This is my first series of ladder tests. I feel like I got some good info from it. It appears that this thing doesn't care what you feed it. It just loves to eat. This is at 300 yds. I am thinking that 2-4 is where I need to focus. From about 4 up there was some cratering in the primers but no flattening primers. Please let me know what you think.

five thru seven look pretty good to me too. Please tell us what powder charges were in those three rounds.
It could very well be that what you think is a pressure sign is just a firing pin hole in the bolt that is a little over size. That is pretty common in the R700 these days.

44.1, 44.4, 44.7. That's what I thought about the cratering too. There weren't any other signs of pressure. If it is just an over sized FP hole would it not do it with any charge? Thanks.

Not necessarily with any charge. Another indication would be ejector swipes on the case head.
You are within Hodgdon's charge weight range for Varget. I have used 44.7 in several rifles and had great success. As a matter of fact, I use it now in my AI AW and it shoots great.

I have been shooting 44.3g of varget in my .308 5r for a couple years. I am going to go back and retest some seating depths as soon as I get my stock back from a dbm installation.

When I got this rifle I checked the throat depth and it is so deep, I can't get anywhere close to the lands so I don't think depth will make much difference for me, but I am going to play with it some once I find my charge. Which dbm did you get? I have the Wyatt's but would like one that could hold a longer bullet.

I sent my stock to Hooper Ordnance to have it inlet and I purchased one of his DBM's. Hopefully I will have it back before next weekend.

Is this a stock remington 5r milspec?

Other than the incoming DBM it is factory. I want to see if loading them a little longer in the AICS mags will do anything to my groups. Might play with some powder charges also.

To touch my lands, I need to be at 2.95". Right now I am loading at 2.80", the longest I can load with the mag. The other thing about loading them that long is the bearing surface between the neck and bullet only being .20". I was taught tat should be at least the same as the bullet diameter.

I like that stock! I put a manners on my .300wm.

I would have to go back and look it up. I started with trying to clone the fgmm and went from there. I don't think it is possible to touch the lands in a factory 700 without turning it into a single shot.

i used to have T2 manners on it on the begining ..it is a realy nice stock the packing on mcm IMO is much better and of corse mcm is molded color compare to my manners PAINT. i had surgeon bottom sitting and is much better than my cdi for me the magwell on the surgeon is a plus specialy on proning position dont need to lift up your rifle to insert a mag comparre to cdi, badter etc. here he was

I've been testing loads with Varget and 175 SMK with my new AAC-SD and around 44.5 grains using Lapua brass seems to be the sweet spot.

I would do the 5-7 in .1gr increments and ideally push it out to 500 yards. Also remember that you are only really looking at the vertical stringing dont worry about windage at this point.

As was already mentioned the cratering is likely due to the slightly oversided firing pin hole I have a ar-10 that craters primers even with the lowest charge weights. Once you start seeing other signs of pressure like the primers flattening or ejector swipe etc I would start to worry but 5-7 should be a good group to try.

2.880". That was as long as I could fit in the magazine. They need to be 2.950" to touch the lands, but what do you do?

Ryan

When i still using BDL i single load and i had two bug hole 5shot.with imr4064 43gr oal 2.93 and varget 44.0gr same oal now that im using aics mags ive been seating them 2.86.my alpha type 2 mags is in the way and ill be going back to 2.93.on tge 2.86 its sub moa to 400yd that the farthest i shot her. Best group i had last sunday at 200yd 3/4" outside to outside 5shot.i thought it was oretty good

I have read about many 5Rs with Varget/Lapua/175SMK/CCIBR2 that will have a node around 43 gr and another around 45 gr with 2.810 coal. My 5R had a really good node at 43 and a better one at 45.1. But neither one is as good as the 178 AMAX with 44.8 gr and 2.838 coal, same components.
