Would a FlatBack Savage be worth it to do a build??

....I guess the title asks it all?? I have the chance to pick one up in '06 to use as a platform, and Id like to re-barrel it to .280AI. But if parts (ie. Stock, mag conversion, etc.) are going to be a bitch to find, I think Id rather pass. I did all the search terms I could think of, but I cant really find much here on the hide.

Thoughts/Opinions??

Thanks,.

Performance-wise, its good to go. Don't pay much for it, they have little value. Don't expect to get much for it if/when you decide to sell.

I like Savage, by the way.... but their resale sucks.

Lots of stocks out there. Stockade, HS Precision, Manners, XLR Chassis, NO AICS THOUGH, I'm sure there are more. CDI makes bottom metal/DBM conversions for them. Barrels are simple to replace and there are some good guys making prefits. Triggers are semi-limited but you can get it pretty smooth and light yourself. If you can get it for a good price go for it.

Yeah, Ive already got an eye on a Bartlein 1:8.5 twist blank, would $375 sound reasonable for the barrel??
Also, Ive had a Timney in these sticks, Its not a bad start.
The 110 is $200 and it looks like its been in the hills a bit, but looks like it hasn't even shot a full box of shells. :D

I too am a Savage Man, Selling my old one was a mistake. However, I only have experience with these hunting weight rigs, Long Range is a whole new mess.

Bower, Budget isnt very big. Just trying to keep ahead of bills, but I do have the luxury of time. I can amass parts and have a great 'smith that can put it together whenever and as I can.

The older flat back stagger fed actions are slightly different in the way they feed and it has been my experience that you need to modify the undersize of the action to feed through the newer mags. If you have a good dremel you are good to go. The screw spacing is the same with regards to stocks.

Depends on who you ask what answer you will get. If it were my dollar I would call Jim Briggs from northland shooter supply and get a criterion but that's because I'm cheap and they have a great track record. Should run you closer to 300-325. There were some rock creek cut rifled barrels in the classifies for around 400 recently as well if cut rifling is your bag. On eBay....ya I know, there is a guy chambering and threading green mountain barrels for 180+ shipping as well. No idea on the smiths accuracy but gm Barrels have a good track record as well. Not sure who of those would have 280ai either though.

But that being said I don't think 375 for a bartlein is out of line either.

I have a flat rear Savage 110 that I built into a .284 that is awesome. No feeing issues out of AICS 300WM mags either. Jim Briggs is the man for barrels. This one is a Shilen.

Any kind of budget?

Stockade stocks go for around 235 for money saver option. It's basically out of mold. You fill the pin holes, sand and paint yourself. The build is that of a McMillan. Very similar process. Not quite as good but damn close for the money. 5 month wait though. I have an elk stalker on the way. www.stockadestocks.com

They have a nice tactical A5 style stock for a little more. From my research you can't really beat it in that price range. Call up Kevin, he is a great guy all around.

Cool. Lotta great info here to look into. Ill call Jim n make acquaintance. Thanks for all the help.

Also, if anyone sees something pop up in the F.S. that'd be needed to build this, ...I probably have no idea that it would fit the ole 110, so feel free to smack me upside the head n let me know its there. And ill start researchin.
