Pistol powder recommendation

Can anyone please recommend a pistol powder than will work well with 9mm, 40 S&W, and. 45 ACP? I am hoping that there is one that will work for all three and stock up.

I use universal clays and bullseye for standard loads and Trailboss for my pooters. All three work well, but there are a lot of other powders that will as well.

I like Power Pistol, but I've also used TiteGroup and Unique. Power Pistol is my preferred choice though for pistol.

Thanks guys. I have a Hornady LnL to set up and it would be nice just to swap out the dies and keep the same powder in the dispenser and adjust the charge weight.

Unique, Power Pistol, and Win 231, in that order Unique may be easier to find, since it is a popular shotgun powder for heavy loads., May want to check out Bullseye or Herco it may be available and work for you until something else comes along.

for those that have used Titegroup and Winchester 231 what, if any, differences do you notice in loading or shooting? I have had Titegroup on order for a........long time......and am interested in finding a substitute if it loads and shoots about the same.

I would tend to stay away from flake powders like Unique and Herco in small capacity cases, if for no other reason that they don't throw as consistent a charge in the small amounts you'd use in 9/40/45. They're much better for 357/41/44/45 Colt with their larger volume charges. Power Pistol is great in larger cases, again, meters well, but more suited to 9/40 and higher pressure, heavier loads in 45acp. 231 might be a good bet, or Titegroup-both maybe better with lighter bullets in 9/40, but very good in 45-and both meter well.

HP38 is a good all around powder and lots of load data. I use it for .45 but Longshot for .40

W231 is my new go to powder for most pistol calibers. It seems to be slightly cleaner than Bullseye in my .45acp and just as accurate.

6.6 gns power pistol with 200XTP on a 45 gives me the same trajectory as a factory 230 out to 200 yds. I use 13.5gns H110 with a 108XTP for .357 mag.

Used straight Clays for years and switched to SOLO 1000.

Clays is a bit spiky by comparison.

Go with HP-38. It is the exact same powder as W-231 and is generally cheaper as well. It can be used in any of the cartridges you listed as well as many, many others.

bullseye. very close to milspec SR7970 flake powder. I've used a lot of unique over the years, but I've also shot unique from a 9mm SA (Beretta) and had it spit unburned powder in front of my shooting bench. Weird, but true.

If I had one powder to choose for those calibers you mentioned, I'd go with Bullseye.

I prefer PowerPistol myself, good velocities but horrendous muzzle flash. If you don't like flamethrowers, you'll want to try something else.

Vihtavuori N-340, will do very well for the three rounds you have listed. Great speed, very clean, and very consistent from lot to lot. Try a pound, you'll be glad you did!

Thanks iShoot17. I looked and H38 and Win 231 are identical as far as charge weight plus H38 is about $9.00 cheaper for an 8 lb. jug. One last question is what powder is less temp sensitive? We go from 100 above to 70 below. I would think that H38?

I use Bullseye with CCI primers. I don't know my friends .45 ACP load (we split the Bullseye stash), but I have the following 9mm load:

- Once fired Blazer brass (not that it matters, but I'm brass specific with my loads, haha).
- 115 grain Montana Gold
- CCI small pistol primer
- 4.15 grains of Bullseye

I get very very nice groups out of my Sig 226.

I noticed this yesterday! Thought I had a bad powder thrower. It would start ok, then start getting gradually larger as I went.

Had to redo about 100 cases.

I've heard good things about unique, but don't think I'll use it again once these two pounds are gone.
