Hey guys, I would like to start of by thanks all of you for all the information and help I have received form this forum. I have gained tons of knowledge and used it to build this bad to the bone rifle. Last summer a buddy bought a savage 7mm rifle, slapped a $100 scope on it and we hit the range. This was my first time shooting a bolt action rifle. After a couple shoots each we took it out to 600 yards (the max yardage at this range) and I hit the target on my second shoot, I was hooked. I sold a couple things and bought a Remington 700 SPS Varmint in a 308. I then started shopping for a gunsmith and found a local guy that build custom rifles out of his house and supplies 70% of the rifle at a local range that holds long range shooting matches, by supplies I mean he build most of them. I talked with him, browsed this forum and asked lots of questions. I found the barrel I wanted, a Bartlien M24 contour 1:11.25 twist rate with 5R rifling, delivered the barrel and rifle to my smith and he trued the action, lapped the lugs, squared the bolt face, and installed the barrel. He asked for a round that I was reloading to cut the chamber to that size and I have measure the chamber and it is exactly that size. I also had him install a Holland muzzle brake.
I ordered a Badger Ordnance bottum metal and tac knob. Now I needed stock to go with this project, I ordered a Manners T4A stock in midnight camo. I needed a new trigger so I turned to Timney 510 and tuned it down to 1.5 lbs. that this is so crisp and smooth its amazing. Then came all the research and everything that comes along with choicing what glass you are going to put on your rifle. I ended up going with a Leupold Mark 4 ER/T 6.5-20X50MM FFP M5 turrets and a TMR reticle. with everything order and parts showing up here and there I slowly dropped things off with my gunsmith. Six months in the making and I finally got my rifle all put together and got to break it in last week. Today I hit the range and finished up some load development and man this thing is a beast!

And here was my best three shot group of the day, honest to God there are three shots there! I have a witness! I was shooting a 178gr. Hornady Match, Lapua brass, cci primer, 47.4 gr. of Pro 2000 mr., seated at 2.235 to the ogive.

I love my rifle! looking forward to getting into some comps and shooting out to 1000 yards. I hit at 100o today but it was really windy down range so it was tough with a 308. Thanks for reading I was so pumped about today I had to share. Happy shooting!

Thanks guys! Love it, next week I am going to put paper out at 300 yards or 400 yards, depending on which range I can go to. The bipod is the Sinclair International Tactical bipod. Its nice because it goes from 6 inches to like 13 inches I believe. I am in love with this thing, I even took the wife out yesterday and had her shoot the rifle. I sight it in for 1,000 yards, she took over the rifle and hit the metal target at 1,000 yards on the first try! Shooting at 600 yards was not hard at all.... just a tac driver! So pumped I just want to call out of work this week and spend all week at the range! haha

Sean

Your groups are unacceptable!
Move out to a distance where you can actually measure them! :)
Congrats!

That rifle is amazing!!! I sat at the bench watching his shots... There are indeed three shots in that one hole. He did the same three shot group on multiple targets... Unreal accuracy!!!

Great write up and nice looking hammer... Jealous.

It was great time yesterday at the range. Greilly5352 failed to mention is that his 300 winmag was just drilling the 1,000 yards targets all day! Good times...

Is it the DOPE on the rifle or dope shooting the rifle?

I don't care how great the rifle is, let's not forget the marksman.

Congrats. very nice build indeed. Who is the riflesmith who built it? He needs a round of applause as well.

Seeing that Group made everything worth it...Beautiful Rifle and Great Shooting too! Definitely a Keeper!

Have you been reloading long? What do you think of the Pro 2000 Powder VS the Varget? Seems like not a lot of people using the Pro2000 these days but I've heard some great things and results with them Yours included!

Who is the smith by the way. You guy should come to our bi-monthly 1K shoot at the Desert Marksman in Palmdale. We have one coming up May 29th.

I'd love to shoot at The Desert Marksman but unfortunately I'm working on the 29th.... Thanks for the invite. If I get a trade for the day I'll surely come out!

BullzeyeNJ you are absolutely correct. I need to make a HUGE shout out to Ron Roark of Ron Roark Gunsmith out of Newbury Park, ca. The guy is a real stand up guy, a retired Ventura County Sheriff deputy and armor/range master. He works out of his garage but very knowledgeable and wants to help. He even called me when he was cutting the chamber so I could come by and watch. I was talking to him about gunsmithing so he invited me over to learn. Quick turn around time on projects, I honestly could not speak high enough of the guy! Here is his info on Cheaper than dirty:

Highly recommended!

I have heard of the Desert Marksman but that about it, is it open to the public or is it a members only thing? I would love to come out and shoot in the comp. I would like to come out and shoot at the range before hand to get a feel for the place. We have been shooting at Wes Thompsons in Piru, love that place. Ron Roark of Newbury Park build my rifle. I gave a little narative on the post above please check that out. They guy is a stud and if you need any work done I would not go anywhere else, and he is pretty reasonable. I would love to check out Desert Marksman, if you could shot me some info I would be very grateful, I will work on getting Greily5352 there as well!
Happy shooting.

You know what I happened upon 2000 MR by chance but I have to say I am pretty impressed with it. I like everyone else was using Varget but I cant find it anywhere so I have been searching for a replacement. I found some one pounders and a eight pounder so I picked it up. I have Chronographed some 175 SMK in this rifle and I was getting 2860 FPS out of this rifle with a 26 inch barrel. I am getting 2790 FPS with 178 gr Hornady Match with 47.4 gr. of 2000 mr without any signs of pressure. I am very happy with it. I have only been loading for about six months but I have friends that have been loading longer and its working out great. I hope this helps man.

Very true you need good marksmanship, but great marksmanship with a POS rifle is not going to get you a shoot group like that... A great rifle and monkey behind the trigger will not get you a great group like that! I was not using a lead sled, just a bipod and a badger bone shooting bag under the rear, no dope here sunshine! Don't hate appreciate. I am always looking to improve skills. Happy shooting.
