After the bashing/banter of the Jack Reacher thread, I posted this. I don't care about his religion, his marriages, or any of that crap. TC has been in a ton of great movies, if they weren't great, they were solid. In fact, I dare say he has been in the fewest bad movies of any star in hollywood.

While I am very unusual, I really liked Vanilla Sky, A Few Good Men, and The Last Samuri. As a Naval Aviator, I have to like Top Gun too. While not his movie, I liked his role in Tropic Thunder and Austin Powers.
 
I am no big fan of Tom Cruise, but my vote is Tropic Thunder. I had to go change my underwear after seeing that.

Top Gun even though it's gayer than a SF Pride Parade.

Also Tom Cruise (scientology wackiness aside) is really cool in real life. A friend of mine works in the movie business and he does these screener/promotional things down in So Cal, all the movie people get together and they rent out these theaters to show new movies, indie flicks etc. Tom Cruise and a bunch of other stars were there to promote stuff, Tom Cruise Stallone one of the Baldwins and a couple others I think Blake Lively was there to promote Savages. Anyways Tom Cruise was the only one really signing autographs and just generally being a cool guy he got cornered by a bunch of fans at this beer garden area and he was just playing it off buying drinks for people and signing autographs posing for pics etc. The other stars were all jerks especially Stallone he looks like a circus freak in real life too.

I wanted to get my pic taken with him but I was way too shy lol
 
M.I. - III is a great movie.

I'd say Days of Thunder is as good as Top Gun

Minority report is also good, Few Good Men is a classic.

A guy I went to college with (10+ years ago) used to work at the Van Nuys, CA airport. Told me a story that a Beech Baron pulled up one day and Tom Cruise jumped out of the pilot seat; he flew the plane in himself. A few minutes later, a Gulfstream arrived and Nicole Kidman was onboard. Tom helped roll out the red carpet for the Gulfstream, but Kidman demanded to step off the Gulfstream airstair and into the limo.

Tom apologized for his (then) wife's behavior and handed out big tips to all the line guys that were working the two planes.
 
I remain absolutely shocked that no one has mentioned the classic "South Park" episode, "Trapped in the Closet"!
 
I had this same discussion with a friend last week. Take out his wackiness and he really is a very talented actor. Check out his list of roles on IMDB, all are big movies. He doesn't take a role just to take a role. You can also see where he and Nicole Kidman began to split and how that affected his role choices; Eyes Wide Shut, Vanilla Sky, Magnolia but he followed up with some strong roles like MI 2, Minority Report and Last Samurai. I will have to say that Collateral is probably my favorite of his.
 
Top gun, although in the day Risky Business was pretty good! I give credit where it's due, he makes some entertaining movies! That's my opinion.

He's not that wacky for Hollywood honestly. He's one of the few good ones.

The only other one I can think of who is kind of a big name and not a POS according to most people is Sean Scott, the guy from those horrible American Pie movies. Some scene from one of his crappy movies was being filmed in a town that I was working in and he was out randomly signing autographs. Just jeans and a T-shirt, sitting on a park bench, hi how you doing etc. Contrast that with Stallone and Rourke going everywhere with a platoon of juicemonkey bodyguards who punch everybody and beauticians that follow them with 6ft tall mirrors lol.
 
Very different dude imo. But a solid 30 year career in that biz...in that POS town says a lot.

According to a number of directors; Tom is a consummate professional on set and is often the only actor that has really prepared for the role. I'm with Desert_308 on this one, the man has survived the test of time in a industry known for chewing up folks and shitting them out.

I met him very briefly at Tokyo-Naritta airport when Minority Report was premiered there. Seemed like a hell of a nice guy. Wish I could say the same about some other celebs I have met and previously idolized or admired.

For me in no particular order:

Last Samurai (it's a good story)
Valkyrie (looks a lot like the real man so very well cast for the part)
Collateral (sure nailed the handgun work)
Risky Business (because who the Hell wouldn't want to be that guy?)
Top Gun (campy and dated but good entertainment)
A Few Good Men (it's a good story)
Tropic Thunder (Les Grossman is the shizzit!)
 
The documentary they'll make of him when he passes on. Okay, I liked the '80's stuff.

I'm not a big fan of him. I noticed not many folks mentioned Kubrick's last film, Eyes Wide Shut. That was the highlight of his career, being in a film like that.
 
OMG! I found this thread and thought I'd be the only guy to throw out Tropic Thunder. So glad to see other people who like seeing TC in a fat suit!
 
Top Gun, It had a huge following regardless of how bad it looks compared to todays special effects. I hear people self included still quoting that
movie daily. Negative Ghost Rider the Pattern is full.

Days of Thunder is also great. Loved the City Chevy that Kurt Bush ran in the recent Nationwide race.
 
Saw that race, the car was a hoot! I normally skip the Nationwide stuff, but that car pulled me right in.

My regular 'watch' is the Sprint Cup stuff; but being a Jeffie fan, I'm beginning to think that all that 'bad luck' isn't just luck.

Nobody gets wrecked that often, not their doing, by something that's just coming out of the blue. Deliberate, probably not directly, but the way that sports been reorganized, and reorganized, and reorganized; wrecks are beginning to look like a desired outcome. It's something, but 'stock cars' it ain't; hasn't been for a long time, now. The object of racing is to drive to win, not drive to avoid getting blindsided again, and again, and again...

It's getting so a team can't even float a fart without running it through a template, or a scale, or a tape measure, or sumpin'.

For something that submits to all that scrutiny, wrecks just don't seem all that accidental anymore; they look intentional on the part of the ruling authority. I'm surprised some bunch of wreck-injured spectators hasn't had NASCAR's Board of directors neutered, drawn, and quartered by now.

I was going to post this in the Good Movies section because, personally, I like most of Tom Cruise's films.
But I know that there are some of you out there who completely despise him and any movie he's ever made, so I posted it here in the Bad Movies section.



I deliberately avoided adding any films where he wasn't in a lead role.
(The Outsiders...Taps, etc...)

I'd have to say my favorite Tom Cruise film is a toss-up between Minority Report, Jerry Maguire and Eyes Wide Shut.
Overall, I'd have to go with Jerry Maguire.
Yes, I know that some of you will gag upon reading that, but I think he was great in that film.
How can you go wrong with, "I'm your motherf***er! SHOW ME THE MONEY!!!" :D
Minority Report runs a close second.

Interesting hearing positive things about Tom. I used to be in the business (part-time) and have met him/photographed him and Nicole a few times at red carpet events. When the camera is on him or he is in public he portrays as a nice guy. Behind the scenes a different story. After an awards ceremony was done, Nicole and I were chatting (was the official photog that night) and Tom sees her and I and storms over. NO ONE would ever get jealous of me but he got enraged and we went toe to toe. (I'm 6'2 so obviously he was looking up lol) Nicole tried to shut him down and I politely asked him for a photograph of the two of them. Hi literally said no and grabbed Nicole away almost ripping her dress off (was so stunned by his reaction I didn't think to snap shots to sell) . She turned around as she is being dragged and says "sorry".
Year later and I'm at the same event, she recognized me and just kinda smiled and nodded like I remember you.
Fan of some of his work but not on a personal level.
