Several months ago, I made and started using sandbags in my workout routine. I have a love/hate relationship with them...love 'em because they smoke me...hate 'em because, well, they smoke me! They're cheap, easy to make, customizable, extremely versatile, and very effective. I made mine by filling an actual white sandbag from Lowe's (the kind you use to stop floodwaters)with 50 lbs of sand. After tying and zip-tying the bag shut, I covered it with duct tape. I then double-bagged it inside another white sandbag. I then tied and zip-tied the second bag.

I know this isn't revolutionary information, but I wanted to pass along an idea that might add variety and new challenges to your workouts.

Having said that, do any of you use sandbags in your workouts? If so, how did you make yours, and how are they holding up to wear and tear? Are there any unusual or especially sadistic exercises you guys employ?

Re: working out with sandbags

Inquiring minds want to know more - got a good reference of workouts? I'm always looking for new and interesting things to do at home when I can't make it to the gym/wall.

Re: working out with sandbags

we have a fancy version of them at work called power bags .We do farmers walks ( 1 in each hand and walk fast out to a set distance and back , 30 meters or so )We do firemans lifts (across the shoulders and sprint or run up down steps) and all the usual squats ,1 legged , calf raises ect. down to imagination really

Re: working out with sandbags

These show up in the crossfit WoD's.

Sandbag shoulders - like a clean.. It goes from the ground to your R shoulder then back down. Then L shoulder...

Presses - overhead

Run - on the shoulder, 1 mile run.

I agree they are a bitch.

Re: working out with sandbags

I pick mine up and to a straight arm overhead position then slam them down as hard as I can immediately pick it up then throw it until I can't pick it up again. Three sets and I'm goodl.

I'd rather have my nipples sandpapered off than do Turkish get ups.

Brooks Kubik writes some really good books about strength training, covers a lot using sandbags and kegs. I have a 15.5 gallon keg I add a little water to every week. Max weight is 170 lbs with water, right now its at 125 its kind of my light day workout compared to when I use traditional weights.

I had some 100 lb sandbags made up before they were just as good heck I recommend kegs and bags. Load them on to a truck bed, throw them, press them, bear hug, them do squats with them try to throw them onto your shoulde with one hand. Real good filler exercise in my opinion when added to strength training or a powerlifting routine. Sledgehammers great to for grip training look into slim the hammer man on that.

A good workout is get into full gear (plate carrier w/plates, full combat load=atleast 6 full mags, 2 frags, full camelbak and obviously weapon) fill up atleast 500 by yourself take that and walk it up 2 stories and then up rickety ladder. Build a bunker/post with those sand bags, only to tear it down and.rebuild it a month later....thats a fun workout :p
