put an optic on a production rifle, that cost's
more than the rifle is worth. Now if I was a a competitive shooter
where I was using a custom benchrest rifle that was worth more than my truck,
and I was putting in more than 3 hours a week at the range,
then a high end scope makes sense. But for just another interested amateur,
the Mueller 8-32x44 does everything I need, from 15 yards to 200 yards,
without emptying my wallet, or giving me a coronary if I ding it.

I shoot with Nightforce pretty much exclusively now on my center fire rifles, but recently got into rimmfire and decided to give what I considered low end optics a try. I purchased the mueller in question above (8x32x44 target) and have been pleasantly surprised. I read all the negative comments about eye relief at high magnification and was skeptical about the purchase but figured I could sell it quickly if I did not like it as they sell like hotcakes on the secondary market. I have found that for the money I paid $232.00 for it it's hard to beat. I am not doubting dfooskings experience as he is a regular here and always has posted what I consider to be very good information. I however have had nothing but good luck with mine. The glass is clear side parallax adjustment is great and turrets are tight and precise. It is definitely not my nightforce scopes by any means but a quality optic in that price point and worth every bit of what I paid for it. It has made me reconsider my previous view on what I considered low end optics. See for yourself and if you don't like it post it for sale I would consider buying it from you!

I have the same rife. Check out Lowlights review of the Weaver tac Grand Slam 3-10x40. Good glass, light weight, compact, Mill/Mill. Whats not to love!
I just came back from the range, and have no problem going out to 200 yds with it! I got mine for $250.
Good luck!

There is one right now in the for sale section for $250.

I put the BSA 4-14 FFP mil/mil scope on my Savage MKII. I've shot it a few time and so far I like it. I've dialed it to 300 meters and back. Seems to track well and I like the reticle for holding off in the wind.
