i just bought a 308 and havent recieved yet but was wondering if the 26in barrel is long enough to handle the muzzle jump or should it be cut down and put a break on.

Depends on how much recoil is too much for you. I have a Remington 700 with 26" barrel and have never felt the need for a brake.
Cutting it down wont help with recoil. Adding a brake will.

IMHO, If you cant manage the recoil off of a .308 of ANY length, you need to go back to the fundamentals and learn how. A brake on a 308 does more to piss off other people on the range by slinging gasses, overpressure and godawful noise all the way down the line than anything else.

shortening any barrel, rifle or hangun, will increase the recoil_
adding a brake will reduce the recoil_
Nobody I knows, myself included, that "suffered" from the recoil of a .308 26" VS or Police 700

I think the best way to decide is to shoot it, many people will tell you that if you have to install a brake on a .308 you are a wimp.
To me, no matter the caliber, less recoil = better

I agree that less recoil tends to make all of us shoot better. Having said that, I feel like my 700VSSF 308 is very manageable without a brake. I have the brake on my TRG only because the barrel was threaded already. I don't think I would make the investment on a 700.

With my 5R and a 24" barrel recoil is mild. After a long range session, no problems with the recoil, although the shoulder can get a little tender the next day. Less than a 12 gauge shooting trap or skeet. Like said above, shoot it and you will be able to decide for yourself.

Recoil aside, I've never shot anything that wasn't easier to shoot with a brake. It's like cheating. You can always take it off.
