I really want to learn to become a long range marksman. Bought my son a Savage 17hmr with a decent scope to get him interested to instead of just wanting to do shootem up like all the dumb video games.

Anyway, I would like to figure out a nice 308 rig for myself. I have done some reloading, but only pistol ammo. So will end up getting into for the rifle also.

Any suggestions for a quality gun to get started with in 308? Would like to get a decent beginner rig to get use to before I go in whole hog. Would like to spend $1000 or less for the whole rig. So I know it will not be a tack driver a mile away, but want a good foundation.

Have talked with a lot of Savage bigots and was leaning towards getting one, but most of the rifles that i have read about in here are the Remington 700. So just confused and want to get a good base to work from.

Any suggestions and websites would be great.

Thanks!!

Savage bigot??? Hey I resemble that remark! LOL

A 700 Tactical or AAC-SD with Weaver 20MOA base, Burris XTR low rings and a SWFA SS 12x42 would be a really good place to start and you could probably put that entire package together for close to a grand.

You would also be served well going with a Savage 10FP-SR, 10P, 11VT or similar. True, the Savage aftermarket is smaller than the 700 and the cool kids will make fun of the barrel nut and clunky bolt lift, but I'm sure you know they are easy to DIY.

Frankly, a 7005R or the 10FCP-McMillan would be near the best "from the box" 308s available in the $1000 ballpark.

OK, I caught most of the terminology there! I have somemore learing today!

Is there any sites or posts that show the differenences between the Remington 700's? Just curious what would be best to start with as a base rifle.

Thanks

Remington 700 _______ whatever you like. I went with a 700 SPS Varmnit. My skill level surpassed the rifles capabilities and I now have turned that gun into a full custom you see in my signature.

I went with the SPS bc I wanted the heavy barrel but knew the stock was crap and would be the first thing I got rid of, tigger was next, some people like the new trigger others don't, I didn't. With a B&C stock it was a 3/4-1" gun at 100 yards consistently.

Either is fine, I own both and like both. I started with Rems and now Prefer savages for the floating bolt head and ease of barrel changing.

Savage 10 Precision Carbines suck and can't shoot well!

3-different loads and I still couldn't hit the darn bullseye! I paid $799.00 for the rifle and was doing the same as you. Love the rifle and have the bug so looking at the next level, but the Savage will shoot!

I have seen quite a few people with the 24 and 26 inch barrels. For me starting is their a big differance? And was also hearing 11.25 or 12 twist. It that something to look for also?

Longer barrels and 11.25 twist are more important for long range where 175 grn and heavier bullets are favored. That said, 20" barrels have shot to 1000 yds.

My model 70 '06 shoots like this, LOL!

If you want a heavier barrel rifle Id get the SPS varmint, hunting rifle weight get the SPS, very good shooting rigs, Ive got 2 Rem 308s, they are screamers. OK, maybe not screamers, but they shoot good.

Start with any Remmy 700. Parts are more plentiful and cheaper. Savage is OK too but parts less available.

The model of R700 really doesn't matter. Buy the cheapest used model you can find then learn to shoot the piss out of it. Upgrade when you ID parts that fit you and you have the funds.

I had a savage and couldn't get over all the damn parts on the bolt. I went back to Remington. Allot more parts and smiths are more familiar with the actions.

Check out 8541Tactical Long range precision build project I think his came in just over 1k but it gives you a good idea of whats going on, what to "deal with" vs what will effect the shot. Once you get decent with that build then you can start changing out the things you don't like but its a good starting point.

Someone above references a fixed SWFA SS 12X42 this might work but if your going to get a fixed scope make sure you figure out everything you want to used the stick for. Reason I bring it up is if you ever try to hunt with it a 12x is going to be way too much power. Even shorter range TA stuff is going to be difficult without reference points.
